FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, The Stock Market Inactive, but Firm—Sales To-Day. GOLD STEADY AT 112 3-8. The Public Debt Statement—Decline of $3,880,000—Money on Call Closed at Three Per Cent—The Bank Statement—Gov- ernmentand Railway Bonds Steady. a eeelintnes Wat Srnext, } Sarunpay, July 1—6 P. M. Bulls and bears bave apparently aa little zest for “villanous saltpetre’’ as had Falstaff in the play, and are rapidly retreating to scenes where the pistol flend Pevaileth wot and cannons roar as geutly as sacking doves. There was, novertheless, covs:derably more than a corporal’s guard of the uaterrified present in ‘he board room to-day, who did yeoman’s service In advancing tho market to un accompanying fustiade of stupendous fire crackers. iswould have been 4a unfortunate commentary on the spread eagletsm which we all mean to celebrate bad the stock list been allowed to sink away into & lower scale of prices There was no danger of this, however, lor the efforts of that band of patriots which coustitute the Usvorn-Mills- Morgan combination took care of things carly in the day and did their work well, As on yesterduy; the old-time favorites of Luke Shore, Wostern Union, Pacific Muil and Michigan Cep- tral led the van in the march to higher prices. Picking up quotations at about where they left off last wight, there was a sharp advance along the whole line—Western Union rising to 713,, Lake Shore to 58%, Michigan Central to 52% and Pacific Mail to 26%. Even New Jersey Central was acknowledged to be pot so black us it hus been painted and had friends enough to keep italong with the other favorites in a rise of from 72% to 73%. The better feoling shown in this stock was reflected in the enhanced value laid upon the Consolidated Lehigh and Wilkesbarre bouds, which ut one time sold at 87%, or y recovery of 63¢ points within a few days. Whatis more important, the day’s business did not consist solely in warking up figures only to‘let them drop again, but in holding them with scarce a set-back, firmly to the end. The event of the day, however, was the presence in the ‘street of that favored class who, toil, not neither do they spin, but know a trick worth two of it in placing their capital in the sound dividend payers of the pertod—in a word, the “investors.”? They had come down to draw their semi-annual profits, and the bond coulis marked the fact, like a barometer, All the better classes of railway and miscellaneous mortgages Were largely sought for at advancing figures, aud the quost is likely to continue antil the vast sums paid out in the shape of dividends shall have found a satisfactory resting place. Sales to-day aggregated $1,360 shares, of which 35,000 were Leke Shore, 11,000 Western Unidn and 10,000 Pneific Mail.
