FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks Dull and Business Confined to but Few Active Securities, GOLD 1121-2 Money on Call Abundant at 2 and 2 1-2 Per Cent—The Bank Statement—Government Bonds Strong—Railroad Bonds Fism— Decline in the Coal Carrying Railway Stocks, Watt Sreeer, } Satcrpay, June 17—6 P. M. Stock brokers bave roared as gently as sucking doves during the day’s business, the general steadiness of the market calling for no particular exertion of lung power. What little change there was in quotations was smil- : ingly received by favored bears, while their foes, tho bulls, had their Jaugh on the wrong side of the mouth. ‘There was a general but upimportant decline in al- most all tho active favorites, due partially to the ab- sence of the controlling power and partially to the bad example.set by New Jersey Centra!, which showed the white feather early in the day by dropping from 79 to $634 with sales at 75 seller 60, ‘The passage of the next dividend has not only appa- rently surprised hitherto confident holders of shares, but it had the effect to-day o1 dragging down with it its anthracite confréres, as Delaware and Hudson from 108 0 106 bid, Delaware, Lackawanna and Western from 10734 to 108, and even brought out ten shares of Peun- sylvania Coal at 260, which looks as though even this topper-fastened vessel might spring aleuk under tho pressure of the rombipation. Asusual, Lake Shore was ‘princeps mazimus,” but with a smaller following than for some days past, There was a falling off, too, in price as woll as in the number of shares marketed, tor the opening figures of 65% grow smaller in yalue until they touched 545, from which there was a rally to55 at the close. Our esteomed friend Mr. Merriman gave us a taste of his quality in supplying the market with a goodly lot of the stock, and his efforts were appreciated by the buy- tra, who reaatly absorbed it. As for Pacific Mail, it was like ‘The last rose of summer Left blooming slone, to entirely was it neglected, or, possibly, hke tho woollen garment which the careful housewife put away im camphor for the summer season. A happy disposi- on, if the moths, which have so long fed upon ita sub- stance, can be kept away. } The Western stocks exhibited a strength of their Own quite independent of the ruling fancies, which showod itselt in an advance in Northwest preferred of from 63 to 645;, and St, Paul common from 40% to 415%, and in the preferred from 7014 to 12, prices which were firmly held at the close of business. ‘The juveniles had auite a game of pitch and toss with their Httle favorite, Wabash and Western, Any capitalist of a $200 power could have possessed the right and a quasi title to an out possession of 100 shares at the outset, but later in the day the price was bounced up to 2}4—a rise which must bave cleaned out many of the speculators on tho street side, Western Union was inclined to adopt the course of Lake Shore a» a model of behavior, and accordingly fell off from 69 to 68, and so remained for the rest of the day. The, stock has been in good demand for de- livery for several days past, lending at ‘flat’? and av pnoper cent fur carrying. Union Facific was freo from molestation as though it were a “‘pisen sarpent,”’ and there occurred no necessity for placing a “nolé me fangere” signboard over it, for nobody had an inclina- tion to do so. At the end ot businegs prices recovered a little, par- ticularly in the Western stocks, partly on the favorable “bank etatement. Why a further addition to a mar_ ket already glutted should havo any effect of this kind it ts difficalt to appreciate, ‘There are, however, considerable amounts drifting into the better cliss of railroad mortgages, which pro- tess, while it relieves the coffers of caplialists, offers the more important evidence of a returning confidence.
