[From the Toledo Commercial.) Lima, June 18, 1876. On Thursday last one of the most terrible tragedies that have made conspicuous the criminal annals of Northern Ohio for the last few years took place Orange township, Hancock county, about three miles from Bluffton, and a short distance from Ada, Hurdin county, The entire community, in this region, both in Hardm and Hancock counties, have been wrought up toapitch of excitement never before known in their history. This tragedy was the poisoning of thirteen persons, members of the families of two brothers and a nephew, by Isaac B, Charles, a resident of Ada, and lato City Treasurer of Ada, a man who has up to a short period borne an excellent reputation, and who has been re- garded as a consistent member of the Methodist Church and a an honorabie man and valued citizen. But developments which have been made since the tragedy of last Thursday make him out to be a fiend incarnate, a devil with a heart so biack and whose deeds are so damuable as to make other devils ot their deeds as driven snow in his presence. In order to observe a proper sequence of events it will be necessary to go back several years in the narra- tive. Isaac Charles, Sr., was one of the old settlers of Allen county, and in the course of a lifetime of fru- gality, hard labor and onergy amassed property valued in the aggregate at $40,000, He had four sons, Isaac B., Elijah, Joun, and another older than all three, who died a good many years ago, leaving a boy, Thomas Charles, who was rearod by bis grandparents. The boys, as they grew to manhood, married, and loaving the paternal roof, and settling—Eljah and Jonn is Hancock county and Isaac. in Hardin counsy, all within a short distance of the home stead—in the same manner as had thei father, acquired each a moderate amount of property. The old folks were consistent members of the Methodist Church, and the children likewiso became members of that religious organization. Isaac, so far ss 1s known to the outer world, was an upright man until some two or three yoars ago. He was not‘so steady in his habits of business as his brothers, and was possessed of a de- sire for specuiftion, which ho indulged to some extent, and to bis detriment financially. At the time men. tioned he became inextricably involved in debt, ‘and in his desperation gave his notes for various amounts, aggregating, it is sald, $4,500, and forged his father’s name as an indorsement. This beeame known in the course of time to the holder of a note for $1,500 and he, it is supposed, informed tho father of his son’s rascal- ity. At any rate, the two had a meeting, and a stormy scene ensued; and the forged note was replaced with one bearing a genuine signature, Shortly alter, about the time that the other forged Notes were supposed to be approaching maturity, one night a shot was fired into the window of the old mai by some one evidently intent on killing him, and he escaped death by the narrowest chance. The eccurrence wag a nine days’ wonder, as the old man hadn't an enemy ia the worla, it was supposed, It now asserted that on that’ day Isaac procured « revolver at a hardware store in Ada, saying that he was going on a journey and would need such an tm strument. That night he was absent from home, the next day he returned the weapon, declaring he bad changed his mind. About this time Isaac again visited his father to tall over the affuir of the note, and they repaired to a together. Shortly ufter ho returned and reported his father had been killed by a horse. ‘rho old gentleman was found lying in the barn sense less, with an agly wound in the back of his head. He lived a few days, but never recovered sufficient consciousness to tell how he was hurt, Strange to sey, the oldslady was taken suddenly and violently ill, with gricf, it was said, and she rapidly declined ana died, and Was buried with her busband, Theso events ex: cited no comments at the time, Isaac’s story of the coat of bis aged parents being accredited as true by his brothers and the commumity at large, But a more startting episode was yet in store for terribly fated family. Isaac bad in his househol "¥) a young girl, some sixteen or seventeen years old, and of # sudden she was sent away to Columbus, For what Teason does not appear; but it is now said in order that an abortion mignt be performed, During ber absence Isauc’s wile and a child were suddenly taken 1ll, and after a very brief sickness they went down into the grave to join the aged coup! ibe 80 shortly before had departed this life so s1 Hd ly. Within six months of bis wife’s death Isaac married his servant girl Still the community was not aroused. In the meantime Isaac had sought and obtained irom the Probate Court of Allen county the appointment of bimself as the administrator of his father’s estate, roceeded to settle up his affairs. The old gentieman faa ‘but fow persemat debts, and the ouly paper he ha¢ neering, out wasa note given for money with whict the Methodists in his neighborhood had built a church, and which was secured by a mortgage on the property, In the course of a year it became apparent f shyenbe was ‘‘administering’’ the ovr ad to his own iasantaee None of the taxes were paid, and it was ascertamed that he had been pledging the assets of the estate for his personal debts. Six months ago, on petition of his brother, Isaac was removed from the office and Mr, Tsuac Thompson, of Ada, pied administrator. found that bay predecessor jad not only squandered his own portion of the estate; that the taxes were un- paid; but that all the assets bad disappeared. “All of {ho Uesperate crookednoss of Isauc’s affairs then be- came known to his relatiygs and a bitter quarrel was the result, On last Wednesday the brothers and nome Mr, Thomas Charles, agreed to meet at re fot the purpose of euing all their diftic and tode termine Thomas’ share in the hero we te Ada alter I: on Wednesday, stopped at ‘amit for agrist of motlen s witieh be hi way home His wife, in anticipation of the large company on thetok tol. towing day, set about mixing a batch of bread to be baked on the morrow, and while so doing Isaac went in and out ot the room whero she was working frequently. _ Suddenly he declared that he had a business ment which would take him back to Ada, and he could not possibly return matil the afternoon of Thi and be wished Elijah and Thomas go down there alter bim. Accordingly immediately after dinner on Thursday the two started for Ada, but had gone only a short distance when Thomas was soixed ior Mogan wamttng, ‘at in a few minutes afiorwar 18 uncle, cy supposed that they were suffering from a violent attack of colic. So severe was their pain that they drove tothe roadside und then rolled around almoss in the agenics of dissolution. While in the midst of their attack a neighbor came driving aloug m hot haste and Intormed m that the eutire company had been seized in the same manner. A physician trom Ada was then summoned, Dr. Stun. geon, and he on Saturday caused a portion of the bread to be analyzed at the Normal School at Ada, which brought to hght arsenic enough to havo killed torty persons, And an oven on! ly t09 surely fastened suspicion on Isaac Sunday at mid. night be was arrested on a warrant sworn out by Dr, Sturgeon, and taken to Reed’s Corners, between Ada food ‘luffton, where he is uow under guard await- ing tri So nad as the horrible nate became known a tro- mendous excitement arose, both at Bluffton and and the facts of ges of the old man and woman, Isaac Charles’ wite child and of his unseemly mar- Ting@, came to light, and the construction was placed upon them as stated. Farmers left their work and be- gun to gather into Ada, The examination of Charles ‘was set for Monday afternoon, before a justice of the peace, at Reed's ers. Einjah Charles’ neighbors gatherod en masse, and there were stron; ben- sions that the wretch would be tried in Judge court, but u large body of men went out prevent any such lawlessness, determined that Char! although undoubtediy gutity, should have a tair trial, Just as the examination was to come off, word was re. cived that Mra E, Charles and a child had died, and it postponed, to allow the stricken hus. who had recovered somewhat from the effects of bis portion of the poison, to go tu his dead. Yesterday two more of the victims died in the and it is toured that others will die, ‘All fears of lynching have now subsi A WIFE'S HARD FATE.
