FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Acain Weak- ening—Prices Lower. GOLD 112 5-8. Government Bonds Firm—Railroad and In- yestment ‘Shares Steady—Money on 4 Call 2 and 2 1-2 Per Cent, ‘Wau Street, wu} Toxspay, June 6—6 P. M. Prices were as strong at the opening to-day as was Samson when he gave the famous pull at the pillars, ana became as weak afterward as did the hero with his haircut. There was no especial Delilah with trenchant gnears tocut away the buoyant feeling, but tho separa- tion was made, rather on a desire to reap the profits of the rise of a day or two back than from fear of a posi- tive decline. Thus the early prices of Lake Shore, Western Union, Pacific Mail and St. Paul preferred were the best of the day, as the late ones were tne worst, Sinco then there occurred a general decline long the whole line on a desire to realize profits. The amateur stock speculators who were induced to ship in the Pacitic Mail enterprise at advanced prices and under the promise of future fair weather aro be- ginning to think that the voyage may turn out a dis- agreeable one after all It is easy enough to put anew man at the wheel, as the past election has.done, but it is quite possible that the steersman will find the posi- tion no more desirable than that of Ixion in Hades. Whatever may be the reason, the price of the stock slumped off one per cent to-day, and holders with attenuated bank accounts wero willing to pay 3 to 4per cont to have the shares carried, In Western Union the best card in the present deal seems to have been played in tne shape of a recom- monded dividend and in a promised showing of an in- treased business. Some sort of an exbibis is expected from and will probably be made by the Executive Committee, but whether the Gradgrinds of the street will obtain all the “facts” they would hike to have 1s a3 doubtful as the existence of the philosopher's stone. Meanwhile opinions az to its value are as antagonistic as the positive and negative poles of an electric bat- tery, with only the single certainty that there ia a #hock in abeyance for one sido or the other. The perversity of Lake Shore, which continues to hold its own despite the cogent reasons which are ‘urged for its decline, has somewhat disconcerted the ‘anguino bears who have embarked on tho short side. Commodore Vanderbitt has proved a disappointment in his tenure of life, and the ghouls who have hoped to feast on the occasion of his demise remain banquetless. They still talk of the ‘fortics,”’ and have an eye upon a block of stock which they hope to shake out from pres: ent holders’ bands, but they are met by the assertion that the road will show an increase of a million or so in its earnings, in spite of freight and passenger reduc” tions in tolls, while they quite lose sight of the nascent improvement in commercial circies which is slowly straggling into light. The drop of a point in St, Paul preferrea was proba- bly due to the reaction of the general speculative list, combined with a desire to realize profits on the late rige, rather than to any chango in the condition of the toad itself, There was plenty of money offering to-day at 234 a 8 per cent, which has an ililook for any increase of business and rather points to a dull and steady market for the summer days to come.
