* NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, JUNK 6, 1876.— FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. The Stock Market Generally Firm— Activity and Strength, GOLD 1125-8 A 112 3-4. Money on Call Loans 2 1-2 Per Cent—Invest- ment Shares Firm. Government and Railway Securities Strong— Foreign Exchange Steady. ‘Watt Street, } Monpay, June 5—6 P. M. ‘There has been no mark of a master hand in to-day’s transactions, ana the market has been left to itself— not to its detriment, either, in point of strength, for there was exhibited a tendency to higher prives, based on the better feeling which prevails. Under this influ- ence there was an advance in Western Union of 13¢ per cent, in Lake Shore of 19¢ and in St. Paut preferred of 1 percent. Such activity as there was centred in these stocks, although the shares of the Ohio and Mississippi road were brought into a semi sort of prominence by an ex- teptional desire to purchase, The Montreal admirers of this security having been thawed to the surface under the bland summer days, seem orice more inclined to try their luck, as purchases by their brokers to-aay will testify. The advance, though practically unim- portant, is held out as an inducement to purchase the ttock, and quotations at much higher prices are promised to those who have faith. The almost certain 13g per cent dividend in Western Union, and the problematical one obscurely promised In St, Paul preferred, woro still traded on to-day with the result of a fair advance in both properties, How near the cup is to the lip, or what slip dealers may ex- perience to their discomfort, is a matter for the future to decide. At 1s supposed”that the important operators havo closed up their sccounts for the season, finding the attractions ot the summer holidays more alluring than the dull drag of Wall street, As the street de- pends upon them (in the absence of any general busi- ness) for such trade as is productive of commissions, there 1s likely to result a beggarly account of empty cash boxes belore a revival takes place. * Money is still cheap, loaning at 244 a 3 per cent, and the disposition to loan stocks at about the same rates shows a manifest shrinkage of the short interest and a more confident belief in the future, Such improve. ment, however, is likely to be slow and painful, and those who look for a sudden burst of prosperity are likely to be disappointed.
