FINANCIAL AND COWMERCIAL Stocks Higher and the Market Only Moderately Active: GOLD 1121-2 A 112 5-8. _ Money in Supply at 3 a 8 1-2 Per Cent— Investment Securities Generally Firm— Government and Railway Bonds Steady. Watt Stagst, } Wrpmesvar, May 3i—6 P. M The market opened this moruing at even better prices than prevailea at the close on Monday, and worked tiself up during the first hour or twoto the best figures of the day. ‘hero was the usual lull at noon and a subsequent rally which re-established quotations, and so closed tho fay’s business, “To the triad of active stocks, which for to long a time bas been formed of Lake Shore, West- yen Union and Paciflc Mail, there was addod to-day, the preferred stock of the St Paul compary, which ran up over two points trom opening prices on the favorable reports of increased grain freights. This was about the only legitimate invitation: to speculate of the day, the rest of the market being a broker's one, pure und simple. In spite of the reigning dulness, prices romained obstinately firm, and ventures for the bull account seem to be imcreasing, if the greator desire to Jend stocks and the better price for money (which atone time loaned at 5 per cent on call), are to be taxen as acriterion, Jt is apparent, nevertheless, that it is going to be no easy matter to advance the Tailroad list, in view of ihe war, which is, growing more and more bitter, and which to-day }, secured a new impulse from a further reduc. Sion on the part of Erte of passenger rates to-Chicago. Fifteen dollars is al) it now costs for any young man to go West on broad gauge principles, and the sooner the srowd of youngsters which hangs about the Steck Ex- thange portals avail themselves of the opportunity the ‘batter for themselves—and the railway company, Any remaining doubts about the election of the “Whitehouse” ticket of Pacific Mail directors was dis. pelled by their being chosen without opposition at the mockholders’ meeting to-day. The old-fashioned adage of new brooms sweeping clean was accordingly acted tpon as @ rule and guide in the speculation and a brisk demand for shares created thereby, which bad the effect of carrying the price up from 274¢ to 23 und holding ft at very nearly the lattor figure at the yd, Of course all kinds of promises are made ‘ooking to retrenchment and economy, which, if aigidly carried out, will go far to put the sompany on its legs again. One thing is certain, ‘hat if half the stories now told aro true, the past management of the concern in point of reckless ex- penditure and barefaced plunder is the most scandalous Tecord that Wall strect has ever been treated to. The omission of any mention or ac- counting for the proceeds that were realized during the yoar trom the sales of the San Diego and Shanghai lines, or from tho sale of the San Francisco property, ‘was uot regarded as a feature that should inspire con- fidence in the report. It was remarked that while among the assets of the company appears item, “Townsend street. wharf, 5an Francisco, $466,184,” there is among the expenses, item, “Townsend street wharl, rent $45,000.” It was also noticed that the assets include, “Coal sheds, Nagasaki, $27,619,” which were generally supposed to have been included in the sale of the Shanghai tine. Altogether, the report was considered as remarkably incomplete aod unsatisfactory in the in- formation it imparts. At the nual election for directors, held to-day, the following geatiomen were elecied to serve one year:—Charies G. Francklyn, Henry Hart, Samuel C Thompson, Charles H. Mocot, Androw Boardman, Edward A. Quintard, Thomas J, Owen, Jr., Charles G, Miller and William P. Clyde, It is hoped that the new Board will immediately supplement the recent report with one that will per- mit a perfect understanding of the actual condition of the company and its finances, RECKIPTS AND DISKURSEMENTS AT THE OVFICE OF TITE A8- SISTANT TREASURER OP THN UNITED STATES AT NEW YORK, FOR THE MONTH ENDING MAY 31, 1876.
