_NEW YORK HERALD, “FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Continued Depression in the Stock Market— | Prices Generally Lower. GOLD 1121-2 A 1123-8. Money on Call 2 and 2 1-2 Per Cent—Goy- ernment Bonds Active and Firm—Railway Bonds Stexdy—Poreign Exchange Quiet. LER Sse Pas Wat Stnune, } Moxpay, May 22--6 P.M, ‘The old ducal motto of ‘‘bear and forbear’’ would, in the punning sense which attaches to canting arms, and | in anaturai histery application, be singularly appro- priate as descriptive of to-day’s merket. The course ot busi 3 was thoroughly bearish and for bears, their administrators and assignees, There wasa seliing off of the whole list at the start, the coal stocks leading the way as if they rather liked the movement from their experience of last week, Of course, New Jorsey Central and Delaware and Lackawanna were in the yan of the movement, as the decline of the first trom 8414 to 70%, and of the latter from 108 to 102)4, will bear witness, Investors still continue to bring their holdings to market under the whip and spur of a daily shrinkage 1m values, and the highwayman short interest depletes them on the way with the stand and deliver threat of seller 60 options. Western Union and Lake Shore were affected in a minor degree by the weakness of the coal specialties, Dut suffictently to carry their quotations down to the lowest points in several weeks, the first touching 645 and the latter 515%. Central and Hudson again attracted more than ordi- | Bary interest to-day, and thongh there scarcely any yieldingin price the stock was rather freely offered at a concession from the regular selling rate of 4 per cent on seller 60 options, This grow! on tho part of the bears is a very loud one and a very ominous one also, ana appears to be elicited from the belief that the Commodore's chances for restoration to health are more than doubttul, and that under any circumstances the fignres for the stock are artificially high in view of the shrinkage which is taking place in ull sorts of properties, Like the Coal Blocks there 16 very little of it procurable for speculative purposes, and hence operators have refrained from sell- ing it short, but there is no doubt that a shurp decline, unless resisted by the Vanderbilt interest, would shako out shares quite as quickly as has happened in the caso of the anthracite carriers. The price of Erie, cabled from London at 11%, bad A dopressing effect here, and carried the figure down to 13, to the satisfaction of bears genorally, and of Valentine and Orson particularly, As usual, Pacific Mail was full of contrarities, and rather advanced than receded with the rest of the market, and, in fact, as the day was closing, proved + the magnet which drew the prices of the whole list in the direction of better figuges. Hovering about 23 for vance under the information that such legal steps bad been taken as would assure the clection for a new di- rection being held on Saturday, and it closed with great firmnees at 2434, It had the effect also of giving afillip to the entire market, advancing Delaware and Lackawaona to 103%, Lake Shore to 5213, Western Union to 6514, aad Now Jersey Central to 81, As for tho remaining sccurities dealt in on the floor of the Stock Exchange, the less said of them the few’r ‘words needed, THE SALES TO-DAY, The transactions at the Stock Exchange to-day ag- gregated 188,400 shares:—New York Central and Hud- gon, 1,800; Erie, 26,850; Lake Shore, 63,300; North- western, 400; do. preferred, 700: Rock Island, 700; Pa- cific Mull, 16,100; St, Paul, 5,100; do, preferred, 3,400; Ohios, 2,800; Western Union, $4,300; Wabash, 100; Union Pacific, 1,300; Panama, 100; Michigan Central, 14,080; Now Jersey Central, 7,575; Delaware, Lacka- wanna and Western, 5,620; Union Mining Company, 1,400; Missouri Pacific, 500.
