a a ey | : _Attention — ol 10 AMUSEMENTS, “UNCLE TOM'S CABIN” AT THE PARK THEATRE. Notwithstanding the thunder, the lightning aud the rain, the Park Theatre had a fair audience last night to see the first performance of the famous play of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin’? on the west side of the town for along while, The play was received by the house with laughter and applause, and we think that it is a worthy successor of Mr, Rowe's “Brass” aud will probably have alongran, Mrs. G, C. Howard was the central figure of the piece. This actress 1s identified with the charactor of Topsey, which she created, and in which sho ts far above rivairy, and, indeed, without a real competitor on the stage. If Mrs, Howard bad given as much study aud as many yeurs to whut is supposed to be the legitimate drama as she has devoted to the creation of Topsey she would have made her mark, beyond doubt, as one of the Mnest “society”? actresses of our time.’ Her performance of Topsey is tull of humor, thos, energy, eccentricity and human character, rhe scenes in the third act were inimitable. At times she moved the audience to laughter by her deticious Singing and dancing, and again made the eyes of the ladies, especially, dewy by her naive and passionate repeniance. ‘Topsey, and deserves no ordinary credit for the intel- lectuai ‘methods with which she bas displayed a char- acter of Southern America which is now ante-bellum, and, because of the results of the war, almost is ex- inet as We fossils of the antedilnvian age, The act nerally was very good, Uncle Tom was well rendered by Mr, George Kunkel and St. Clair by Mr, Howaed. Cassy was fluely played by Miss Roso Lisle, whose only misfortune this season hus boen that she has been obliged to play characters below her powers, and, as it Were, *to crush a butterfly upon a or “raise a whirlwind to drown a fly. Aunt rgia Jubileo Singers were warmly received, We mired, as all the spectators scemed to do, the charm- ing per:ormance of Bou Heron ax Eva, yet it is to bo hoped that promising actress will not be pushed pa strongly, She has much abihty, but she is me child, wad'it would be pity. to make a hothouse prete sure on the budding flower or to brash the bloom from the tender peach, “JULIUS CHSAR” AT BOOTH’S THEATRE, The revival of this spectaclo at Booth’s last night was welcomed by a good house, There was the old caste, and the reappearances of Mr. Lawrence Barreit, Mr. F, C, Bangs aud Mr, E. L. Davenport were re- ceived with hearty applause, ‘nis 18 the only week of “Juhus Cwsar” at Booth’s, as nearly all of the actors have engagements elsewlicre—Mr. Lawrence Barrett pons to Calliornio, the Roman legions returning to reland and Mr. Tooker accompanying the fast line to Abe Pacitic. SAN FRA ISCO MINSTRELS. There was a lively_and joyous entertainment last evening at the charmimy little home of negro minstrelsy on Broadway. All the best features of this popular fund of amusement were sirictly maintained—to wit, novelty, fun und refinement, and a strict adhesion to the main ideas which trom the beginning attracted so much attention to this quaint exhibition of talent, The programme lagt evening included everything that was calculated to excite the risiilty of a fair assemblage, = With = Mr, Wambold "in his exquisite rendering of “Little Darling, Staile on Me,” and the subseqaent exhibitions of Mezers. Birch and s in their inimitable impersonations, to say Mr, Ryman’s exceedingly humorous t py ture, the audience had every excuse for the frequent outbursts of laughter which resoundea throughout the house. ‘The imitations of popular classical artists by Mr, Backus are worthy the close every misunthropst, ‘Julius the Snoozer,” a peculiar aaaptation of a well known Shakespearean production, brought a really delightful performance to a close. EAGLE THEATRE. An excellent programme was given at this theatro mstevening. The wretched weather nad iis effect on the attendance, which, under ordinary circumstances, 4s invariably large, but the inauspicious surroundings were quickly forgotten when one was comfortably Seated in the coscy theatre. The programme glistened with fun and variety, interpreted by some of the best artists in their way, and throughout the evening un Interrupted enjoyment prevailed. It would be a task to recount the numerous excellent features with which | tho bill was so profuse, but suillce it, that the inventive genius of many 9 clever artist must have beon | faxed in tho production of such racy sketches were presented. * In — this ‘connection male ht be mentioned “Podge,” in which Mr, John Wild peared with advantage, e Watch Dog,” in which ‘ke saine clover-eomedian, Mr. H. G. Richmond and others took part. Among the other contributors to the evening's entertainment were Mr, Tooley, witt his excellont German songs; Mr. A. W, Sawyer in his really excellent pertormance on glasses, from which he produces exquisite tones, Conspicuous among the alaxy of talent was the popular artist, Miss Jennie ughes, whose charming and artistic vocal efforts won universal recognition. Miss Hughes renewed her pre- vious triumphs and at present bids fair to occupy an enviable position asa commedienne, The performance was altogether exceedingly gratifying, and Mr. Hart has thus far done much to maintam bis establishment in the most desirable form. Woon's MUSEUM. The one act comedy entitled, “‘Bamboozling,” and the burlesque known as “The Fair One with the Blonde Wig,” formed the attraction at tnis establish- ment last evening. The weather was anything but auspicious, nevertheless the performance was heartily | appreciated, more especially the musical goms with whieh it was interspersed, Miss Adah Ricnmond, Miss Lizzie Kelsey, Miss Nellie Allen and Mr. Harry Allen sustained the principal parts in the burlesque, aud in every instance generous app!ause greeted their efforts, ‘The audience seemed well pleased with the entortain- ment. CENTRAL PARK GARDEN, ‘The concert at Central Park Garden last evening was sadly tuterfered with in regard to attendance, Yet the musical features wore of no little interest. Downing’s orchestra, thirty-three strong, piayed Rossini’s over- jure, ‘%talieni in Algiera,’? the Indian mareh from “LAfricaine,"? Lassen’s festival overture, opus 51, the | well known Pizzicato polka of the younger Johann Strauss, seiectigns trom Verdi's “Masked Ball,” a lovely serenade by Schubert, and “Du und Da” waltz, by Strauss, he goloists were Mine. Marie Salvotti, an excollent finger and thoroughly accomplished artiste; Miss Lizzie M. Rae, a clever débutante, and Mr, Hammond, ted cornet player. The management proposes to engage Mile. Marie Aimee, at $1,000 per week, for the summer. It may prove a good speculation. BROOKLYN NEW PARK THE TRE. A new Irish drama, rejoicing in the decidedly Celtic name of **Kerry-Gow-Dhuivl,”’ was presented for the | The play is called | first time at this theatre last night. a new one, bat it is certainly not the plot or dialogue which merits this epithet. All the friends of our childhood were present on the stage—tho old Ii vile lain, the young “colleen,” with her unreasoning love for the ardent patriot; the Saxon solders and the “cause.’” There wore, however, some things which may fairly be called original. A horse was shod upon the stage by Mr. Jee Murphy, who, ii report says true, is a member of that honorable prutession which 18 60 remarkabie for muscle. The costumes were rather centric, and had the rare merit of combining almost tvery fusbion that hus been in vogue sifce the time of Charles I, of lamented memory. The Enylish was also redolent of various climes, in inet, every variety, from the nasal twang of New England to the rich brogue of Connaught was heard in turn. ‘The Doyle Brothers” is to supplant thw ingeniously named drama next week, “BRASS” AT THE RROOKLYN THEATRE. Mr. George Fawcett Rowe made his first appearance in Brooklyn last night as the erratic and irrepressible Walton Stray in his original comedy “Brass? Mr. Rowo played with all his usual vivacity, and kept the audience in constant laughter by his amusing charac. terization, There were s Original cast at the Prk, Mary Markson with remarkable strength and feel Fo young an actress, This lady is gilted wit telient stage appearance and a sweet and voice, she no doubt will, with careful make a useful and aecomp! Mr. Cyril Searle, who played a juvenile part in New York, made a new departure and appeared last ight ax Mr. Markson, the lawyer. Mr. Searle has not done wisely in thus abandoning a part in wuteh he had made « decided success. “Brava is advertised for every evening this week and for a matinée on Saturday, MUSICAL AND DRAMATIC NOTE. City officials wore indicted | for bribery and malfeusance, and the indictments wero | afterward reconsidered. Tho County Clerk, Mr. Brann, | Placed important papers in the possession of the Grand Jury, and the more important ducuments were spirited away or destroyed. When he demanded the return of these papers yesterday from the clerk of the Grand Jury he was informed that only « 1ew of them could be found. The system of selecting grand juries by com. | mission has become a standing reproach. Oficial frauds are covered up at every term of court and Rotorious malefactors go unpunished.
