8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Dull and Weak— A Summer Day's Business. GOLD STEADY AT 2 1-2, Government and Railway Bonds Firm—In- vestment Shares Steady—Money on Call Loans 2 and 2 1-2 Per Cente ———— Watt Street, Mowpar, May 15—6 P. If the two pigeons which fluttered into the Stock Exchango (0-day through its open windows conceived Bhat their appearance would be greeted in the light of @ presage of coming events, as was augured by the fight ot birds in the old Roman times, or if they wimply desired to pay their respects to such of their pwn kindred as might be present, they mistook the: vocation. Brokers are the reverse of super- Btitious, and gain no satisfaction from the examina- tion of a bird's viscera, unless it be in the Bhape of woodcock’s trail on toast, and as for Ybe genus Columba, every Stock Exchange pigeon was plucked long ago, and there ts’ not seductive salt pnough in the whole street to capture even the imma- torest of squabs. So our gallinaceous friends, having Buttered in, fluttered ont again, probanly discoursing In pigeon English on the scene they had looked down Bpon, but in no wise affecting the market. In fact, Hothing did affect the market the whole day through. Business was as stupid asa “screaming farce” at a Vv tiety theatre, and transactions as scarce as prizes ina lottery. A certain amount of strength was exhibited at the tommencement, for a considerable amount of orders, which had been aggregated and bottled up over Sun- | Gay, were let loose upon the market like a cork out of bottle, Dut the succeeding effervescence disappeared @s quickly as the fizz from spurious champagne. From this time on to the close fluctuations marked by a balf Per cent variation were the order of the day, and the @mount of dealings were equally unimportant, Lake Shore opened ‘at 547), dropped to 543% and Closed at the latter price, Western Union oscillated | from 66% to 064, and finished up an eignth better, While Michigan Central received as little attention as | & wallflower at a fashionable party, and even this was uncomplimentary, for it was in the shape of proposals | do sel! the stock under the market price, at a difference | of 1 por cent for sixty or 44 percent forten days Such | dealings as took place were confined to these few stocks, | though Pacific Mail, neglectea as it was, showed @ noticeable firmness, due, probably, toa demand for Proxies and shares for trans‘er im view of the ap- | proaching election, Tho sellers of the coal stocks | Beem to ve disinclined to push their contracts on tho | short side of the speculation since the rejuvenescence | of the combination from a possible apprehension of tumbling into some bottomless pit which the com- panics might dig for them. The intense dulness seemed to have blighted the im- Bgination of even the rumor mongers, for they had no tales to tell, and, beyond whispering the probatility of & dividend on Western Union and suggesting bids for it | Bt the figure of 14 por cent, their occupation was as much gone as was Vthello’s, The appearance of Jay Bould in the strectat anecarly bour this morning was taken as a token of something important | fo happen, and brokers stood like bounds | in the slips ready to sei and worry the | Ppportunity, but no quarry appeared in sight and no avidence of game anywhero, unless it were in a tran- Bient and spasmodic activity in Union Pacitic, which | dropped off one per cent from the best prices. In two | words, the market of to-day is but a continuation of the brokers’ market of last week and last month and last year, The milking process, so well known in the Doard, still continues and has been applied to both ‘bulls and bears, and although the most expert of milk- maids might declare the operation impossible, for physical reasons, it is nevertheless quite within the power (financially speaking) of the majority of the | street. The Legislature of Ualifornia has passed a law re- quiring companies organized in that State to file a cer- tified copy of their articles of incorporation in each of the counties where they own property. A similar law in Colorado applics to all companies wherever or- ganized. The Tigress Silver Mining Company, of Storcy county, Nevada, is incorporated with a capital of $10,000,000, It 1s expected, on account ef its name, to have a large patronage from a class accustomed to com- bat with the male animal of the same spectes. The San Francisco papers argue elaborately in favor y | of the assessment feature of their companies, but the | | system loses in popularity in the ratio of distance be- ‘tween the stockholder and the local office. An assessment of seventy-five cents per share hai been levied by tho Jefferson Mining Company, de Lnquent June 9 Chollar Company took out 109 tons ore in a single day, shipping 88% tous May 3 In the Silver Hill mino the cast and west crosscut from the wings are each ad- vanced 2 to 244 feet per day, without apparent change to 4th inst. Therock is hard Diasting and flow of water strong. California mine shipped, on 4th, 111 bars bullion, valued at $52,440. Total to that date, $1,300,000, The Overman Mining Company shipped ten caf loads of ore on the Ist and continuo at the rate of five loads per day. The general features of the Washoe mines are but little changed during the first week in May. The Ophir is said to develop richer ore in going south, on the 1,600 foot level, toward the California line. The bullion yield of the Consolidated Virginia was cut somewhat short by an accident to one of their best mills. Hence the reduced product for both Apriland May and the lower quotation for the shares. The ore body in the Imperial continues to extend to the northward, and the prospects are that the Alpha drift on the 2,000 foot level will soon cut the same ore vein, Tho Julia has just opened a station at the 1,800 toot level In the Yellow Jacket preparations are being made to as- certain the value of the mine below the 1,940 foot level. Work in the Sierra Nevada, Belcher, Sttver Hill and Julia mines is continued without important change | m the indications, The daily yield of the Belcher is stated to be 400 tons.
