AMUSEMENTS. EAGLE THEATRE. Thisebarming little theatre was crowded last eren- ing, the bill being an entirely new ove. There were tWo very enjoyable sketches, in which Mr. Joba Wild took the most prominent part—TLe Lawyer's Clerk” and “Pompey’s Patients.’ Mr. Bradley sang the praises of “John Munahan’s Donkey,” a particularly touching ditty; the Victorelli Brothers went through the entre gamut of acrobatism and the double fiddle; Miss Jennie Hughes, a very talented singer and soubrette, brought down the house vy her imimitable serio-comic sougs; Mr. Sawyer tried to extract music out of a lot of glasses and Mr. wodwin to tmitate Gi The bill closed with & burlesque on * Heur! GLOBE TH¥ATRE, ‘The variety busivess is beginning to lose many of the attractions which formerly distinguished it, and the theatres devoted to that style of performance are about Adopting the practice of giving a drama along with other features. This formidable atair ts called, “Under the Gallows.” ‘There bas bean a delusion in the minds vf some pet ere were bounds even to sen- fntional dr Dngering tdcas of unity und common seuse were lelt in this sanguinary style of en- lertainment. Mr. Norton bus suceeeded in entirely dispelling this ilusion, for “Under the Gallows"? 18 one of those wonderfully coustructed and heterogeneous things that would defy even Mr, Boucicault to fathom is meaning. The play may bs regarded as an un- fathomable ridale, SAN PEANCISCU MINSTRELS, The bil! for this weck, as given by those 1n!mitable joas of Momus, Billy Birch and Charley Backus, com- prises some of the most humorous leatures of their ap- purentlv inexhaustible répertoire. BROOKLYN THRATRE. ‘The early part of the performunce at this theatre last gvening was not calculated to awaken much eathu- Siasm. Indeed, to the efforts of the orchostra may bo Attriouted the fuct that inany struggled trom talling into a sound sicep, The “charming domestic play” entitled “Pride” was a very stupid and commonplace affuir from beginning to ond. Perhaps the only re- decining teature of the absurd production was the réle at Alice, portrayed by Miss Charlotte Thompson, whose excellent iwpersonation of the devoted lover and taithful daughter relieved at times the monotony that prevailed. She had worthy assisiance in Mrs, Farren and Sir, H. B Phillips tn the parts of Mme. Hombere vad Mr. Tannewhoi, respectively, but im the cusv of Mr. Edward Arnott’ as Courad Arnau, the painter, it Would be unjust to the gentleman to say thut his extraordinary mannerisms met with approval. He was not at all adapted to the part as- signed bim and the piece wax altogether dull und tn interesting. Mr. Harry Josephs, a capital burlesque actor, imparted to Dame Hatiey lots of quaint humor, and, everything consid- ered, the audience had good Feason to be picased with the Joyous windup of the entertain:nent, MUSICAL AND DRAMATIC NOTES. Ga, ‘May 16, ists. ‘The village has beem to-day the scone of just expia- tion for a series Of most brutal murders Two colored | men, members of a desperate, bloodthirsty gang of colored men, bave to-day paid the penalty of their crimes with their lives on the gallows. About a yoar ago the county became the tncatre of bold robberies and itshortly became apparent that the county was ip- habited by a band of mercilees wretches who, when Pressed, took refuge in a dense neighboring swamp. Qu the 15th of Junuary Mr. James H, Cochran, a quiet, well-to-do citizen, living near Eden, a small station on the Central road, left home early in the morning jeaVing his wife-and daughter, a pretty, winsome little child, tm cha of the house, In th e fleld bear by, about a dozen negroes, bired as farm laborers, were at work. Mr, Cochran’s son, a boy of about thir- teen years of age, was engaged just across the railroad Although Mr, Cochran's honse had been robbed in the open daylight a few days previous and plundered of a great many vuluables, besides about $400 in money, he felt no uneasiness, as it was impossible that any- | hing should occur ut the house without being known to the negroes‘in the field. At noon young Cochran re- turned to the house for dinner, and entering his moth- ers room, was struck dumb with horror, The house bad been ransacked from one end to the other, and in a corner of the eastern room lay the corpses OF IS MOTIKR AND SISTER WKLTEKING IN THEIR BLOOD. He once yave the alarm and tho uelzhbors xeon col Jected in great force, It was found that Mrs. Cochran, be, est badly mutilated, had been shot twice, evidently from a Orearm. lield close to bier lead. girl had’ been shot out once, that shot © instantly fatal, county at oce rose im arms and determined to hunt the villains down, Amos Hines, a powerful and adroit mulatto, always accredited as jeader of the band, and Prince Roberson, Charies Will- ums, Henry Green, Daniel Davis aud Pau! Campbell were euspected of the crime. Many subsequeut crimes followed, evidently the work of the same band, who were hunted for weeks by the cutire white population of the county, Bines was at length captured ip Savannah, and b taken back to this county he was shot and killed by somo of the gung. At lergth Prince Roberson, Daniel Davie and | Paul Campbell were put on trial for the mur. ders of Mrs, Cocbron and: her daughter, The testimony Was very direct against them, and the Jury promptly convicted them. They subsequently became the subjects of a religious revival and confessed tho murder, They were exceedingly low-conditioned fel jows, with ‘not a single good feuture, They were of the lowest class of negroes, and wore danbt Jess led ito all the enormities they commitied by the superior address of Amos Biees, who was a mau of some power. THK EXKCUTION. This morning the prisoners Paul Campbell and Prince Roberson arrived im charge of the Sheriff’ and accom- panved by a Catholic priest, Father Cullinane, #t ‘ingflel!
