W JEALOUSY AND MURDER. FURTHER DETAILS OF THE MURDER OF SAMUEL | SCHENCK, AT ROSLYN, L. 1. ‘The colored man who was brutally assaulted with heavy batchet on Thursday afternoon of last week at Roslyn, L. L, ig named Samuel Schenck, ‘Kobinsou”’ boing only an alias. The report of his death proves to have been premature and the result of a mistake as to his actual condition. His case is regarded us one of the most extraordinary that bave ever puzzled the doc- tora, as it is seldom that so much vitality is exhibited under such circumstances. The man’s skull is mashed 0 that bie brain oozes from the wound, as well as from his ear, and bis right side is entirely paralyzed, Ever eince the assault he has laid im an unconscious state, and his medical attendants, Drs. Bogart und Fields, are at a loss to know what keeps him ulive, His recovery, however, is impossible, as death mast soon take place from mortificavion. An examination of the principal wound reveals the fact that the skull is one-eighth of an inch in thickness. He is lying in the house of his agsailant—W illiam Fowler, alas Bullwagon—near the lauding of Roslyn harbor, and is attended by Fowler's Wile aud one of the neighbors. AS near as can be ascertained from persons who were witnesses of the murderous encouulter, it grew out ot jealousy on the part of both Fowler and Schenck, on account of Fowler's wile, It appears that Sche: who tas wile and daughter residing at Oyster Ba has for several years past lived at Koslyn a portion of the time with Fowler, aud bas turnisved a large pro- portion of the articies used im the nouse, and that at dne time when ill he was nursed by Fowler’s wile. On Wecnesday of last week both the n were engaged by ur. Hicks, the proprietor of a coal and lumber yard at Roslyn, to unload coal, for which they were paid ou Thursday morning, each receiving $3. airs, Fowler's birthday fell upon Thursday, aud for her kind- \ | | ! | aess to him, alter paying some bills tor groceries and | moet, Salnner purchased a dregs for her und presented it to her. where they were joined by Alexander Jackson, and the three amused themselves until noon by playing cards, but drinking very litt. At noon Mrs, Fowler an- nounced that dinner was ready; Jackson was invited to a seat at the tablo, and Schenck deciined to eat, say- tng that he did not wish for any dinner. At this Fowler became angry; hot words ed between the two, and they clinched, Schenck throwing Vowler heavily to the tloor. They clinched the second time, and Jackson refusing to inierfere, Mrs, Fowler went for a neighbor, named Thomas Valentine. Woing to the house Valentine put Schenck out of doors and locked the door, keeping Fowler imside. Fowler, bowever, managed to get out of one of the windows, And running around the house again met Schenck, who at this time had the axoor hatchet, Mrs. Fowler had also by this time got out of doors, and taking the axe from Schenck threw it into the hall. Fearing that the men would kill each other, she went to Mr. Hicks for assistance, and he advised her to get an oflicer, but Defore her return Fowler had got possession of the axe, and rushing at Schenck dealt him two powerful blows with it, inflicting the injuries which will cause his death, ’ Fowler then went to Justice Kirby, told what he had done and was subsequently sent to'the county Jail. Both the men have hitherto borne good reputations, especially Schenck, who has been regarded as a quiet 4nd inoffensive man Schenck is about forty-five years old. Fowler is about thirty year old, and could no doubt have bandlea Schenck readily. dissolute character and generally teared by the men in she neighborhood, his strength betug extraordinary, AN INFERNAL MACHINE, A CLERK DISCOVERS IT BEFORE ITS WORK 18 ACCOMPLISHED—AN INVESTIGATION TO BE MADE TO-DAY, Shortly after seven o’clock last night, as one of the employés of the firm of Nicholas & Coon, dealers and manufacturers of artificiul flowers, at No. 640 Broadway, was about to close up the store for the nignt, ho observed dense volumes of smoke issuing from beneath the Staircase, Proceeding to investigate the cause, he found under the stairs, on the top of several cases of straw goods, a box made of thin pine boards, wrapped in Drown paper, from which the smoke proceeded. He immediately took down the box and tore off the cover, On the inside was a smaller, round cardboard box, the cover of which was perforated with jholes. He’ saw the light of a candle shining through and immediately extinguished it. ‘Tbe young man who discovered the | smoke immediately wished to inform the police, but another clerk, who was in bis company, seemed reluctant, His objections being overruled they informed Officer Maher, of the Fourteenth pre- cinet, who took the box to the station house. The box ‘was ¢xamined very carefully on the outside by Captain Allaire and Inspector Dilks, leaving the more perilous task of examining the inside to the Fire Marsha; to-day. ‘The box was fourteen inches bigh by ten long and eight broad. There were alot of shavings between the inner box rnd the outer one, mixed with powder. Into the top of the inner box ran a Jurge fuse connecting with the powder and shavings, Where the fuse ended was not investigated by the police, but it is supposed that it would have taken several hours to burn. The two clerks were taken to the station house and closely ex amined. Fire Marshal Sbeidon was notified of the lacts and will make a thorough investigation to-day, DEFALCATION. FRAUDS IN THE BROOKLYN OFFICE OF ARREARS OF TAXES—A MOODY AND SANKEY USHER THE ALLEGED CULPRIT, A defaleation was discovered yesterday in the office of Register of Arrears, of Brooklyn, which caused great excitement in official circles. Another warrant was ob- tained from Justice Walsh, on complaint of the present incumbent of the office of Register of Arrears, Mr. Danicl D, Whitney, charging Solomon with embezzling tho sum of $117. The for- mer warrant, which was placed in the hands of De- lective Shaughnessey, was executed at seven o'clock last evening, when the accu: custody at his residence, No, 387 Myrtle avenue, upon bis retura from New York, where he bas been em- ployed for several months past. It appears that the alleged offences were committed chiefly under the ad- ministration of the former Registrar, and it ts impos- sible as yet to form any estimate of the ag- gregate amount taken by Solomon. As receiving clerk, he took the money from the taxpayers whose taxes were in arrears, aud, entering tho amvuat ona “tickier,,’ passed it down to two other clerks, who also made entries trom the bill, and then, the clerk ut the lower end of the’ counter banded it out Tecerpted to the taxpayer. It appears, however, that the accused, in the hurry of business ‘and under the impulse of temptation, signed certain bills, “Wilham Little, per Solomon,” aud, failing to make any entry the amount on the “tiekler,” { ‘the receipted bills out at his window to the taxpayer. Of course there was no record on any of the oilice books of the amounts thus received, About a year ago Mr. Little, who is a republican, was superseded by Mr. Whitney, democrat, and a change took piace in the personnel ot the sub- ordinates in the office. Solomon was discharged nine days after Mr, Whitney’s appoimtment. Ono hundred invited guests stepped on bdard at Pier 48, North River, about eleven o'clock in the forenoo: Messrs, Sheridan Shook and Maurice Grau gave the sig! and the boat started for the Quarantine station ‘on Staten Island, A band of music tooted forth in- | spiring melodies, Offenbach, Strauss and Downing commingled, and the boat hands ran up the flags of America, France and Germany, until there was quite a respectable show of bunting on the Blackbird. After # long stay at Staten Island, during which the steam- ships Scythia and Lessing passed up to their respective docks, there were grave doubts expressed as to the probability of the French steamer arriving before morning, One enterprising individual suggested pool selling to decide the question; another insisted upon going out to meet the steamship, regardless of time or aistance, While the Lessing lay at anchor for a short time awaiting the arrival of the Health OMicer, the Biackbird steamed around her, the band playing them- selves almost hoarse in ‘Die Wacht am Rhein” and “Star-Spangled Banner.” The decks of the German vessel wore crowded with emigranta, who probably thought that the gayly bedecked Blackbird was sent down specially tor their benefit, deach took to himaecit of herself individually the nplimentary pester, “Welcome.” placed conspicu- ously beneath the pilot house. Then, after another truitiess call at the Lelenrepl office, the Blackbird went down the Bay, Squeamish stomachs among the in- vVited compelied a busty return to Quarantine. Another trip was essayed and Sandy Hook was almost reacned, ‘There was quite a lively sen on, and it, of course, made things lively for those unaccustomed to ‘go down to the sea in ships.”? The German musicians gave an unerring record of the second trip in regard to its mal de mer effects, Passing through the Narrows they blew lustly on one of Strauss’ waltzes; then, epurrod up by an extra glass of lager, they tackled « Centennial March, But, with Coney Island on the lee and the long ground swe becoming every minute more visious, the tones of the march be- came tunereal, and there was many an empty chair and many adoserted horn. An halt hour later and nothing less than a boiler explosion could have roused those Teutonic disciples of Wagner or have drawn them away from close communion with the waves that danced around the Blackbird. At length the order was given to return to the city, and the party sorrowfully gave up hopes of mocting Offenbach on that day. The Canada was sighted off Sandy Hook at two o’clock this morning, and will be at her dock before t| excursiontéts have slept off the fatigues of yesterday's hunt. OBITUARY. JUDGE H, 8. JOHNSON.
