FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, — A Sharp Decline in Stocks—Investment Securities Under Pressure. GOLD 113 18 A 113. Woney on Call Loans 3 and 4 Per Cent— Government Bonds Steady and Active— The Silver Issue—Poreign Ex- change Firmer. e Watt Street, } ‘tuvrspay, April 20-6 P, M. “Black diamonds” at home are, apparently, getting 48 much out of favor as the saffron-hucd ones that come from South Africa, if we may judge from the con- dition of the companies that bring them to market, This was manifested to-day in the serious decline in the shares of the coal corporations, which usually afford but little speculative interest, being mostly held off the market on investment account. Yet to-day they were pressed for sale as though the entire business was to be transferred to Newcastle forthwith. New Jersey Central fell from 997g to 9634, Delaware and Lackawanna from 113 to 109, while trom Philadelphia the price for Reading was quoted at 85, or ‘ten points off from yesterday, At one time, on an op- thon of seller 30, there was a difference in the shares of Delaware and Lackawanna between the time contract and previous cash sale of 34% per cent, while 3 per cent was offered for tho same period in New Jersey Central. From this itis evident that the bears are looking for stilllower prices, which they belicve will prevail trom the depressed state of the coal trade ‘and the unprofitable leases and mining investments with which the companies are loaded. At the close of ‘business, howevor, the shares above referred to expe- rienced a trifling improvement, Jn the railroad fancies Lake Shore and Michigan Central were the Castor and Pollux of the market—the “par nobile fratrum’’—that went up the scale of prices together and down again, and remained steady, as though they were ruled by a sing! impulse, Or like the youthful hero and herome of Mother Goose, who climbed the hill to fill their pail and came to disaster as many another Watered stock has done before. Michigan Central got the worst of the fall, for it was measured by the dis- tance between 5234 and 51, while Lake Shore, stumbling At the point of 55%, brought up somewhat shaken at 545; Of course, in both of these stocks there were fluctuations between the points we have named, those of Lake Shore betag small and sluggish, while. the reverso was tho case in Michigan Central ‘There was nothing new in the way of railroad intelligence to further affect the market, and the twins scm to de floating out to sea on the ebb tide which has fora week past been flowing so strongly. While ratiroad shares were heavy or declining, Pacific ‘Mail and Western Union were as fixed and impassive as “Patience on a monument,”’ smiling at tho gricf the rest of the list was coming to, At the close, however, they gave way somewhat with the rest of the list and under the belief that Gould was selling.
