‘NEW YORK HERALD, FRIDAY, APRIL 14, 1876:-TRIPLE SHEET. “TINANCLL AND COMMERCIAL, |8 : Bear Market—Prices Much Lower—A De- pressed Feeling, ‘GOLD 113 1-4 A 113 3-8 A 113 1-4. Money on Call Loans 3 a 3 1-2 Per Cent— Government Bonds Easy and Quiet— Railway Bonds Steady and Investments Irregular— A Good Friday Holiday. Wat Strzer, ‘Tuvrspar, April 13—6 P. ‘| ‘Mr, Conner sprung into view at tho Stock Exchange thia morning, after bis ‘days of absence, long and freary,” like a Jack out of a box, and the reason thereof was the tismissal by Judge Barrett of the so- ealled “Black Friday” suit, There is probably nota broker on the street at all conversant with the circum- Bances who doce not believe the testimony of plaintif’s witnesses as to their employment by the Bould-Fisk Ring to be strictly true; yet there is no tase, because written orders were either not given or ‘re at present missing. The decision will result in at \eagt one practical good if it opens the eyes of commis- won brokers to the risks they take in accepting verbal orders from customers. More than one of them can instance occasions where transactions were repudiated by principals when stocks went the wrong way, and more still are likely to encounter the same experience iu their réle of suppliants for favors at the hands of the great Gambling act pleader. Tlie prevailing firmness of last evening faded away almost at the outset of bust- ness, The Samson of the market was shorn of his Mrength by the Delilah ot unfavorable news. Tho ‘ocks of the railways fell in masses to the working of she shears, and the thinner hairs of the less active stocks were clipped and trimmed with most uncom- fortable assiduity. All of which means a market effectually snubbed by the long threatened railroad war which has at last broken out into actual hostili- hes, Like most treaties, this railway pact ms only fo have been mado to be broken, and the results to veated interests, will undoubtedly bo more serious \han if it had never been entered into, Novertheless, though judicious stockholders may grieve at the de- preciation of their property, the great public will aot mourn over a contest which will afford theaper conveyance for man and merchandise than has been offered for many a day, While the entire system of cast and west leading roads felt the effect of the independent Struggle ior business which scems imminent, Lake Bhore and Michigan Central were the greatest sufferers, Dpening strong at 683%, alter a slight advance, Lake Shore commenced to descend and so continued until the price touched 5634; at this point a slight rally en- sued, which wound up the quotation at 5635 and the day’s business with it, Transactions were vast in amount, great blocks of long stock being thrown overboard, while heavy sales on the short account were made to depress the price. Michigan Central was equally unfortunate in its tareor, and fell off from 58% to 5644, under unusually extensive sales, The same reasons prevailed for the decline in this as did in the other roads; but thero is added to this an existing impression that a truthful showing of the condition of the property would ve far from 4 satisfactory one, Erie fol- lowed suit in weakness, as it did in ac- tivity, and embraced the extremes of 18 and 163j. Tho British Commissioners have been home long enough to give some expression to their views, but as yet they make no sign—at least publicly. Hold- ers begin to think the third rail and coupon business | to have been like the “tale told by an idiot, full of vound and fury, signifying nothing.”” ‘The Western stocks so called felt the pressure of the war in lees degree, and were comparatively negiected ander the superior attraction ¢f the speculatives we | have referred to. New Jersey Central again dropped off a point or so ander the influences which have surrounded it for the last few days. In fact, there is a suspicion of weak- ‘tess in the constitution of all dve of the great anthra- nte coal carriers, which may possibly result in @ rup- wre of the combination, The plan of a monopoly to teep up the price of coals to a fixea point when panufucturing interests were in fulf Blast and the teneral public free buyers was practicable enough, but ‘8 being found much more difficult now that miles of iron furnaces are out of blast, manufactories at a stand- still and the consumption of the past mild winter re- duced to restricted proportions, Western Union made a precipitate plunge at the very opening (selling off % per cent from last evening’s prices), under the injunction granted to the Atlantic and Pacific Company restraining the former from using the duplex improvement. The stock rallied quckly, yowe' under renewed purchases to cover shorts by twenty-third street, but when this ceased it grew deavy and sold. down to 6534. To close the account of the day the market may be feseribed as decidedly bearish, with lower prices all shrough the list—a moderate improvement taxing place | at the close, ‘THE SALES TO-Day.
