FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIL | Prices Irregular, with a Lower Tendency. A Baid on Lake Shore. | GOLD 13 A 1127 A 113. | Money Supplied at 3 1-2 Per Cent—Govern- | ments Easier—Investment Shares and | Railway Bonds Steady—Foreign | Exchange Quiet. | | | Wau. Stresr, Toxspay, April 11—6 P. M. The constitution of Wall street is as perplexing and yest Ooding out as is that of a vilious East Indian who Teturns bome with a hypothetical liver. For days past everyibing was the personification of dulness; to-day business, so far as amount and activity go, was | as lively as acrig, There was a charming uncertainty, | too, which reminded one of tho nursery ballad in | which certain parties are pictured as going “up, up, | ap,” and otners as gomg “down, down, down.” ‘The prominent speculatives exhibited this motion in | the most confusing manver, some tonding ore way and some the reverse, and others gctting into a mixture of | each. For mstance, Brie opened at 17% and ran up to 187% and. back ogain to 18%. This on better prices from London. Lake Shore, on the contrary, made a | perristent plunge from 59%; to 5844, and at the close bad pot come to the surface of any better quotation. Pacific Mail followed a middie course by holding its own for a good part of the day at about 184, returning ultimately to 15%. Western Union was the puzzle of the lot, as instead of making lower figures under tho pressure of the cutting down of rates proclamation on the part of Atlantic and Pacific, stoutly refused to give | way, and acttvely closed a fraction better than it had | opened, | The sustaining power of Twenty-third stroet was | plainly seen in orders to cover shorts, while but little long stock and less on bearish account came upon the murket, In fact, this favorito was in a measure neglected, and the great wave of speculation surged and beat among the rocks and qnicksands of Erie and Lake Shore. It was in the latter stock, however, that | the prime interest of the day centred, and though its course was continuously downward, with only the | mildest of reactions, the transactions were enormous, approaching rome 100,000 sbares. All tho large operators appeared to have a flager in the pie, aud Osborn, Henry Smith and others of that | lk were extensive sellers. Tho entire board was of the opinion that “something was up,” but what that | something cunsisted in was not clearly known. A re- | newal of tho railroad war, a dumping over of a largo | block of stock held since higher prices and which at | the decline proved a medicine more poworful than tho | bolder and his margins could stagger under ana other rumors, as absurd as they were impossible, were the | reasons given for the fall. A judge of old port would have described the market | as ‘‘curious,’? which it undoubtedly was, in tho way of the strange antics it played and its general heteroge- neous nature.
