H. ‘McAllister and R. 8, Putney. Thomas | Davis’ 18° the pastor of Attorney street toolored) Methodist Episcopal church ia this ciy, Matton of the ety mission circuit, Me" had not read uny of the books _ prescribed for study, but was able, nevertheless, to put the Ex- amining Committee through a very shrewd course of questioning on the subject matter of the studies. Some of the brethren o: Conference were not inclined to continue Mr. Davis, because of his neglect or failure | to read the books prescribed with the under- standing that he shail pass an examimation on the first year’s studies before the next Con- ference, be was continued. Smith A. Sands wittingly brought on a discussion of his case. He has had two small charges for the Inst year aud received from both only $300, and Dr. Curry thought it would | be cruel to a young man of his talents and ability to continue him longer on starvation salary, Besides he, 100, had not pursued tho studies as required, but, as by the testimony of Messrs, Hammond, Terry, Adams, ‘aunders and others, he has “religion” and knows Low to preach it, be, ne oo, was continued, But 1 was that of James H. Hand, a cond ciass, who is “a mighty huuter if not before the Lord, He ts a goed preac' ber but ha: a passion for field sports to appear before the Kxamining Committee or belore the Conference, and it was quite a puzzle to know His Presiding Kider has given him The Conference continued him with the understanding that his Presiding Elder shall give him another talking to, and let him know at the same ime what the sense of the Conference ts and pastimes. ‘The other deacons of the second class continued were A. B. Saniora, Rs. Eldridge and E£, A, Blake, A super- annuated relation was granted to Nathanial Mead, who has been iu the effective ranks since 1835, The auni- yersary of the Conference Temperance Society was held in the evening, when addresses were made by Dr, B, M. Adams, presiding, and by Revs. E. J. Haynes, D, 0. Ferris and R. H. Rust. NEW YORK CONFERENCE. ‘The eighty-sixth annual session of the New York Methodist Episcopal Conterence was closed last even. ing in the Free Tabernacle on West Thirty fourth strect, near Eighth avenue, The morning session was made interesting beyond the usual routine business by the introduction and adoption of a resolution to memo- rialize the President of the United States and also tho Leg:siature of Pennsylvania to prohibit the sale of in- toxicating liquors on the exbibition grounds at Phila- delphia during the Centennial celebration. ‘The subject of raising « tund to assist the Wesleyan University at Middletown was na up for discus sion. Mr. A. V. Stout, the President of the Shoe and Leather Bank, in this city, gave $80,000 to endow two professorships, one for the Wesleyan University and the other for the Drew Seminary, both of $40,000 each. A colivction was then taken upin aid of the Wesleyan University and $10,000 were subscribed by the delegates. The afternoon session was occupied by the reading of reports of committees of tracts, Sun- day schools, the adoption of an amendment of the re- port on the Wesleyan University fund ro as to confine tue $500,000 to be collected as an endow- ment fund and not for current ¢xpenditures; the adoption of the repom of the Treasurer, slating that the collections during the year had amounted to $44,884 66; the adoption of resolu. tions complimentary to the Rey. Bishop R. P. Foster, the secretaries, the Committee of Entertainment, the iamilies who had so kindly extended their bospitalt- ies to the delegates and to the officers of the church, The various examining committees for classes of the next year were announced. The Bisbop anuounced the appointment of ministers for the following year, tnd the Conierence adjourned to meet at Cat: ¥., next spring. MOODY The Hippodrome meetings were all crowded yester- day, At the noonday services Mr, Moody spoke on “Cornelius;”” in the afternoon on “Peter,” and in the evening on the ‘Penitent Thief.” This thief, he said, knew nothing of baptism or any of the orthodox rules of any church, out was converted instantaneously. So can any mau here to-night no matter how scarlet his gins, how deep the sink of iniquity into which he has fallen, He can be converted it he will accept the grace that is offered bim, . AND SANKEY. OBITUARY. PROFESSOR JOHN BUSTEED, M.D. There are many of the substantial citizens of our tity who read yesterday morning the announcement of the death of Dr. John Busteed with grateful recollec- dons of his presence in their homes in hours of sick- tess and suffering, No man more deserves, and per- baps no mun more generally receives, the respect and ufection ot his fellow-citizens than the skilful and bigh- minded physician; and this regard was bestowsd u| Or. Busteed. From the age of tourteen yt hestudied medicine with bis uncle, Dr, Morgan Busteed, and rward attended the London University. After his wal im New York city he attended the Cuiveesiey Medical College from which he graduated in 184: When disease fixed its grasp upon him, and he was obliged, winter alter winter, to remain within doors, the Intense activity of his und Was devoted to the study of microscopy and histology with an enthusiasm which made lim second to no man in the city in these most Interesting branches of his profession. He founded the New York lege of Veterinary Surgeons {of which he was the President) by his own individual efforts and means, {utending that it should become a school ot comparative pathology similar to those of Europe. He bad a broad and gencrous idea of the culture which ought to exist Jn the medical profession, and notwithstanding the Buffering and feebleness of tho past twelvo years he did rougi to further its promotion. Dr. Busteed was a member of various medical societies and associations, both in this country and in Europe, and by all the members of these associations his loss will be most deeply felt and his memory held in aflectionate ro- membrance. DR. TRAUBE, GERMAN PHYSICIAN. A cable telegram from Berlin, under date of the Lith inst., reports the oceurrence of the death ot Dry Traube, a celebrated physician, one of the most emi hent practitioners and instructors in the science of medicine and eT: in the German ati oa NEW “YORK YACHT CLUB. An informal meeting of yacht owners of the New i York Yacht Ciub was held at No, 55 Broad street yesterday afternoon, Commodore Kingsland in the cbair, The members of the House Committee wer also present upon snyitation, Secretary Minton laid before the gentiemen the challenge of Major Charles Gifford, Vice Vommodore of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, to sail for the Queen's Cup, won by the Ainerica in 1851, if the usual six months’ notice is waived. This proposition of the spirited Dominion yachtsman elicited a Jong discussion, but it ia reported that all present were in fuvor of setting aside the tlause in question and giving the new yacht, Countess of Dufferin, the oneal, her owner seeks to win the coveted prize, The question of rassing the annual «dues was also freely discussed by the, gentienen present, but this important matter, together with other subjects ot equal interest, as also that relating to the Queen’s Cup challenge, wili be brought betore a special mecting of the club, which will at once be called for the evening of Thursday, 20th inst., at the fooms, Madison avenue and Twenty.seventh street, DRAMA ATIC N OTE.
