“AN FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Mocks Still Sagging—Lower Prices and the Bears Subila GOLD 112 3-4 A 113 A 12 7 Government Bonds Quiet--Money on Call 3 and 4 Per Cent—Inyestment Securities Lr- regular—Railway and State Bonds Stead. Wane Street, } Tnvrspay, April 6—0 P. ML Tn all respects the market of to-day has been the Counterpart of that of yesterday, and it has moved im favor of a bear inicrest. The upward spert of Tues- day was as evanescent as the bubbles on a glass of dry Billery, and lasted about as long, Nor was there any fteason why it should tast. Tho short interest, which was the only support, taking alarm, quickly advanced prices 1m the process of covering coutracts, and when this ceased the rige coased also. Yesterday and to-day Adairs settied back into their old form, and the pre- railing rotting out dulness again appeared, Pacific Mail and Western Union were chiefly remarka- Ule in this respect, and the reasons adduced were pow- eriul im influence, even if wrong im fact. For instance, im the former stock it was stited that the Panama road had declared war to the kni‘e 1 the shape of an attachment of the Pacific Mail’s property on the Pacilic toast, and a determination to push suits in our local courts for the recevery of moneys lent and proceeds of freight bills collected, but not handed over to com- Plaining compapy. ‘Besides this there were reasons to suppose that, like Tata who desert a sinking sup, there was more than wpe holder of a long line of stock purchased on Gould’s Advice at prices among the thirties who bad become tick of his bargain and had thrown boldings upon the market at the best Ggures they bring. The effect of these reports was to carry the stock down from 18}; to 165, which is the lowest it has ever sold at, and at which price it could be obtained by the shorts (who wore the only buyers) at the close. Western Union, which has been rather inchned to brace up against an otherwise fulling markot, suc- tumbed to-day under reports that the rival Atlantic and Pacific Company contemplated a further reduction | ot rates, and that earnings for the quarter were show. ‘Ing a considerable falling off. There did not appear to be more than the vaguest reasons for cither of these stories, but the stock declined nevertheless, for Iittle cause, perhaps, as for the misiortune of the tri ditional dog who went to the “demnition bow-wows’’ because he had been given a bad name. The St, Paul people, hi played their best trump in the way of an 1. 0. U, dividend, are inclined tu give somebody else a chance, which Is not snapped at with any great avidity, aud consequently both kinds showed lower figures by 3; to 1 per cent than they did at tho opening. Lake Shore remained steady, to the disgust of scalp- i ers, who in the fluctuations of 34 per cent found a slim | chauce tor gain or toss, The Bank of the Stute of New York stockholders met to-day in considerable force, and the result of their ac- tion was to recommend a continuance of the insti- tution on tho reduced basis of $800,000 capital. Mr. “Wm. H. Hays was chosen president, vice Mr. August Belmont, who bad temporarily assumed the position, and every effort was to be made to put the concern on its legs again, The public was favorod with a report of the condition of the bank this moroing, Which shows that out of a capital of $2,000,000 the sum of * $1,221,567 11 has gone where the woodbine twineth, We are sorry for the eleven cents, but would be glad, for stockholders’ sake, it we had auy certamnty that thé hems of “loans and discounts,” ‘real estate,’’ “other estate,” “suspense accognt’’ and “railroad ‘bonds’? would bring in cush any approximation of their schedule value, + Will Mr, Meigs give us an insight into some of the other city banks that are loaded up with suspended papor and generally shaky collaterals, but which publish as fair a statement as did the of the State a month ‘ayo, and let us know what their stock is worth—cheap for cash? The situation of the stock market is the situation of trade generally. Buyers of stocks are as few us are buyers of staples, and it is apparent that the wheels of commerce must be again set going on the upward turn belore either merchants or brokers will Gnd their due. ‘ THE BALRS TO-DAY, The transactions at she Stock Exchange to-day Aggregated 123,800 shares, which were distributed as tolluws:—New York Central and Hadson, 1,415; Erie, 4,600; Lake Shore, 22.400; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 100; Northwestern, 400; do. preferred, 300; Roc Island, 1,750; Pacific Mail, 31,425; St. Paul, 3,750; da preferred, 3,000; Ohios, 2,200; Western Union, 45,010; Wabash, 450; C., C. and 1.
