The Committee on Public Health continued their in- vestigation yesterday morning, They started out at an early hour in order to surprise those districts where. they presumed the most offensive nuisances were to be found, Leaving the Metropolitan Hotel they pro- cceded directly to the Manhattan Market, located at ‘the foot of Thirty-fourth street, Here they met Super- éntendent Gannon, whe conducted them all through ‘the place. The doctors were no more surprised at the size and elegance of the market than they were with ‘the exceedingly cleanly manner in which itia kept. They found the stone floors free irom scrap and dirt and the stands fresh and bright, From the market proper they entered-the slaughter- ing estabishment. He’ Iso, they found nothing to complain of. An animal was killed for them so that they might see how skilfully the blood and offal were disposed of, As soon as the throat of the animat was cut the blood flowed into a large iron pot, which was immediately hurried away to dried ie turned into phosphates, and the offal was at once wheeled off. “Now,’’ said cne ot the doctors, “we are iniormed by Professor Chandler that superphosphates can be made without creating much odor. How is it, Super. intendent ?”” “Weil,”’ answered Mr. Gannon, “Professor Chandler is right; we manufacture our phosphates by means of improved machinery, &c. Come and see.” ‘Thereupon the party passed into the superphosphate works, where they fouva Re! todisturb the eyes or disgust the sense of smell. The whole business was confined within a very small space and very carefully @onducted. ‘I am convinced now,” said Dr, Russell, “that if superphosphate can be manufactured here with suols little stench it can be done also in other places.” “THE SLOUGH OF DESPOND. ‘Thence the party Pies to the toot of Thirt: seventh street, North River, Mr. J. D. Tracy, peut. mun well posted in this section of the city, acting as a guide. Perhaps there i8 no foole ta Newve than this, For a whole block along the river front nothing can be seen but heaps of staking manure. A regular line of carts can be seen coming at every hour o! the day to this particular spot aud dumping their fiith. Pools of dark liquid stand everywhere around, and it was the general opinion of the doctors that it ‘was about as foul and disgusting a piace as they had ever secn It js in the neighborhood of one of the most thickly settled sections of New York, and the fumes arising from it, even at this season of the year, are dreadtul, “What mast it be in Jone and July ’" asked one of the commitieo: ‘for I have learned that these dumps can be seen bere then as well as now.” The place was So exceedingly disagreeable that the party remarned only a littie while, and the president of the commit- toe was exceedingly careful to take full notes upon what he saw. The party then patd a visit to Swift's offal wharf, where they found nothing whatever to complain of, inasmuch as every provision was seen for carr: ryt by ali resuse matter as rapidly as it accu- matates Indeed, upon tie west side of the city, with the exception of the manure dumps mentioned above, Poses re ry found bat little to fdd faalt with. All siaughter houses, tripe cleaning and tallow ren- ‘ering establishments in the neighborhood were ex amined, but all were found to be cleanly and carefully conducted, Several hours were spent in passing through the diferent establishments, alter which the committee returned to their hotel. They leit town Inst evening for Albany, where they will render thoir report to the Assembly, KILLED BY A CART. ——tew Yosterday morving Patrick Downey, fivo years old, of No, 408 East apt third street, was run over and killed in.
