Wart Street, Weosnspay, April 5—6 P, af, ‘The bulls, which raged as furiously last evening as if they possessed the eminent domain ima succession of china shops, turned out to bea short-horned lot Biter all. Commencing at yesterday’s prices the market was fairly steady for the moment, but speedily commenced to yield, and Gnally wound up in the same sickly con- dition that las characterized it for days back. Lake Shore, which was the hend and front of yesterday's rise, opened bravely at 61, but from that point gradu- ally feilof to the closing figure of 69%. Erie, West- ern Union and Pacific Mail followed suit, though in a less important way, and the only trumps in the pack in the hands of the St. Paul fancies, which, afer scoring higher figures at one time, finally closed the game a fraction ahead of the opening. The whole hoist in the market was founded upon in- fimidation, and feeble bears boro the bruntof the attack. Infact, each day’s business is bat the record Of 8 potty struggle between the opposing anvmals, and \he situation continues flatenough until Taurus Maxi- wos or Ursus Major, tired of inactivity, makes a dash At his feeble adversary. So the “spring rise,” which fomo of the hopeful thought they bad discovered in yesterday’s advance, turned out to be little better than @scareon the part of ephemeral shorts, who were driven to cover like Renard when “Tray, Blanche and Sweetheart" are on his trail and the scent lies hot. In & word, the market is a market of hucksters, and deal- Ings are of the most retail description, Meanwhile, the wealthy and powerful operators keep aloof and content themselves with an occasional swoop upon the were | quarry (as did yesterday) with a tremendous scattering j of feathers and a satisfactory securing of prey. So adolescent bears and bulls low and grow! ina youthful fashion and daily fall victims to their insatiate foes, Pacific Mail seems to be thoroughly waterlogged, and sunk down to-day to 18, the lowest figure in its history. No amount of pumping, with all bands at the brakes, seems to be of avail to keep the storm-beaten vesso! afloat, and it appears to be only a question of time when the unfortunate craft will sink utterly out of Bight. Holders of New Jersey Central were notso anxious to keep their grip of their favorite investment, and a goodly lot ot tong stock appeared for sale, with the re- sult of reducing quotations to par ex dividend. The tompany deserves the credit at least of making an ap- parently fair and square exhibit of its condition (albeit a somewhat disappointing one); but stockholders gen- erally will want much stronger reasons before abandon, jng faith in one of the best managed roads in the tountry. Western Union fell off from 68 to 6844, in sympathy with the rest of the market, but did not exhibit any special features, Tho prohibition obtained in Philadel- phia yesterday agaiust a further increase of poles and wires in the public streets may find its imitation in this and other large cities; but so far no eilect has deen produced upon the stock. We have noticed the features of individual active stocks and pass others by as dull and unattractive. In & single sentence we have simply to state that the market opencd full of hopes and closed with disap- pointment.
