FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks Lower, the Market Feverish, More Ae- tive and the Bears Rampant. GOLD 1187-8 A 114. Money on Call Loans Supplied at 2 1-2 and 3 Per Cent—Government Bonds Steady— Investment Securities Quiet— Foreign Exchange Firm. STATISTICS OF OUR FOREIGN TRADE: Watt Starer, } Toxspay, March 28—6 P. M. ‘The hall of the Stock Exchange was to-day converted imto an ‘inquiry room," and the question propounded ‘was, “Where is Conner?’ ‘The solicitude as to the exact whereabouts of the missing broker grew not so much out of a personal in terest in the estray individually as from a* feeling of | sympathy with the Supreme Court, Circuit, Judge Bare rett presiding, where Mr, Conner is ‘“wanted’— wanted ag a witness in one of the Black Friday suits im which Dewitt C, Taylor 1s plaintiff and Jay Gould | the defendant. Mr. Conner baving filled the position of confidential clerk with the firm of Fisk & Belden on bat sad and nigrescent day, and since the imoroglio with Osborn & Millis having been the chief broker of Jay Gould himself, either knows too much or too little, From a Gould point of view, his, room is esteemed better than his company, though the Supreme Court doesn’t think so, and urgently desires his society, as a pocketful of subpmnas bear witness, To-day Mr, Couner has a maximum of name anda minimum of tocal habitation, and while the court offi- ters thus find the situation, they fail to find Mr, Conner. member of so highly honorable a body of men as the 3tock Exchange would atvempt to thwart justice by Acliberately absenting himself from the jurisdiction uf | its courts; hence, his failire to appear must Be ac- counted for in some other manner. Can it be possible that he has fallen a victim to the same sort of con- spiracy which his employés so providentially escaped ? Was there no ‘‘Jaky’”’ at hand to avert the evi! frst and present a claim for service a(terward on the testi- mony of gag and bowstring?’ Have the police ques- tioned Uncle Daniel and the Young Operator, and asked them what they know about kidnapping? Is Mr. Conner the victfn of foul play, and has there been 4p imitation of the sack and the Bosphorus? There is no doubt about the toul play, in a serious point of view, and Gould’s defence in the courts yes- terday, where for a second time he sought to escape fulfilment of his contracts by pleading the Gambling act, was ‘foul as Vulcan’s stithy.”” Yet this man controls the market, engages m huge contracts, through his agents, to buy and sell stocks, gathers in thousands of dollars on sales of * privi- leges’’ based on nothing stronger than nis word of— we had nearly written “honor’’—word of mouth, and seeks to cheat his creditors by pleading the act against gambling and betting and by the artifice of spiriting away an inconvenient witness. All this has little to do with to-day’s stock market per se, but it is vastly im- portant in its bearings upon the business of stock speculation generally, since it spreads over it a cloud of obloquy that drives old operators from the street and hinders new ones from venturing in, Prices were all off to-day. The budding of spring has Proved an autumn of hopes, Trade has not looked up, 4s Was anticipated, Railroad reports are regarded as uncertain indica- tions as to any favorable turnin the tide, The April settlements are viewed with apprehension, and a feel- ing of distrustas to any immediate improvement in | values is plainly apparent. Under these circumstances the share list stumped off materially, the fall being par- ticularly noticeable in Lake Shore and Michigan Cen- tral. Both of these roads are thought to be doing dadly—the first through popular report, the second by . confession of figures. The Commodore is supposed to be out of his Lake Bhore stock already, and will probably get out of the Presidency as well atthe next election. Meanwhile the Robinson party, sick of the burden they have to carry and seeing no favorable outlet for their holdings, are sprinkling the street with stock as opportunities offer. The decline created a more active market than we ve had for a few days past, as was natural with the ‘argo short interest existing, and for the Jast hour or 40 prices improved somewbaj, but with no feature that betokened a permanent change for the better. A reference to the official list will afford desired in- formation as to amount of transactions and extent of the day’s fuctuations. THE SALES TO-DAY.
