* NEW YORK HERALD, SUNDAY, MARCH 26, 1876 QUADRUPLE SHEET. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL —_—-—-——- The Stock Market Still Unsettled and Some of the Fancies Lower, THE BANK STATEMENT. Money 3 and 4 Per Cent on Call~-Governments and Investment Securities Quiet— Foreign Exchange Steady. COLD DECLINED FROM 14 8-8 TO 14, Wat Srreer, } Sarcrpar, March 25—6 B, M. In the good old times, when savans hunted for the jhilosopher’s stone, alchemists essayed the transmu- ‘ation of base metal into virgin gold and the astrologer sast the horoscope which should predict either good or evil fortune, such a day as this, with its conjunction of dulness, downpour and eclipse would. bave fore- shadowed great events, If members of the Board, as modern soothsayers, have drawn auguries from finan- cial facts as exhibited jn the course of business to-day the evidence shows them to be unfavorable, There is something amiss with the stirs, the planets are hostile, or some one of the ‘twelve houses’’ may be ‘to let.”" Whether the influence be celestial or mundane, one thing is sure, there is something wrong with the mar- ket. And this was eariy exhibited in the perturba- tions of Lake Shore, which, however, manifested them- selves nearly altogether one way, and that in the direction of lower prices, Opening at 6334, it faded jay gradually, like a person in a decline, though ex- bibiting occasional spells of convalescence, and closing apatély. This was doing about as badly as it could do under the circumstances of moderate transactions and absence of any bear attack, and can only be ac- eounted for by the reports of further reduction in rates for freight between Chicago and New York and the despondency of the bulis, who find their bopes of a great spring rise day by day more and more illusive. Erie divided with Lake Shore the attention of specu- laters, aud sympathizing with gach other on the idea, probably, that misery loves company {ell off fraction oy fraction with its companion, There seemed to be as little cause for the weakness in Erie as there was tor shat of Lake Shore; for, on the turn and turn about prineiple, to-day should have been the occasion for a revival of the third rail story, vice the coupon romance laid over until next week; bat the situation was left unchanged, and operators were disappointed accordingly. From 21% to 20%, which were tho Alpha and Omega of fluctuations, tho stock seemed to drop ot its own weight or from such pressure as a waning behef in the cock-and-bull stories of the week lent assistance to, Michigan Central wag the third and only remaining road security that attracted any public attention, its condition was but little better than its brethren, foclining, as it did, from 637%, the highest point, to 3244 atthe close, It completed the triad of the un- aappy family. The Twenty-third street party are full of venom as regards this stock, and their fearfal prognostications as to its future fate should make every hair on a bull’s coat ‘‘stand on end like quills ‘apon the fretful porcupine.” Western Union scarcely budged from 68 and bore itself as calmly through the day as though there were bo Atlantic and Pacific rival in existence and no Fate with threatening shears to cut down rates any more. Pacific Mail, as a sort of amphibious and maritime fraud, naturally despised wind and weather and was not scared by the war of the elements which raged without, as the railroad fancies were, Consequently it not only held its own bravely, but even at one time advanced to 21}, or 4% per cent above its opening price. Ultimately it felt tho depression of the rest of the market, and finished @ {fraction better than it had commenced, The remainder of the list was featureless, and to commission brokers the class of business was the finish ton unsatisfactory week. THE SALES TO-DAY aggregated 145,000 shares, which were divided among active stocks as followe:—Pacific Mail, 6,000; St. Paul, 4,200; do. preferred, 1,900; Ohios, 1,600; , Western Union, 9,150; Wabash, 200; Union Pacific, 625; C., C. and L C., 2,400; Michigan Central, 7,595; Missouri Pacific, 1,000.
