FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks a Trifle Firmer—Prices Quite Irregular. GOLD 114 5-8 A114 1-2. Government and Invest- ment Bonds Steady. Money on Call 3a 3 1-2 Per Cent— Foreign Exchange Quiet. Wau Street, } Tavaspay, March 9—6 P. At the very opening strong parties took nold of the Lake Shore speculation for the bull account and steadily carried the stock up from 64% to 654g. From this the highest point shares sagged back to 64% and closed at 65; 80 a small advance can be credited to the bulls on the average of fluctuations for the day, As nothing had occurrea while brokers slept to make the stock moro valuable to-day than It was yesterday it was difli- cult to trace the advance to any other influence than such as grew out of a report of increased earnings for the month of February and a disposition to copper the points of the Commodore, who, it is stated, is mys- terious and confidentially warning his iriends not to buy, All Stock Exchange men know that to doubt the Jolly vld waterman is to “doubt Truth to be a liar,” aud those who act upon So mendacious @ supposition de- serve tobe tarred and feathered. ‘There was a good deal of hfe still apparent in Western Union, despite of the kicks and cuffs it bas been sub- jected to lately, and, assisted by the sprightliness of its side partner, Lake Shore, appeared in quite a cheertul form, rising, as it did, from 6814 to 69, However, the success of the concern did not last long, and the copartnership speedily got into a very shaky position when the weaker member of the firm found itself quoted at 674%, the lowest point which it gas touched in the recent devline, As we apprehended in our last, considerable long stock held by disappointed and disgusted investors found its way into the Board for salo, and the depres- tion thus created was taken advantage of by Gould to wpply a further line of shorts and to hammer the market with sixty day options at aconcession of 3¢ per cent below the regular price. It may be added shat this sixty day business was also essayed in Lake Bhore, and, though sales were few, the moral effect was damaging enough, as buils have @ constitutional horror of sixty day contracts, and an option of this tort is as obnoxious to them as is @ red rag to their brethren of the flelds, While Plutus (which the type-setter is at liberty to speil Pluto as a convertible term) was pulling down the fabric of Western Union with his red right hund he ‘was endeavoring to lift up Union Pacific with his let but whether he be wanting in briels, or whether the load be too beavy for any single man to manage, the result was that the stock advanced from 6910 70 on sales of 800 shares, and fell back to 8 on the next 200, In spite of the rose-colored report published this morning, and the statement that a dividend had been declared (always @ mysterious matter with this com- pany), which was announced io a stage whisper during the day, and which may be true or false, dealers refuse to be attracted toward it, The spider seductively lures im honeyed tones, but the fly is a dragon fly of virtue, ‘snd looks upon the insect as —— & monster of so frightful m! As to be hated needs but to be seen apd will have nothing to do with him accordingly. Ohio and Mississippi had ove of its periodical spasms: {a-day, and it took the form of epilepsy, or, as it was cafied in old times, “the falling sickness,” and the violence of the paroxysms may be noted in its tumbie from 2144 to 203g, though 1t convalesced half a point at the close. The only other stock worthy of attention | was Erie, which remained dull aud steady ut 18, though the Twenty-third street party are short at lower figures, | having been circumvented in their designs for a tall by the wise man of William street, THE SALES TO-DAY, The transactions on the Stock Exchange to-day gregate 176,000 shares, which wore distributed as iol- lows:—New York Central and Hudson, 810; Erie, 3,800; uake Shore, 67,390; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 7: Northwestern, 1,200; do. preferred, 900; Rock Island, 800; Pacitlc Mail, 19,750; St. Paul, 3,700; do, preterred, 645; Obios, 7,600; Western Union, 49,200; Wabush, 300; Unjon Pacific, 1,475; Michigan Central, 7,500; Missouri Pacitic, 2,860.
