BELL’S REPLY. HIS APPEAL TO THE PUBLIC—AN ALIBI PROVEN AND INCONSISTENCIRS POINTED OUT. The following letter missive to the public has been issued by Rey. Fred, Bell in answer to the allegations of immoral practices as made against him by Mrs. Mary L. Morris, a member of the Park avenue Metho- dist church, in Brooklyn:— To tre Pustic: — It is with feclings of regret that I address this com- munication to you, but $s ol it my duty under the cir- cumstances to expose e accusation made by Mrs. Mary L. Morris aaecting my character as a Chris- tian minister. I have hitherto received a genero support at your hands, and it is due to you, to myself and to the cause in which I ame dt should know that I have done nothing to forfoit your coniidence or bring reproach upon the causo of re- ligion. Aud it is for the purpose of showing that this | charge is utterly false and has been “trumped up,” and was sought to bo used to induce me to remain in a church I had determized to loave that I write this let- tor. Tho charge against me ts on the Zist day of Ae 1875, I adreased improper language to Mrs. jorris, snd repeated it on the 29th of the same month. | ‘This charge I solemnly declare to be utterly false in | evory particalar. 1 never in my life addressed to ber | an improper word or gave her an im| look, nor Seal ever during my intercourse with her ‘commit act unbecoming a Christian minister, bg fetes acquainted with William G. Morris and his wife at the Park avenue church, which they attended, and after he professed religion and jommed the church I took an interest in his weltare and tried to induce Lis wife to jofm him in the cause of religion. I called at his house, as I was in the habit of calling at others, [ supposed he was sincere, as he seomed to take an iu- tenes in the church, and expressed great desire that his wife should also'be brought to Christ. I laborod to that end, and until this faise and wicked charge was made against me I had no reason to doubt his sincerity or the integrity of his wife. But I now find, to my reat regret, that as to both | have been mistaken. I fave ‘sscsrtained that notwithstanding his professed conversion he is profane in his language, and that sho is unworthy of belief and of bad repute. I make this | statement upon undoubted evidence and witkqut hes: tation, knowing full well the legal consequences to my- self if I um not able to establish the truth of what L here assert. AND I CHALLENG® TITEM, backed up as they haye been by Daisley, Stokum and ‘Taylor, to give me the opportunity before a legal tri- bunal of establishing the absolute truth of what I now state, Itis not necessary to my present purpose nor do | intend at (his time to give in detail the evidence I | have in my possession, but to refer to so much of it | only as may bo necessary to my full vindication. I | seck not to attack others but to A oomecgte' self, and | if misfortu thereby comes to any Cee can- | not say “I did it, % When this false "gc | was first made I at once requested and . p mrcoces ty that | the trustees of the Park avenue church sheuld imime- | They undertook in- formally to do so, and waited upon Mrs. Morris and heard ber statement. Her statement was so contra. dictory that they expressed their disbelief in the truth | of her story and exonorated me. I have before stated, and now repeat that at that interview she fixed the date of the alleged offence as of the 9th day o! April, 1875, positively and circumstantially, stating thal Carson and her Sister were in the house at the time heard | my voice, and that Carson mado a memorandum belind the door and in his diary of the occurrence, and sho, therefore, could not be mistaken as to the date. At | that time Mr, Daisiey reminded me ot the fact that on | tho 9th day of April | was attending a conference in Pennsylvania, and could not, theretore, have been at her house ou that day. Finding that I was absent , from the city on that day she now states as positively | that it was on the 2lst day of April that 1t occurred; and to fix that as the date beyond all doubt she duces the same circumstance in corroboration that she did in her statement as to the 9th, to wi “A triend was in the kitchen who asked te what was the matter?” She could not be mistaken as to its | | being the 9th, because a friend was there, asked her | what was the matter and noted it down, She can- not to be mistaken as to the 2ls$, because “a friend was in the kitchen who asked me what was tho mat- ter’? Now, I have no doubt that when she and her backers find out (as they will wheo they read thislet- dor) that her last statement is as false as was her Grst, they will withdraw the 21st and substitute another tate with the same facility that the 9th was withdrawn and the 2lst inserted. Such an act would be in perfect barmony with the course hitherto pursued, and ber statement would be ly as true of any other date as it was of the 9thor now 18 of the 2ist. r. Daisloy, absolute trath, and it Was be who first called my at- | tention to the fact that 1 was absent on the 9th, And now as to the 2ist, which is the date fixed positively | alleged offence. Itso hi ned that I spent the entire day of April 21, 1875, m the company ot Mr. George W. Johnson, of Shenandoah, Pa,, than whom no man in | that community stands higher in public esteem. When Mr. Johnson saw the publication of this false charge he wrote me a letter calling my attention to the occur- rencos of the 2ist, stating that, “as far us the chargo upon the 2ist is concerned 1, positively, from my diary, | know it to be false.” I then wrote to Mr. Johnson re- | ing him to send me, under oath, ement of what he knew of my waereabouts on that day, which he did, as follows:— MR. JOMNSON'S LETTRR. Susxanvoan, Feb. 16, 1876, Rey. Indeed, I am informed that 8 present at the time ade it says that sho mado it with great PUM eat unter the strong pressure of those who have manifested such ma- liguity toward me in this matter, The trouble is, the falsehold is told w¥h too much di and tails to piecos of its own welgbt, Bat it seems to have oc- curred to some one that it would not do TO CLOSK THE NARRATIVE without entering a protest against my insults to her, 80 she says that when | again tis visited her ou the 29th, and renewed the conversation, she said, “Mr. Bell, [do not want you to darkon my doors again." ais is quite positive enough if it had been earlier in the nar- Tative, and had not been qualified by adding ‘anloss my husband is at home.” Can any one conceive of a woman insulted as she claims to have been, forbidding the person thus insulting her the house, and then cor emt adaing, “unless iy husband is at home.” Jnworthy and untruthful as this woman shown herself to be, she has my pity but the men who have mdaced her to place herseif in her present position are doserving only of contempt. I have said before, and bers repeat, that 1 had been exonerated trom this pore e, aud everything was satisfactory until I notified the jurch of my purpose to leave, and then this false charge was held in terrorem over my head. “Another fact will iilustrate the falsity of this charge, No woman having been insulted as she claims to have been by me could ever have any regard for mo thereafter; yet, when [ left for Europe, more than a month after: ward, she aud her husband very kindly presented mo with a packago of canned fruits, &c., to use on my voy- age, and she was very earncst tn the oxpression of ber regret at my departure. In clos! is have only to say that ap regret the necessity that has impelled me to make this statement, but tL nave felt it due to you, to myself and the cause in which we aro allso vitally interested that I should say this much, And now I declare to you that the charge made against me {s false in every particular, and that T e done nothing to forfeit your confidence or to bring reproach on the cause of religion, 1am your obedient servant.
