Fora first class variety show commend us to the Principal performing stocks of to-day’s market, The stars of the hour were Western Union and Lake Shore, while, with the exception of two or three others (ot which a word farther on), the rest of the list may be missea as a mere crowd of supernumerarics. The prices prevailing last niyht were the opening ones this morning; but it became soon apparent that the Robinson-Osborn faction were important sellers of the two favorites. Some 6,000 shares of Western Union were quickly thrown upon the market, and half as many more of Lake Shore, with the effect of breaking down the former from 73 to 71%, and the latter from 643, to 6234. It seemed like being suddeniy sick of one’s bar- gain, produced by a severe case of the cramps, per- aps, for the bargain was only made yester- day and at the time the stock was purchased. This action on the part of the Robinson-Osborn com- bination helped the conundrum guessers, to whom we alluded yesterday, amazingly, and (Ley are all ready to return their answers (0-day to the effect that the Lake Shoresold by Messrs, Davie & Freeman was bona fide Jong siock afver all On whose account these sales ‘were made is not so clear, though the fact that this ‘firm wasa lender of money w-duy to a prodigious ‘amount seems to point to the probability that the Com- moedore has tewer stocks than greenbacks in bis troker’s hands at present. On ‘he otner side it is re- ported that a large advance made by the Commodore to the bull cliques sixty days since on pledge of active ~glocks as collaterals has failen due and that the Ancient Mariner, wanting to see the color of bis money onte again, had refused to renew the loan, The Gould peo- pio, not being in particular good odor with money londers, are supposed to have tossed their stocks upon the market and thus supplied themselves with cash, Whichever of these theories be true, if either be so, Ut ts certain that Messrs. Davis & Freeman bad money pnough to lend to-day to keep the wolf from the door of every Stock Exchange member for many mouths to tome. Although this changing about créated seemingly an extonsive business, at no time for a long period has the market been so entirely a broker’s market as it has been to-day. Its very feverishuess and uncertainty were the means of deterring the small outside oper- Btors from taking a bend, and consequently dealings were confined strictly (o protessionals, who appre- ciated the existence of a torced activity without in the feast understanding the cause of so much thimblerig- ging. Possibly the object may be detected in one of the theories which we have sugg sted.
