A TRAVELLER'S VISIT TO A NORTH CAROLINA JAIL—A HORRIBLE CONFINEMENT. To run Eprror or Tux Henatp:— Thave heard that an article appeared some time ago in one of the New York papers, headed ‘“‘Man’s inhu- manity to Man.”’ On this same subject! propose to write, for the purpose of laying before'the public a few facts that should awaken sympathy in the hearts of the most hardened and callous of men, In the jail of Smithville, N. ©., are two crazy men who bave been in the closest confinement for the past two years, suffer- ing daily for the want of pure air and proper nourish- ment, These men, I am told, are kept in the jail for jack of a better place of confinement, There baye been repeated requisitions made by the County Commissioners to Dr, Grissom, im charge of the State asylum, with a view to: having the unfortunates removed to more comfortable quarters, but the asylum is so crowded that there is not room for any additional cases, Having occasion to visit Smith- ville a very short time ago my curiosity led me to the Jail at about the hour that the prisoners get their break- fast; but I was a little late, and did not see of what their breakfast consisted or its quantity, I met the Jailer at the door with a bucket, He told me to go in, and up on the second floor I would see the two men; that he ja the meantime would get them some water. 1 walked in and mounted the narrow stair that led to a small room. When I bad gone a few steps the nauseat- ing smeil that 1 encountered-would have driven me back had I Lot become doubly curious to seo it was. really possible for a "auman being to ode so atmosphere, T dnish live in oh Naci my to my o Bio ast tye found myself in a room wi holes, about the size of a man’s head, both ways with rods of iron, dows, and on either side of this smail room, opposite each other, were two still simalier cages, and in each cage was aman, Yes, oue of God's creatures, and not a wild beast, as I should have believed if I had not been told “‘that on the second floor you will dnd the twomen.’’ My heart sickened at the signt Jn the e nearest where I stood I saw the im light a form, on all foars crawling, a8 Ll have olten seen a restiess panther, from side to side. I stepp da litue nearor aud discovered the emaciated features of a man, whose long tangled hair bung in bunches amt “ face and shoulders. J addressed a few remarks to hi and his replies proved his Susanity beyond a doubt. t moved over to the ower Cage expecting to meet with a similar scene, but was surprised to tind a man, wan | presided, Mr, | Mayor, Surrogate pl a | twelve citizens, and worn and jelancboly, squatting where the light came in most before a smail bundle that I judged to be his bed, picking the vermin from bis ragged clothes. I asked him several questions, but bmi made no reply to them at first. I then moved ny here I coula watch his face and “Luets, J for the that is his name, ‘if you have oue parti of sense lett answer my ques- tions, because 1 am anxious todo something for you.” He immediately turned his head a my gaze, and ever betore have I seen ie ie ing @Xpression as his countenance wore, H won el his long, lean aro in my direction until boy fingers rested on the lattice work of his ‘ir, wt he stammered has- tily, “Weil, sir—well, sir, 1 uestions and will be glad if you can hel me.” He told me that he was very cold, and in truth, it wana bitter day, I ed him if he got onough to’ eat? He replied that sometimes he got |, but not always. He was wdasked me to explain the cause of what ‘his ponishment, Now, to me this man did pot seom crazy; his answers to my many questions were perfectly rational, and be does net require such close confinement. I beg that the Wilmington phpers make a note of this to show the people of Brunswick county what suffering is going on in their midst, and how, by a vory litt attenti much of it will be pre- vented. This interference may seem Pape umption in one who is a comparative stranger in those parts, bat the real distress that 1 found in these men made a deep impression upon me, and I feel that it behooves us all as Christian people to do a in our power to re- = 5 lieve our suffering w men, avd | bie y hope that this matter will receive immediate attention. A TRAVELLER. OBSEQUIES OF CAPTAIN A. H. H, ECCLES AND BETWEEN THIRTY AND FORTY THOUSAND DOLLARS MISSING, ¥. H. Eccles became a member of the Stock Er change just after the panic im 1813 He also joined the Gold Exchange about that time, Last fall he went to Canada to spend a fow weeks, and durmg his absence his clerk absconded with a considerable amount of money, The affair created a deal of scandal at the ~ time among Wall street men and Eccles-was spoken of in anything but complimentary terms, many alleging that he was not altogether ignorant of the method adopted by his confidential servant in wetting away with other people’s money, This, however, is a thing of the past, and since Mr. Eccles has again become “involved,” (t is only neces- sary to speak of more recent transactions, About the 1st of January last two banks in Wheeling, 'W. Va, authorized Mr, Eeeles to purchase, here im New York, for Chem government bonds to the value of between $30,000 and $40,000, In the course of a few days Mr. Eccles notified the Wheeling parties that he had made the purchase, and asked for instructions. me letter came instructing him to sell the bonds again and deposit the proceeds of the sale to their credit with the Fourth National Bank of New York, Supposing that Eccles would of course follow his instructions the Wheeling partes let the matter drop for a while, taking it for granted that oe snug little sum of from 1,000 to (the exact amount has not yet been made known), wag on deposit to their credit at the Fourth ‘National, Finally, however, they began to grow somewbat un- easy, as the Fourth National Bank had not Kes tg them of any deposit. They wrote to President houn, of that institution, in reference to the Satie and that gentleman answered to the effect that he , knew nothing of F. H. Eccles, and that no money bad been deposited by him in the Fourth National Bank, This letter brought the Wheeling parties at re New York, arriving here last sey. for Eecles was promptly — institu at Sie out avail, as P egiyocon not be found, inquiry at the St. Nicholas Hotel where bo had been stopping, revealed the fact that he rad left there very hurriediy the day previous with his family. He was seeu on the street on Friday morning, at which time he stated that 9 had sold his seat in the Stock Exchange and pro wf ocr Europe, but tho: he would visit California before leaving for the other side. F. H. Eccles is very respectably connected. The family into which be married is said to be exceedingly wealthy, and his father-in-law, who is highly respected in all circie: eatly annoyed by his son-in-law's re- cent transaction, THE NANUET MURDER, RESENTENCE OF MICHARL MURPHY BY THE SUPREME COURT, GENERAL TERM—A SISTER'S DEVOTION TO THE CONDEMNED. Michael Murphy, convicted of the murder of Mrs. Houjus at Nanuet, Rockland county, on the night of thé. 19th of April, 1873, was brought before the Supreme Court, General Term, in Brooklyn, yesterday, to be sentenced for the thirdtime., The new District Attorney of Rockland county, M. M. Dickinson, made the motion for resentence. Mr. Henry Daily, Jr., the prisoner's counsel, made application to have the day for the ex- ecution deferred as far possible to enable him to make “application to the Governor for a pardon or commutation of sentence upon petitions signed by the citizens of Rockland county and upon newly dis- _ covered evidence, Mr, Justice Barnard, before pro- ceeding to sentence, asked Murphy if he had avything tosay, Murphy said he had, and in a clear, calm tone stated that he was at his home in Jersey City on the night of the murder; that he knew nothing whatever about the occurrence; that he had never intended, designed or thought of doing the deceased any injury or wrong, and that if executed for her murder he would die an innocent man, Justice Barnard then sentenced him to be hanged on the 7th of “April next, at New City, Rockland county, “Murp! hy was subsequently removed from the court bs the Sheriff of Rockland county to the office of the Sheriff of Kings county, where his friends were allowed to see him and oxpress their sympathy. During tho sentence the court room was densely crowded, and the impression created by the rg nn of the prisoner and his statement was that he was not guilty. The prisoner is a young man of good appearance and un- married. He was born in Ireland, but came to this country while quite young, and up to the time of the murder of Mrs Hujus his character was that of an in- dustrious, well-couducted citizen. He has brothers and wisters living in Jersey, and one of the latter is a Sister of Charity connected with one of the houses of that Order in New Jersey. When Murphy wi ed and priate for the second time this sister asked the sagen eg her house to grant her the privi- or of the defence of her brother and saving him fron $0 ominous death, Her request was re- information vitally im- portant to the prisoner. But when Murphy’s re- Sentence was affirmed by the Court of Appeals, good sister hesitated no longer and determined to go to the rescue of her brother atany cost, She was threatened with expulsion if she sisted, but Archbishop Bayley on being informed of the situation granted the desired permission. The best advocate, therefore, that poor Murphy now has, noxt to his de- Voted counsel, ig his sister, who is working in his be- halt night aud aay. Itis said that she has prevailed upon the jary before whom Murphy was first tried, one of the chief witnesses against him andthe citr- zens generally of Rockland county, to unite in a peti- tion (o Governor Tilden to either pardon her or to commute his sentence to imprisonment for hfe. Her hopes of success are very strong, mainly because of the circumstantial character aud weakness of the evidence against the prisoner. THE DEER PARK TRAGEDY.
