THE CROWDED OARS. “A DAILY victim's” IDEA. fo Tus Eviror ov tas Hekann: Tam glad to see by your paper for the past few Gays that it is proposed to “declare war’ against | the horse car railroad companies of New York, and | by so doing to compel those companies to fully re- gard the comfort and convenicnce of their patrons. I, for one, am somewhat surprised that the nuisance of “erowded’’ (not overcrowded) cars has not been apated many years ago, and 1 have been one of its suf- erers for nearly twenty years. 1 notice also by your paper that some suggestions are thrown out by different persons as a remedy. Allow me to add one on this subject. It is this:—That the pro- tors of carriages, cabs, &c., should place a suf- eer sassnar 4s Cisee vabiclan at diterenispomes | throughout the city for the accommodation of ces to be distinguished from the iages dutace sign. Let the fare be five | cents for the same distance as charged by the horse car companies, the fares to be in all re- | the same. ess ‘oo cabs are full let the | river take down his sign, and as vacancies occur let | him put it up again. There are plenty of these cabs for thts purpose, every one in them will be seated, and, besides this, “There is money in it.”’ However, until some radical change is effected, I hope, Mr. Editor, You will continue to give this public enemy, these grasping corporations, broadside after droadside {rom the ever watebiul batteries of the Henan day by day. Hoping that you consider this note worthy ot space in your columns, Iam, yours respectfully, ‘A DAILY VICTIM. A CONDUCTOR’s VIEW. To Tun Eorron or tar Harano:— Your paper seems to be the ouly one agitating the overcrowding of the strect cars. Ihave no doubt the | public will applaud your warfare upon the man- agers until finally they will all have a seat, but I doubt tt. Men who control newspapers gencrally un- | derstand their occupation thoroughly, but place any one of them in cbarge of a railroad and he would be convinced in three days of the impracticability of com- lying with the wishes of passengers in every mstance. Woar warfare upon railroads fs injadicious, totally | | NEW YORK TERALD, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY Il, 1876—W1TH SUPPLEMENT. FINANGLAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks Irregular and Speculators Undecided — “A Dull Day—Prices on Edge. GOLD QUIET AT 112 7-8. The Money Market Easy at 31-2 and 4 Per Cent—The Coal Railroad Securities Lower—Government Seca- Tities Steady. Wat Srreer, Tacrspay, Feb. 10—6 P. M. “Story! God bless you! Lhaye none to tell, sir,’ said George Canning’s knife grinder some hundred years ago. His answer is equally applicable to the story of to-day’s stock market. There fs little or no story to tell. The drone of a Scotch bagpipe (except for the last hour or so) would express the history of the day’s work were the latter set tomusic. A duluess born of hesitation and doubt as to what was likely to be the next move by the great chess players of the street prevailed among large and small traders alike, Even the babes and sucklings who were supposed to emit words of wisdom in the Psalmist’s time would have been looked upon doubtingly had they ventured to utter points to the incredulous crowd of brokers. Opznions were as mixed as an international commis- sion, and had the ancient doctrine of a transmigration of souls been the creed of the day neither bull nor bear would have cared under which shape he appeared inthe market. ‘Thus, with no particular leaning eitner way, but with a very decided inclination to wait for something, Micawber-like, to turn up, neither party showed much eagerness to trade. ‘The St. Paul stocks, taking the day through, were the steadiest as well as the strongest on the list, and this for the reasons we mentioned yesterday. There was a fractional setback at one time, but the decided | rally in Lake Shore quickly imparted new cheer(ulness to the shares, and the closing quotations were equal to the best of the day. The goneral lagging market, which was wearing away the patience of brokers, as well as the leaden-footed hours—hours which did not shine enough to be “improved” by the most daring of | scalpers—broke away from its lethargy Inte in tho day, | | and the whole share list participated in the waking up. Lake Shore still proves itself the power of the Stock Exchange. Its weakness yesterday was as infectious | asan epidemic, and its rebound to-day carried the | market along with it_as does a band of street music our brethren of African descent. Basing their action upon unfavorable reports of the business of the road and a suspicion that the Robinson-Osborn combination was held together by very slender threads, the bears had late in the day and at lowest quotations put out a very considerable line of shorts, Instead of taking a surge downward this morning, as sellers expected, the stock opened at the closing price of last evining and slowly, but steadily, worked its way upward. The situation was a disappointing one for the bears, and became decidedly unpleasant when a broker known to operate for the Twenty-third street party came with a large order to purchase, Bruin quickly came to the conclusion that | he had been treed, and his eiforts to get into safe quar- ters spéedily carried the fancy to the figure of 663%, which was nearly one and one-half points above the opening price. ‘This episode of Lake Shore was the only redecming trait of an otherwise dall market. For the time being it resuscitated the drooping list and caused it to close Strong and with rather a buoyant feeling. It is very dificult to prognosticate anything of the futare, andthe wisest heads in tho street confess themselves non- plussed at the present medioy.
