GOLD IRREGULAR AT 131-8 A US 1-4 A US Railway Bonds Steady—Money on Call Loans 5, 6 and 4 Per Cent. Wat Sraner, Wrowespar, Feb. 2—6 P. M. Phe march of the Stock Exchange on its pilgrimage to the Mecca of higher prices has halted again to-day. “Whether stock jobbing pilgrims by reason of acquiring @ superabundant number of shares have found them act like peas in the shoes of crusading devotees, or whether the halt has simply been called as a rest previous to a new and more formidable departure, cothing events will show, Whatever evil occurred to- day to either bull or bear.was undoubtedly sufficient to the parties interested, but it could not have been very ‘| serious, since chances for loss or gain were limited and dealings, in comparison with those of two or three days ago, were on a reduced scale, Pacific Mail was unquestionably The cynosure of neighboring eyes, and attracted the largest crowd of admirers. There ‘was a strong disposition on the part of somebody to ‘market stock, and in the effort to do so the price broke down one per cent from the opening and closed at the decline, There wasa great discrepancy in opinion as as the hues of’ a kaleidoscope or the contents of a jar of mixed pickles. Many of the opinions expressed were quite as acid too, for the small dealers had been looking for an upward whirl in the stock onin formation quietly whispered and not to be breathed to a soul It was disappointing, then, to see its value the dumping process aforesaid, and coubly disagreeable to have to pay the piper. Tho weight of evidence seemed to point to Jay Gould asthe disturber of peace and happiness, and the reason for his action was said to be some complication in the Panama Pacific Mail jumble, which was to result to tho disadvantage of the latter company, In fact a promi_ nent operator, who is supposed to be behind the gothim."? This obscure but fearful assertion, launched against # mythical individual, came near throwing hold- ers into fits. - Western Union was less sought after, and oscillated ‘Detween 78% and 77%. The stories on which it was so Strenuousiy builed at the beginning of the week—to the effect that the company’s shares wore to bo divided ‘among stockholders, that a consolidation with therival Atlantic and Pacific hne was imminent, and others of | that ilk—were treated as old wives’ tales that had been told once too often. The Western stocks were oxceptionally strong, and dn the cases of the preferred shares ot Northwest and St. Paul closing prices were decidedly better than the ‘opening, as will be seen by reference to the printed list, Ohio and Mississippi was nearly deserted. Whether its friends are off to Montreal, with samples procured in the late activity, or whether the quotation of 24 ts ail that can be got out of it at present fn the upward hitch is a question that must be answered shortly. ‘The appointment of Mr, Allan Campbell to the post of iasioner of Public Works scems (o threaten a ‘Dreeze in the usually placid precincts of the Consolida- tion Coal Company. A circular, signed by several prominent stockholders, has been issued asking for proxies in the interostof Mr. Campbell, who is now ‘and bas been for four years back the president of the company. For the information of investors we cull out a few figures. Tho net earnings for the first two years of the consolidation averaged $222,000 for each year; for the last four years they have averaged $400,000. During this latter period all floating debt has deen expunged and the funded debt reduced $346,000. ‘The signers of the circular point to these items as cogent reasons why Mr. Oampbell should be retained in -office despite the opposition of some shareholders who codject to his holding a dual position, The argument of the Ggures is at least a strong one. Apropos to this subject of coal and ite consumers, ‘word comes to us across the river that our neighbors -of Brooklyn are in open rebellion against the extortion -of the gas companies. There is nobody to throw oll upon these waters of discord, for the oleaginous fluid is poured into the lamps to the exclusion of the meter. That the complamt of consumers at the excessive charges of the companies is well founded is shown in the fac} that while prices of gas remains as they were the material trom’ which it is produced has fallen de- cidedly im value. Gas coal, which two years ago was _delivered under ‘contract for the season at $7 50 per toy, 18 now supplied to gas companies at $6 per ton. At seems about time that the consumers should realize owe benefit from this reduction, THR SALES TO-DAY.
