FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Stocks Strong—A More Active Outside Demand. GOLD STEADY AT 1138. If antiquarians grubbing in the débris left by nations past and gone chance upon some curious fabric or Qnique piece of pottery strange to our epoch, and which our artisans fail to imitate, we regret that the beautifyl art that devised them bas perished with the past, We mourn over the lost arts, and in doing so forget those which we haye discovered to replace them. Fancy an ancient Roman at his breakfast with a quad- tuple sheet like the. Sunday Heraxp at his elbow ora railroad train at his command to whisk oysters from Britain and peacocks from Gaul into his larder, and then confess that ‘-Civis Romanus,” with all his lost arts, could have been a much more comfortable indi- vidual under the circumstances we have imagined than he was in reality. Possibly, the most important of the arts which have been born of the nineteenth century is the art of advertising. It is boundless in its scope and sufficiently easy of acquirement to be employed by Bridget in the kitchen or by a magnate of finance, At wil call attention tothe purloining of a pug or to the stimulation of stocks, and it is under this latter view that we have been attracted to its value, ‘ The Gould-Osborn-Mills combination having saddled themselves with a stock in trade of which Lake Shore was a specialty, and finding expenses heavy and customers few, have within a day or two gone into. the advertising business with a great deal of assiduity. And they haye done it on the principle of bidding up such fancies as have for a long time lain dormant or at least moderately active. Notably among these have been the Western shares, which they gavea bounce to yesterday and have let alone to-day, aban- doning them for a spurt in Ohios and Western Union, "\ which, as an advertising medium, required to be made Attractive with the rest of the market. Accordingly, atthe close of the day these stocks exhibited more strength and activity than any other two on the list, and showed better progress during business hours. By thus taking hold of one k after another and advertising it, as it were, with’ the display of the printer’s art, the present manipulators of the market hope to attract attention to and altimately buyers for their wares, Apart from the effects of the bull clique in Western Onion its sudden and unexpected rise was due to the dissemination of fresh reports pointing to a consolida- tion with, or possibly lease of, the rival Atlantic and Pacific Company. Although it was not ascertained that the matter had as yet taken any definite form there are circumstances which’ point strongly in this direo- hon, and it is not improbable that some sort sort of an understanding will be had which will work to the ad- vantage of both companies. In this caso our old friend, the reliable contraband, who has been lurking about the premises for so many weeks, is likely to be turned out in the cold, carrying with him the odium of suspicion which his presence has so long entailed Taking the market altogether it may be described as An active one, with important dealings and satisfactory results for the bull side, These results are, however, more in the shape of larger figures on paper than of any general realization, The crop is above ground and looks favorable, and if marketed at the present or igher figures will bring satisfaction to the busband map, But there are many risks ahead, and even !f the har vest be garnered it is by no means sure that there are vither men or money to take it off the growers’ hands, THE SALES TO-DAY amounted to 180,000 shares, which were divided among Active stocks as follows;—New York Central and Hud_ von River, 430; Erie, 3,100; Lake Shore, 24,500; Cleve- and Pittsburg, 100; Northwestern, 16,400; do, rabbit: 4,050; ‘Rock Island, 4,100; Pacific Mail, 20,000; St Pau!, 10,500; do. preferred, 4,600; Ohios, , "5,800; Western Union, 36,345; Wabash, 1,300; Union Pacific, 1,000; C., C. and I. THE UNITED STATES TRRASURY, Washington advices state that the Treasury now holds $361, 700,000 in bonds to secure bank circulation and $18,600,000 to secure public deposits, National bank circulation outstanding, $43,320,000, of which $2,100,000 are gold notes. Revenue receipts to-day, $360,000, Total for the month to date, $9,330,000; total for the fiscal year to date, $66,500,000. Customs receipts to-day, $370,000. Total for the month to date, $10,500,000; total for the fiscal year to date, $86,500,000, Bank notes received to-day, $630,000, Total for the week, $4,830,000, The Assistant Treasurer paid out to-day $38,000 gold oh account of interest, and $92,000 in redemption of five-twenty bonds, The Treasury operations for the last week included the disbursement of $350,000, gold, on account of in- terest and $427,000 in redemption of five-twenty bonds, and the receipt of $1,421,600 for customs. The ‘Treasury shipments of legal tenders and tractional cur- rency for the week were $1,440,000. The following are the Treasury balances at the close of business to-day :— Currency, $8,400,000; coin, $71,000,000, of which $24,500,000 are coin certificates. THE PORKIGN MARKET. The London advices report the withdrawal of £32,000 sterling from the Bank of England on balance to-day. The foreign commerce of the port for the pagt week ‘was as follows :—General merchandise imports, includ- ang dry goods, $5,224,431; produce exports, $5,610,526, and specte oxporte, $436,167. The total imports at the ports since Jannary 1, this year, were $27,518,546, against $25,888,137 for the corresponding period in 1875 and $25,644,597 in 1874. The total exports of prodoce from the port since January 1, this year, wero $19,842,541, against $16,744,402 for the corresponding period in 1875 and $20,781,489 in 1874, The tota; exports of specio since January 1 were $1,976,090, against $9,024,323 in 1875 and $2,347,578 in 1874.
