GOLD HEAVY AT 112 7-3 A 112 5-8. The Governor of Wisconsin on the Granger Law—Money on Call 5 and 6 Per Cent—Government and Rail- way Bonds Firm. Watt Strert, ‘Taorspar, Jan. 18—6 P.M. Dulness, in its old familiar form, made its appear- anco again in the street to-day. Like the inexorable dun, that we hoped had gone abroad or been lost at sea, or had departed to that bourne from which travellers get no retarn tickets, our old friend, or enemy, turned up with pristine vigor and made his presence felt to- day, ‘There was a change of affections also, and a very marked desire on the part of operators to get off with ‘the old jove of Lake Shore and to get on with the new one of St. Paul. ' For the first time in many weeks the favorite of the smarket bas been snabbed and comparatively neglected, Judged by comparison of transactions stock operators have acted upon the sage’s advice to ‘go West,” and have abandoned the great lako for the mighty river. How long this transfor of interest 1s to ‘last is an open question, but it is a surety for to-day, at least, thata much. more considerable amount of stock changed hands among the St. Paul speculators than among those of Lake Shore, Ia spite of this new Richmond in the field affairs were comparatively dull and dreury. Stock Exchange animals, like those of the ‘Zov,’’ must be constantly stirred up if you would have music, and positively re- fuse to ‘grow! or tight,’? whether it be their nature to or not, without some outside prodding. Whether the Aeaders of the market are taking an off day to sharpen their stick preparatory to another stirring up, or whether stocks, like pigs, can be brought to a bad mar- ket, when short interests are closed and an apprecia- tive public stand aloof, are suggestions we leave our readers to consider for themselves, We cun only reit- erate our opinion, so often expressed before, that ‘speculation is confined to the four walls of the Ex- change. So long as there are cont ts for an ad- wance pitted against contestants for a decline a fair amount of activity will prevail, but the moment that bulls and bears reconcile differences, and become a aspecies of “happy family,” shutters ure put ap and the shop is torent, And this appears to be about tho condition of things at the present writing. Operators who have looked at the future course ot financial matters with a doubting eye, and, as it were, “through a glass darkly,” began to fear that the horo- scope they had cast was faulty in some of its elements and that the stars might be unpropitious after all. Once possessed of this idea they hastened to repatr their error, and, as the pendulum swings back to the point of its departure, they not only skipped out of the frying pan of “short”? contracts, but have appar- ently tumbled into the fre of a “long” market, with no purchasers. No doubt the equilibrium will speedily be restored again, when we shall see another advance, with its suc- ceeding lull. It ts not likely, however, that the short side of the market will, for a congiderable time to come, ofler any very remunerative returm to specu- lators, ‘The presence of the Centennial year is held up as a talisman that shall compel prosperity, and this very determination is more patent than most people give it credit for. There are clouds still lowering “o'er our house” which threaten the peace of the world and our own prosperity, but these once “in the deep ocean buried’ the future is full of promise. We believe that nope in the revival of speculation is for some time to be a hope deferred; but it need not be ofthat nature which “maketh the heart sick.” Tho evil days which have marked tne passage of so many past months are slowly passing away, and as money— to-day positive necessity to keep the wolf from the door—becomes in some shape a superfluity, it will gradually tind its way to the Stock Exchange and into the pockets of brokers who have almost forgotten the took of its cheerful face. The transactions at the Stock Exchange to-day ag- gregated 92,000 shares; which were distributed among active stocks as follows:—New York Central and Hud- son, 655; Erie, 1,800; Lake Shore, 20,250; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 800; Northwestern, 10,500; North- western preferred, 4,400; Rock Island, 1,400; Pa- cific Mail, 9,100; St Paul, 15,600; St. Paul preferred, 910; Obios, 3,100; Western Union, 3,400; Wabash, 3,655; Union Pacific, 1,800; C., C, and I. SAN FRANCISCO MINING INTRLLIGENOR. ‘The news from the Bonanza Mines isto the effect that the damages by the late firo are repaired, or nearly 60, and the work is going on as before, but with improved machinery and increased facilities The C, and C. shaft in the California company’s mine ts sunk and timbered to the extent of over 960 feet and is progressing at tlre rate of twenty-five feet per week. The north drift on the 1,550 foot level is reported as running throug good quality of ore, while the lateral drift to connect with the Ophir mine is steadily con- tinued. Tho Consolidated Virginia Company have large quantities of ore above the mine and are increasing their milling capacity im order to convert it into bullion more rapidly. Total ore extracted per week 8,500 to 4,000 tons. There has been no interruption to the regular monthly dividends of $10 gold per share on the shares of this company. There are THRER STOCK BOARDS I¥ SAN FRANCISCO, each holding two daily sessions, with sales often aggre- gating 150,00C shares per day, at prices running from 10 cents to $400 pershare. By the board rules com- miasions are reckoned on the cost price and not upon the par value as in our own exchange. The advertise- ments of destroyed certificates show that large amounts of shares were lost by the Virginia City fire. The rules of the principal companies require, before the issue of certificates In lieu of old ones lost, that the latter shall be advertised im a daily local paper for thirty days, an affidavit of loss shall | be Gied with the company, and a satisfactory bond with good sureti equal to about double the stock, When all this is done to the satisfaction of the officers of the company @ new certificate is made was issued, Letters from Caltfornia report increased orders from New York for mining shares, but almost entirely for sach as are paying, or are likely soon to pay, regular dividends, while our 3an Francisco friends jook forward with apparent confidence to the time m their purely speculative shares will be equaliy popular with Eastern buyers. A special telegram gives the following further about interesting items mining and treasure movement The Company paid a dividend of on Monday, and has s balance of $400,000 on hand. The steamship City of Peking took out to China $225,000 treasure and 915 flasks of quick- ‘reasury receipts for the past six months were $23,383,664; disbursements, $28,629,041. A large portion of the lower workings of the Ophir Mine has caved im and closed up. The bullion ship- | ments of different mines for one day aggregated $670,000, i. Governor Luddington, ot Wisconsin, has advised the Legislature to repeal the (Potter) Railroad law, but accompanies it with a recommendation to enact a sub- stitute creating a Board of Commissioners to control rates, &c. The proposition to repeal, therefore, looks like a ‘tub thrown to the whale’’—the railroad interest that helped elect him. The improvement shown to-day in the prices of At- lantic and Pacific preferred, C., C. and I, C. and Wabash is supposed to be due to the beneficial effects of the approaching ‘Centennial.’ Mr. Davis, of West Virginia, in his speech made to- day im the United States Senate, directly charged that the Treasury Department for years has made fraudulent reports and statements of tts condition. Thereare many persons in and around Wall street who have enter. taifed similar suspicions, The “Specie Resumption bill’? introduced in the House of Representatives yesterday by Mr. Schleicher, of Texas, was the subject of much favorable comment on the street to-day.
