NEW YORK HERALD, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1875.——TRIPLE SHEET. - FINANCIAL AND COMMERCTAL. Phe Stock Market More Active and Prices Somewhat Higher. GOLD 112 8-4 A 1138. (Money Easy on Call at 6 and 7 Per Cent. Governments Active—Investment Securities in Fair Requéest—A Stormy Meeting of Missouri Pacific Stockholders, Wary pra 1 Turspar, Dec, 28—6 P, M. By mutual consent the seven days that are ‘marked ‘by Christmas on the one hand and the birth of the new year on the other are popularly supposed to be con- gecrated to the enjoyment of a holiday season. Things wecular, a8 far as they refer to the daily toil and tur- _ moil of a bread winning existence, are presumed to lie dormant for the time being, and the drowse of idle pdays and the dolce far niente of sluggish hours are popularly supposed to mark the course of the wyearly festival, Stock brokers are “quite as ready to call it half a day—or even absorb a whole one—as any of the rest -of the work-a-day world, and they particularly affect ‘the holidays which close up the year; but times ha been bad, commissions few and a general “down-in™ ‘the-mouth’’ feeling is sorely prevalent. So commis- pve brokers have voted the holiday week toothsome, Ubut touchless. Instead of a regiment of Falstaf's ragged recruits—the ragbag and bobtail of the Stock ach army—the whole financial force was on hand ‘yesterday and to-day eager tor the fray. Instead ‘tne dull, inert market appropriate to the Christmas ‘week we have been treated to oue of fair activity and ‘arm prices. There was quite a snap in opening prices, and for a ‘time ‘‘all went merry as a marriage bell,” but, as often Mhappens in real life, speculators who rashed to buy found when the market receded they had ‘married in Mhaste to repent at leisure.” Still the drop in prices pwas inconsiderable, and at the close of business quota- ‘tions were about equal to the best of the day. Lake Shore, as has been its history for weeks past, | ywvas the centre of attraction, and, although its fluctua ‘tions were inconsiderable, it bore off the palm as regards fmagnitade of business, The buil party in this took have probably rendered themselves suffl- iently comfortable in money matters, and have ar- Wanged to carry their load by the old plan of bor- wowing or stealing exchange (say some $3,000,000) ‘on hypothecation of the stock and selling the bills and Bubseq@ent gold for cash. This process makes them apparently short of gold for the time being, but in view -of matters political and commercial the risk isa fair vone, Jay Gould, to show that he was still alive and kick- Ung, stirred up the almost expired ¢mbers of Union Pacific to-day, and created a flame that consumed some 11,500 shares of the stock at prices that varied from 743¢ 076. As itis probable that both selling and buying orders wore indited by his own hand we may assume ‘as correct the brokers’ cant phrase that there “was mothing done.” There was quite a hurrah in Pacific Mail at the open- ing; but the increased prices brought in good sellers ‘who demoralized the market quite much ‘by their presence as by their offerings, and the stock closed dull and off of best quotations. St. Paul preferred invited a very respectable degree of attention late in the day on the rumor. that a divi- end would shortly be declared, and sanguine opera- Zors’bid the property up, nearly one per cent. It could mot be ascertained that there was any truth fin the report, and it is quite probable that there is no more foundation for it than if it had been found in the veye of the late lamented Betsy Martin. Boyond the stocks we have referred to the rest of the ‘market was quiet, being marked by siight fluctuations only. Ohio and Mississippi manifested a spasmodio activity, being characterized by a sale to ono broker of 2,000 shares, possibly for Montreal acoount, but the Anterest commenced and ended with this transaction. THE TOTAL TRANSACTIONS OF THE DAY show an improvement aggregating to 119,162 shares, distributed among the active stocks as follows:— New York Contral and Hudson, 1,100; Erie, 4,600; Bake Shore, 39,615; Northwestern, 2,250; do. preferred, 2,800; Rock Island, 910; Pacific Mail, 26,300; St. Paul, 6,104; do. preferred, 10,800; Ohios, 5,050; Western ‘Wnion, 23,000; Wabash, 100; Union Pacific, 1,500; G, ©. andl. It was pre- sided over by the Mayor of St. Louis, The proceedings were lively and occasionally suggestive ef a kind of Western civilization that astonished even the most sen- sational of Wall street brokers. No inkstands were thrown or blows passed, but it was not an unfamiliar remark during the meeting that “You're a liar and a scoundrel,” “That man has been charged with felony,” “The officers of this company are among the most rep- utable citizens of St. Louis,” “Stockholders, I appeal to you to hold these parties to a strict accountability,” “If the charges agaiust these geutlemen be true they ought to be wearing striped jackets in the Peniten- tiary,”’ and soon. Taken altogether the meeting was more Atlantic than Pacific in character. After hearing longthy speeches, badinage, abuse and railway arith- metic the meeting adjourned until to-morrow at twelve M., with a St. Louis lawyer ‘n possession of the fluor. MEMORANDA. Cable despatches to-day report @ farther decline of 2d. in wheat and 34. in corn at Liverpool. ‘Tho exports (exclusive of specie) from this port for the week amount to $3,739,424, against $5,266,477 for the corresponding week of 1874. The “bull’’ talk of the street to-day has run some- thing like the following some time in January. It is quite likely that prices may fall off again, but in two or three weeks we will show you a bull market.” A bet of $10,000 has been made between two promi- nent operators, representing, of course, diverse inter- ests, that Lake Shore would sell at 80 next year. An- other wager of considerable dimensions has been made | that Lake Shore would sell at 50 before it touched 70, The Chicago Tribune says that there has been a con- certed movement among the country people to hold their produce and stock from the market, and this has bad its influence in enhancing the country need for funds, In addition, the wet weather has made the roads bad, and made dificult the marketing of what | qu products were for sale, Tho lightening of the loan market ie seen in the East as well as in the West. The Union Pacific Railroat Company pay a dividend of per cent on January 3. New York Central pays a similar dividend on the same date. A semi-annual dividend of 4 por cent has been declared by the Im- porters and Traders’ Bank. NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE SALES el Thesoay, Dec, 28, 1875 BEFO! CALL—10 A.
