St. Louis, Mo., Dec, 24, 1875, ‘The Henauo’s stupendous exposure of the “0, A. U.”” has stirred up the politicians in this section, because it is known that branches of the Order exist (if they do not flourish) about here. Few people paid any atten- tion to the local organizations, but now that the Order is demonstrated to be so strong in New York and Ohio, much curiosity is felt respecting our home societies, I have heard the opinions of a good many prominent men, but I have ouly time to hastily sketch some of them. The Times, in connection with clippings of the Tues- day bombshell in the Heraup, published an account of a lodge or society here which it claims is an offshoot of the “0. A. U."’ and to which, it alleges, E. W. Fex, the former chairman of the Republican Central Committee, belongs, This gentleman, who has been a hard worker for the republican party here for years, denies that he belongs to the local organization and expresses disap- proval of all such societies as work in the dark. Ex-Governor Thomas C. Reynolds expressed similar views, és Ex-Governor Thomas C, Fletcher says he does not believe such an organization exists here. He said that he had read the Heraup carefully, and he doubted not but that there was an organization in the kast, con- trolled by ambitious men of no ability, most of them mere | olfice-seekers, He gays that overa year ago certain political shysters here had approached lim on the sub- ject, and that he refused to have anything to do with them, He gave it as his opinion that secret organiza- tions connected with a political party had always been and would ever prove to be a burden to whatever party gave them countenance. Lieutenant Governor Charles P. Johnson, in speaking of the Hnauo’s ezposé, said hit he had’ read the re- ports and that he believed such an orgapization would have but little effect upon the politics of the country. Whatever weight it might have had was destroyed by the exposure of the Hemanp, He denounced any secret organization in the interests of any political party, Any | party linked with it could not but suffer an ignominious | deteat, ~~ OBITUARY.
