The morning | manipulation of Lake Shore is worthy of a passing comment. The price was raised from 61% to 617% by the orders simultaneously given to ten or fifteen | brokers each to buy 100 or 200 shares “uick,"’ which, of course, created quite an active demand for a short | time, but the plot seemed to fail of catching any | “gudgeons,” for the price as quickly dropped to 6134 ‘and then to 614, from which it was rallied at the close | 406134. Lf the “yarns” which are persistently retailed | concerning this stock contain the one-hundredth part of truth, then that portion of the country within ten mules of its line is. a wonderful exception to the general | condition of the trade of the United States. MEMORANDA General Anson Stager, General Superintendent at Chicago of tho Western Union Telegraph Company, 1s reported to have expressed himself upon the proposed reduction of the salaries of the employés of the:com- pany as follows:—'I think it is the most sensible thing that the company could do under the circumstances, You perceive that the receipts of the company have fallen-off materially since October up to the present time—that is, in comparison with the same months of other years, Since the pauic the Western Union has neither constructed nor reconstructed any of its lines, but now, that many of its lines have become old and useless, and new places are springing up, ft is forced to adopt some new mode of business, The only sensible thing the company could do was to retrench, aud the Hxecutive Committee were of the opinion that no- where on the expense list could this retrenchment be more appropriately commenced than on salaries’? It is quite evident that the Chicago officials of our corporations require some “coaching.” They seem to have the bad habit of speaking the truth, trrespective of the speculative interest of their brother officials who re- | side near the New York Stock Exchange. Witness the above concerning Western Union, and what Mr. Keep, ‘| President of the Chicago and Northwest Railroad, re- cently said concerning its floating debt, in contradiction of the reyorts current bere, RALLMOAD PRETGHTS, From the several meetings which have already taken place between the agents of the New York’ and Boston roads there seems to be but little prospect of any agreement being arrived at whereby the rates from Boston will be made to harmonize with those now ex- isting from this city. | It is reported from Toledo that the decree of fore- 2 | closure in Toledo, Wabash and Western Railroad gold | bonds is entered, No appearance made on the part of stockholders. Wheat and corn at Chicago and other western points | continues to respond to the presence of large accamu- lations and shows a steadily declining tendency. Bad | again for the railroads.
