In continuation of the handball tournament yester- day the United States champion, Philip Casey, and Martin Eagan played against James Casey (brother of Philip) and his partner. The players, on entering the tourt, seemed to be in excellent condition. They tossed for first inning, the toss being won by Philip, who gave his partner the first play. Eagan served briskly and cleared 4 points ®efore retiring, which he was forced to do by James Casey, who took the ball on the fly and returned it low and viciously strong. James’ partner now commenced serving and secured 5 points before retiring. James then foRowed his partner, making 2 points; aud Eagan, coming in strong and quick, scored 6 Philip now took his hand and after some severe right and left. handed play | scored 5. James followed him, counting 6, and bis partner came in and made 4 points, when he was re- tired by a hard low ball from Philip. The marker now called the score, 15 to 17 in favor of James and partner, Bagan taking his hand succeeding in scoring 3 points. Philip followed, adding 8 points to hig score, finishing the game, the Scores standing 21 to 17 in his favor. SRCOND GAME. After a spirited contest of tweuty minutes’ duration the third game resulted in favor of James and partner, the score standing 21 to 14. This game was won by clean, sharp play all the way through. FOURTH GAME, In commencing the fourth game all hands seemed even more than usually earnest in their efforts for suc- cess, The marker called equal score at 16. If tho English “Herald College” had been applied to for a crest, which in the sense of “canting arms” would have been peculiarly appropriate to to-day’s business (or more correctly, want of business), the institution referred to would properly have granted a “skylark, gules et argent.” In fact skylarking was the chief occupation of mem- bers for the better part of the day, and if Fortune sulked, Frolic did her best to retrieve the situation. After yesterday’s high jinks in Lake Shore and its unsatisfactory wind-up, it is not remarkable that the stock should to-day have manifested a tendency to apathy and torpor. Defeated in their purposes by broken faith and unfulfilled pledges, the operators in the poo! were more disposed to reflect on the instability of human promises in the retirement of their offices than to appear upon the floor of the Exchange. Hence the result we have noted above—an intense, dreary dwiness, scarcely surpassed by that of a midsummer’s day. We have pointed out again and again, until we are weary of the reference, that the stock market, if left to itself, will naturally fall into a state of coma, It must be pushed and prodded and generally excited in an artificial way or it falls into lethargy. It is like a man who has taken an overdose of morphine—he must be kept on the move, or a drowsiness, which may be death, overcomes him. Remove the stimulants that the chief stock doctors are generally ready to admin- ister and we find the patient in a sad state indeed. And to-day’s business history proves the truth of our proposition that there is no real strength or stability in the “‘sick man’ of the Stock Exchange. He will lie quietly where he {s and, possibly, grow no weaker; but it must be some time yet before, unaided, he can take up his bed and walk. Our stock doctors to-day kept aloof from the invalid, and, there being no good Samaritan public to lend an assisting hand, he lay somnolent and comatose, and of no particular benefit to anybody. Not unfrequently events prove the elegiac truth that ‘physicians were in vain,” as was shown in their treatment of the Lake Shore case fora day or two back. Here was a patient notoriously drop- sical, with its life blood half water, and weighted down with five hundred thousand ills, attempted to be cured by infinitesimals. Our wise medi- cal men, consulting together, recommended tapping, and drew off some 50,000 shares of the watery stock, hoping by this depletion to set the invalid upon his legs again. But the treatment proved to be a@ faflure, It was childish when it should have been heroic and pellets took the place of pills. In aword the endeavor to con- trol and advance the price of a cumbersome stock like Lake Shore by the purchase of so limited a number of shares was fated to meet with disappointment from the stark There occurred nothing particularly remarkable in the other faticies which usually invite attention, and even the decision ot Judge Donohue, granting the in- junction restraining the Panama Railroad from con- verting itself into a steamship company, failed to favor- ably affect Pacific Mailor even to restore it to the high- ) est prices of the day, Northwest common was at one time active under the patronage of the geometrical operator, but failed to stick at the highest price, and this remark is generally true of almost every other stock upon the list. As the day drew near its close there appeared to be a concentrated action to inspire some life into the entire market, as though guns were being loaded for a ficld day to-morrow. As far as an advance in prices went, however, {t was ‘Voz et praterea nihil,” for, though a | certain amount of activity was manifested, stocks, as will bo seen elsewhere, closed off from the best prices of the day. Considerable excitement is understood to exist among the officials of the Northwestern Railroad owing—first, to the feverishness of the company in anticipating statements that have not been made, and, secondly, toa statement that it is said has been published in Chicago, which may reach tho city to-morrow or next @ay. The Vice President of the company, on the contrary, in- forms us that ‘‘al) ts well.”” Judge Donohue to-day rendered his opinion upon the application to make the injunction perpetual restrain- ing the Panama Railroad Company from engaging in the steamship business. He granted the motion It may be good law to tie the commerce of the country to the’chariot of Wall street speculators, but it is bad for our commerce. An important point relating to stock transactions was | also decided to-day, by Judge Lawrence instructions to the jury, in the suit of Yerkes, Jr., et al. va. Sol- omon. The plaintiffs bought three “straddles” from defendant in Lake Shore and Pacific Mai! stock, at sixty days. Beforo sixty days defendant failed and plaintiffs sued for the loss, and the defence was that the case came under the Gambling act because it was nota bond fide sale, but a sale of property the party to it did not possess. The Court ruled otherwise, holding that the case was covered by the act of 1858, relating to the sale of stocks, and directed a verdict for plaintiffs In $5,676, Dut gave sixty days’ stay to allow the case to go to the General Term. We are informed that the much talked of clatm by the State of Missouri against the Hannibal and St Joseph Railroad for back taxes is not likely to result in anything. The entire demand ts for $50,000, and tho company do not anticipate the necessity of paying a penny. It is ramored in Boston to-day in commercial circles that E.
