Winxesearnn, Dec, 5, 1875. ‘A visit to the scene of the recent mine disaster near Plymouth, made oa Saturday, demonstrated the fact that the account of the casualty furnished was uot in the slightest degree exaggerated. Mr. O’Conor was weaker last night than he had been previously, owing, it is supposed, to the change in the weather. The officials of the Susquehanna Coal Company, | who operate the Graud Tunuel, are exceedingly reti- cent in regard to THE DAMAGE DONK to their mine, and seem disinclined to give any in- formation on the subject They affect to treat the matteras of slight moment, but, notwithstanding this feature in the case, the fuct is anquestionable that the cave-in is the most extensive that ever occurred in this country or in any other where coal mining is carried on. The heaviest fall ever before known in Luzerne county was that at the Baltimore miue, near this city, some years ago, when thirteen acres tumbled down into the excavation. Asto the cause of the event at Plymouth there seems to be a disposition on the purt of the sufferers to lay TRE vam upon their neighbors, with what show of justice it is at present impossible to say. The Grand Tunnel tolks intimate that the difficulty commenced in the Chaun- | cey mine, while the mauagers of the latter colliery are fully impressed with the belief that they are in no way responsible for the disaster which fell so simul- taneously upon the mines. Quite a war of words is likely to Spring up in due season, before the question is setiled, and in the meantime both parties are busily en- gaged in repairing damages and earnestly endeavoring to tind out Lbe cause of the startling effects which have been vo suddenly and mysteriously produced, lt will be several mouths before either result is reached, and tn the meantime the problem must remain unsolved. The Grand Tunnel mine is wholly tuaccessible, from the enormous mass of rock by which it has been choked, and us no particular information could be ob- tained in that quarter investigations were turned to the Chauncey wine, and tbrough the politeness of Messrs. Roberts & Slaudisb, two of the lessees of the property, AN RXAMINATION Was made as far into the mine as the débdris of coal aud rock would permit’ Passing through a tunnel, a distance of 900 feet, into the Shawnee Mountain, which ‘wwers between 300 und 400 feet above, the mine was reacued. The obstruction commences near the foot of ihe slope, bat how far it extends into the mine can only be conjectured, At this point the bed of the slope seems to bave been pressed up from below, as the top appeared intact and the aperture was closely packed with @ mass of coal {rom a pillar measaring 75 by 100 feet, which bad been crowded against the roof, This cual looked as if it had passed through a breaker, and some of it was fairly pulverized. This feature is re- garded as wost mysterious, and fairly astonishes the mine experts, wloare without any theory for the strange upheaval. Mr. Albrighton, who has an ex- perience of sixty-one years in mining, declares that he as no knowledge of Such an effect baving been pro- duced in amine before; and Mr. Roberts, his partner tn business, who bas worked in mines for nearly tity | years, also says that be vever knew anything of the kind ‘before. Both of the gentlemen unhesitatingly expressed the opinion that the fall was the HEAVIEST AND MOST DISASTROUS ever known in their experience. How this vast | area sold rock was thus moved from its ancient fastnesses will probably remain among .the unexplained mysteries which our earth bax from time to time produced At uny rate we mast wait until human skill bus exhausted itself in efforts to unravel it. It is ciaimed that both | the mines embraced in the common ruin were well sup- phed, and areference to the map of Chauncey mine, Which shows where numerous pillars varying from 100 to 00 feet square have been left by the gangways, seems to corroborate the statement. It that there will be no further full, as the rock of the mountain has so wedged iiself that itcan descend no further, A GENERAL SUSPENSION, It Ig intimated that a general suspension of eal pro- duction in Wyoming Valley will be ordered to take Place on or about the 15th inst., and it seems probable that the mine will remain die well on toward spring. The same causes which led to the suspension in Schuyl- Kull county will operate im this quarter. The mmers are illy prepared for this emergency, but there seems to be no alternative left for them in’ the present de- pression of trade. There cannot fail to be much dix dress among them during the winter. WHE CLEVELAND WIFE MURDER DETAILS OF THE HORRIBLE AFFATR AND OP THE ARREST OF THE MURDERER CunveLaxp, Obio, Dec 5, 1875 The following details of the murder of Mra Asden, by her busband im tbix city at an early hour on Satur- ay morning, have been developed by the investign tion:— Itseems that Mr. aud Mrs Aiden, who resided on the heights, had trouble for some time, and recently separated, but the husband begged the wile to return to him,’ which she did. Miss Hattie Aiden, the stepdaughter of the murderer, who worked in a millinery store, woula not live home, | but went to bourd with the family of George L. Benton, ‘This enraged Aidea, who made threats to compel her to return, but no attention was puid to him. Yesterday ‘Aiden ‘and his wife had trouble, but nothing serious cccurred until early this morning, when he accused her of concealing money from hin. She made some reply, which so enraged him that he seized a hammer and killed her. He then hitched bis horse to his wagon, took the bloody hammer and drove to Forest street, hitched bis horse near Garden street, and walked to the residence of Mr. Benton. Mra Benton and Miss Aiden were sittiug at the breakfast table when Aiden came in, shut aud locked the door and commenced his bloody work. It is supposed that he first attacked his stepdaughter, and, Mra- Benton in- terfering, he assanited ber. The neighbors of Mra Ben- ton heard the screams of “Murder!” and the scuflling but the men bad all gone to work. It was some tino before Aiden went out. urely away from the Louse, and then saw Mra.
