YESTERDAY IN. PARIS. The Burial of Dejazet— Church and Stage. ehhh Orem CENTENNIAL MUSIC. \ Ole Bull’s Programme for This Month. ‘Capoul Denies His Marriage to Sophie Heilbron. BAGIER’S FAILURE. Ullman Spites Bordeaux—Maple- son Not to Come. GEROME AND MEISSONIER. The Two Washburnes Go to Tur- key and Egypt. ‘SPECIAL DESPATCH TO THE HERALD BY CABLE, } | New Yorx Henatp Bureau, 61 AvENUVE pg t’OPERA, Pants, Dec. 4, 1875. Ihave just returned from the funeral ‘ceremonies of Déjazet, ‘the Muse of the Vaudeville,” at the Church of the Trinity. All that is distinguished in Paris paid respect to the grand old lady. Although the church will contain 4,500 people, tickets were is- sued without limit, and thousands of ticket holders were excluded from the church. She was eighty when she died, and there were men in the throng who spoke of her only as a maiden; though, for that matter, there was very little girlishness about the sallow, . whimsical masquerader. To be sure, she was lively, but only with the liveliness of eaprice and deviltry. Even Iago is brilliant sometimes, and Lucca is charming whon she drives everybody mad ; so Déjazet was prettily wicked. She succeeded because she was not spirituelle, but spirited. But, then, she was almost historical. She was great in her way, and Paris adored her. CHURCH AND STAGE. Those of us who were able to get within the church witnessed an affecting service, The music was furnished by performers from the opera. The Church gave her its blessed burial rites, and she was interred at Pére la Chaise, the grand cemetery of Paris, where, among others who have gone before her, lie | Abelard and Héloise, The pallbearers were Camille Doucet, Baron, Taylor, Coignard and Laferriére, DON JUAN. On Monday night Paris will be honored with a great event at the Opera House in the represensation of ‘‘Don Juan,” when there will appear Carvalho, Krauss, Gueymard and Faure. For this occasion the cost of scenery and ballet has been $60,000, Everything is perfect, and much excitement is manifested. MUSIO AND THE CENTENNIAL. You will be glad to know that the artists who are going over to the Centennial are not going in a spirit of mere venture and sensation. Great pains are being taken for making the musical event worthy of the greatness of the occasion. The result of a hundred years of artistic culture in Europe will go to render homage*to a hundred years of republican growth. Now that Offenbach is to appear in Philadelphia, others have de- termined to go; and a few who know Wagner say that he will not be able to resist the temptation. There are agents who have already arrived in Paris to engage artists to support Offenbach, whose heart is enlisted in the venture. He will, in no sense, disap- point you, ENGAGEMENT OFF. Zulma Bouffar has cancelled the New York engagement. OPERA AT THE LYRIQUE. The first opera to be given at the Theatre Lyrique will be by Victor Jonciéres in “Dimitri.” The libretto is by Henri Bornier. A venture in Italian opera, at the Salle Ventadour, by Graziani, the tenor, began and ended on Wednesday. OLE BULL, in his triumphal march through Europe, will appear in concert at the Ventadour in the middle of December; and Paris, which is always influenced by any hint of Bonaparte, finds glamour in the romantic idea that the straight-haired old Norwegian is to play for the Khedive at the base of the Pyramids, Musicians tell how when he first came to Paris he was so poor that he tried to drown himself; but how he afterward earned his first money here, We have some further claim to greet him enthusiastically, because his first wife was a French lady. caPpouL ‘was reported to have formed # marriage with Sophie Heilbron, but to-day he publishes » statement delicately but unequivocally de- nying the rumor, BAGIER, having indulged in too many and too expen- sive theatrical speculations, has been ruined thereby, and he now becomes Rossi’s agent, and will, no doubt, aid in the Centennial venture in the United States. MAPLESON NOT TO VISIT US. Tcabled you last fortnight that Mapleson Bad determined to co to the United States NEW. YORK HERALD, SUNDAY, DECEMBEK 5, 1875 —QUADKUPLE SHEET. on Decemper av ror the Centennial year, but, owing to a pressure of business affairs at the New Opera, he has been compelled to renounce his intended visit. |The house costs $600,000 in. debentures, of which $350,000 have been subscribed, | NILSSON AND BORDEAUX. Uliman has created somewhat of a sensa- tion by refusing to let Nilsson sing at Bor- deaux, because the civic and the military authorities inslat that they shall be per- | mitted to exercise the privilege of occupying \ boxes without paying for them. GEROME’S NEW PICTURE. In art gossip there is nothing so new as, and, of course, nothing more remarkable than, Gérome’s picture of a chariot race in the arena at Rome in the presence of Nero. It is full of spirit and action. MEISSONIER has an episode of the battle of Friedland, June 14, 1807, between the French, under Napoleon, and the Russians, under Benning- | Sen. Of course, the episode represents the French in the tide of victory, driving the Russians toward the Alle. scETOS' fine mould of Carpeaux’s face has been cast in bronze. 1 LITERATURE, Daniel's ‘Revolution Frangaise et la Féodalite” is a valuable historical essay, which has appeared this week; and with it comes Bertall’s ‘‘Vie Hors de Chez Soi,” which is humorous and piquant. WASHBURNE'S ORIENTAL TOUR. Minister Washburne and his brother, the general from Minnesota, are about to make a tour of Egypt and Turkey for three months, PERE HYACINTHE gives authority to the statement which was recently cabled hence that he will visit America in the spring. THE STEAMSHIP AMERIQUE, 4 CONSORT VESSEL SAILS IN SEARCH OF THE DISABLED SHIP. Queenstown, Dec, 4, 1875. The steamship Ville de Brest, of the General Trans- Atlantic Company, has sailed from this port to seek her sister ship Amérique, before reported disabled at about latitude 49 north, longitude 20 west. ENGLAND. THE METROPOLIS SHROUDED IN A DENSE FOG— A FALSE REPORT CORRECTED. Lonpox, Dec. 4, 1875, A dense fog hangs (noon) over the metropolis. Street and railway trafMc is consequently interrupted, Dut no accidents have as yet been reported. NOT FROZEN TO DEATH. The report of the freezing to death of Mr. Westley Richards is denied to-day, OCEAN TELEGRAPHY.: THE RIVAL CABLE COMPANIES DISPUTING OVER THE QUESTION OF TARIFF OHARGES. Lonpon, Dec, 4, 1875. There has latterly been s rumor shat the Anglo- American Cable Company desires to augment the pres- ent rates of telegraphic tolls between Europe and America, PRESS OPINION OF THE MOVEMENT. The Daily News to-day, in its financial article, has the foliowing paragraph on what presumably relates to this rumor:—‘‘The Board of Directors of the Direct United States Cable Company yesterday refused to ac- cede to certain demands of the Anglo-American Tele- graph Company relative to tariffs. The result will prob- ably be a renewed contest between the rival companies and a low tariff.” A BLOW AT REPUDIATION. THE STATE CREDIT OF WEST VIRGINIA TO BE PRESEBVED—SIGNIFICANCE OF THE NEW AP- POINTMENTS. Ricumonn, Dec. 4, 1875. There are said to be a number of the semi-repudia- tionists in the present General Assembly, but the schemes and aims of these received adeath blow to-day in the appointment of the Finance Committees of both Houses of that body. Senator A. B. Cochrane, a strict upholder of the public credit, is the Chairman of the Senate Committee, and Judge W. W. Crump, who is also strongly in favor of the payment of the State’s obligations, is Chairman of the Finance Committee of the House’ of Delegates. ‘The debt, exclusive of that portion allotted to West Virginia, is, in round figures, about $30,000,000, and the above appointments are indications that Virginia is determined to maintain her public credit, notwith- standing the fact that the new assessments are twenty per cent lower than the last, upon which taxation was based. MEXICAN BANDITTL CHAVEZ'S BAND OF MEXICANS ATTACK A MER- CHANT AND BREAK INTO HIS STORE—A GEN- ERAL FIGHT—SEVERAL WOUNDED. San Francisco, Deo, 4, 1875, A despatch received from Campo, San Diego county, near the Mexican line, reports an attack by Mexican bandits, They are supposed to be Chavez’s band. L. Gaskill, a merchant, was probably fatally wounded, His brother and others were seriously wounded and several arc missing. One of the robbers was killed and @ number wounded, Gaskill’s store was robbed of everything of value, which the Mexicans carried off, ‘The Governor of Cullfornia has asked for the apprehen- sion of the bandits, who have probably crossed the boraer. THE LOCAL OPTION LAW. ‘Tnustox, N. J., Dea 4, 1875, Applications will be made to the Legislature, which convenes In January next, for the repeal of the Local Option law, which exists in portions of Camden and Cumberland countios. Under this law the voters in thesesplaces have declared against granting licenses to sell intoxteating liquors, consequently there is not a whiskey don or beer shop at present in Millville, Vine- land or Haddon, SALE OF LIVE STOCK. Toronto, Ont., Dee, 4, 1875. The sale of short horns, draught horses and Cots- wold sheep at the Crystal Palace yesterday was the largest ever held in Canada The three highest prices fees were $4,500 for Seventeenth Duke of Airdri: ught by A. McClintock, of Millersburg, Ky.; $4, for Kirkleighton Duchess Eighteenth, bought by H. Cochrane Campton, and $3,700 for Oneida Rose, bought by B. B. Groom, of Kentucky, The total sum realized was $79,000, BLACK BEARS IN PENNSYLVANIA, Mizporp, Pa., Dec, 4, 1875, The inhabitants of Che western side of this village were startled this morning by the appearance of a huge black bear, which walked boldly down Water street, It came from the mountains, and crossed the Sawkill Creek on the ice and escaped. This is the tenth bear seen in Pike county this fall, eight of which were killed doar the “Promised Land’ lumver mills, THE POTATO BUG. Trextox, N. Important Operations on the Lon- don Stock Exchange. Transactions in Peravian, Turkish and Egyptian Securities. The Complications in the East and the Report on Foreign Loans. Violent Fluctuations Follow a De- preciation in Values. The Snez Canal Shares Purchase a Cause of Great Excitement. THE MARKETS FIRM AT THE CLOSE. [SPECIAL DESPATCH TO THE HERALD BY CABLE. ] | Lonvon, Dee. 4, 1875. The absorbing features on th» London Stock Exchange to-day were presented in the transactions which took place in Peru- vians Turkish and Egyptian stocks. A STEADY DEPRECIATION. The Eastern complication and the July report of the Foreign Loans Oommittee caused a steady depreciation in the prices of most foreign bonds, and the three stocks just mentioned especially suffered violent fluctuations under speculative manipulation. THE PERUVIAN FINANCIAL POLICY AND PLEDGE. The action of the Peruvian government re- garding the ratification of the contract for the sale of the guano which has been hypothecated for the payment of the annual interest on the Peruvian five per cent loan caused a panic. VARIATIONS IN THE PRICE OF THE STOCK. The fluctuations which have taken place in the price quotations of this stock within. the past three months make it range at from 26 to 44, To-day it is quoted at 30. THE CONTROLLING POWER—BUMOR OF A NEW ConTRACT. This Peruvian stock has been controlled by London and Continental cliques, the public at large keeping aloof from the spec- ulation. The latest rumor with regard to it is that there exists a prospect of a new contract with the Société Générale, which will be favorable to the holders, but there is nothing certain in this direction yet. TURKISH SECURITIES. The imsurrectidh panic news from the East, as affecting Turkish securities, culmi- nated in o change of three-fourths after the October announcement of a semi-repudia- tion of the reponsibility. EGYPTIAN STOCKS, Egyptians followed the samecourse, This stock experienced even larger fluctuations than the Turkish, owing to the Khedive’s financial troubles with regard to the floating debt. THE SUEZ CANAL SHARES. The nows of the purchase of the Suez Canal shares-by England came like a thun- derclap upon the operators on 'Change. It produced great excitement, This was followed by an advance in Egyp- tians of twelve. Turkish securities sympa- thized, especially those of the tribute loan. ‘MB. CAVE'S APPOINTMENT. The appointment of Mr. Cave, M. P., as the Khedive's financial adviser exerted, also, a favorable influence on the price of Egyp- tian stocks. THE NOVEMBER SETTLING DAY. At the period of settling day, at the end of November, the largest known nominal value of foreign stocks which passed the Clearing House was $1,500,000,000, or £300,000,000. THE MARKETS FIRM—A GOOD PROSPECT. All the markets are now quite firm at the highest prices.
