| | | FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Ste ‘The Stock Market a Trifle Firmer, with a Comparatively Dull Business. GOLD OPENED AND CLOSED AT Lt 7-8, 1 Rag Currency 87.04—Money on Call Easy at 4 and 5 Per Cent—Activity in Railroad Bonds—Government Securities Strong. Wate Sreerr, Taursvar, Deo. 2—6 P. ‘The great pachas of the stock market did not appear ‘pon the scene at all to-day, and were probably resting quietly in their seraglios, engaged in plaiting their three tails, after the Oriental fashion, The dancing dervishes ef the board room had the matter all to themselves, and whenever they could spin an eight out of a stock they fiid so and then twirled into contented obscurity, Loft thus to the devices of petty operators the stock market showed little inclination to leave its natural state of bluggishness, and from first to last the fluctuations. were inconsiderable—opening, fancy and closing prices wero so near of the same figure that one was naturally reminded of the Egyptian symbol of eternity, where the circling serpent feeds upon the tip of its tail, lack- Ing a more generous dict. In plain words, prices loft off at the close pretty nearly where they opened, as the record in this column will show. ‘The ‘bruised arms” of the contestants afer yesterday’s enjoyment, are “to-day huug ap for monvments’—some time is required to fill up the list vf killed and wounded; some time wanted to get over old harts—but of this we may be assured, that many days will not elapse before the contending hosts are vpgain In position, when the war of speculation will go on as vigorously as ever. Acommendable zeal to prevent a panic is shown on the part of those who profess to quietly pull the manipulating wires from the ‘back’ offices of certain well known brokers. From various indications Pacific Mail is likely to be as practically dormant as Union Pacific was during its “washing” {nto notoriety. ‘he same game ts evidently being played. The impression is fast gaining ground that, ‘with a “spotter” in the market who registers the pur- chaser’s and seller’s namo of every transaction made, the chances for making money by either buying or Belling it are growing beautifully less, To-day the stock has fluctuated more widely than any other, sales Deing at 41% a 42041 and 41%. Yet probably not a dozen members of the Board could at any moment | ave given a quotation without making special in- quiry, so little bas it attracted attention or interest. Union Pacific, with nominal transactions of only 4,500 Bhares, has vibrated thus, 80 a 81% a 80. Michigan Central sold to the extent of 9,800 shares at 68.0595 a 5834 » 69% 059 259%. The demand for this stock was largely-from “shorts” who had early in- formation concerning the published ‘exposé’? in the Boston papers, and hence the advance, Without de- fracting from the reputation of the Boston expert who has the credit of having recently exposed the affairs of the “Eastern Railroad” so that the price of its stock dropped from above par to about 20, it seems a good time to remark that there are many in New York to ‘whom his examination of Michigan Central furnished mo new information, they having long since discovered that with the “rates” for transportation which have prevailed for the past twelve moxths, it was simply im- possible for the roads running east and west between ‘New York and Chicago, to earn the interest on their enormously inflated debts. And they are confidently looking forward to the next annual reports to vindicate their opinions by showing increased debts, either floating or bonded. Lake Shore was quite active swith sales of 60,000 shares at 585 0 59% a 583, a 5934. Northwost exhibited some life in an advance from 38}, the opening, to 39, the closing price, with an apparent effort to connect Mr. Gould’s name with the movement ‘by employing ono of his prominent brokers to do the ‘buying. So faras the public are concerned it should make but Little difference who is the buyer ofa stock that has ahead of it $21,500,000 of prefersed stock on_ which seven per cent per’ annum must be first paid ‘before anything is paid on the common stock, and ‘which only earns net $5,000,000, or $518,000 over its Anterest indebtedness, And this on a rona 2,000 miles fong in 1874, against net earning in 1869 of over $6,000,000 with but 1,156 miles of road. The preferred Gtock was also firm, advancing from 53% a 53% to 54, St. Paul sold at 355g = 35% a 357% a 35% and the pre- ferred at 65% a 6534 a 655. Eric fluctuated from 155 415%. Ohio and Mississippi declined from 173¢ to 167% ‘withaclose at 17%. Hanibal and St. Joseph closed at 21} after sales at 20% and the preferred at 2632, after open- ng at 27 and declining to 25%. Inthe investment stocks nothing was done worthy of remark, Western Union was fairly active and closed at the best price of ‘the day, 75%, after sales at 74% a 74%. Illinois Cen- tral declined from 94 to 933%. New Jersey Southern, which a few of our readers will remember as the promised “Bonanza” of 1873, sold ata plain $1 per Bhare. Not a few bought this stock on Mr. Gould’s point, at 35, with visions of entire blocks of brown stone fronts, ‘TRE SALES TO-DAY mounted to 153,000 shares, which wore distributed Among active securities as follows:—New York Central and Hudson, 220; Erie, 2,800; Lake Shore, 60,125; | Northwestern, 4,500; do. preferred, 1,400; Rock HIsland, 400; Pacifle Mail, 27,470; St Panl, 2,000; do, preferred, 2,300; Ohios, 4,600; Western Union, 22,000; Wabash, 200; Union Pacific, 4,500, OPENING; HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES. ‘The following table shows the opening, highest and lowest prices of the day:— Opening. CUSTOM HOUSE RETRENCHMENT. ‘There was an air of despondency in the Custom House yesterday, and one of the officials remarked to a HERALD reporter, “This has been a perfect St. Bar tholomew’s day for us—such a slaughter of the im- nocents never took place before in ‘Poverty Corner.” However, wait till Congress meets, and some of the- ‘innocents’ will get reappointed. We shall soon have the importation of Exhibition goods commencing, and then we shall have to increase tha staff to a consid erable extent. We all hope that Congress will make an appropriation for the deficiency and that we can ge- on as before.” Night watchman are very sore over re ceiving only $2 70a night, and the day inspectors are very gioomy at being cut down from $4 to $3 60, The messengers and workmen down to the bottom grade are all reduced, but they hope when the fiscal yearends im duty that they will be put back on the old basis. MILK. WHAT IT COSTS THE CONSUMER AND HOW MUCH THE PRODUCERS ARE PAID FOR IT—THE GRASPING OF THE MIDDLEMEN. ‘A short time ago a combination was made by the milk sellers of this vicinity by which the price of the lacteal was raised to twelve cents per quart, When am inquiry was made ag to the cause of this extortionate price the dealers announced that in the dairy districts: many of the cows are sick, and that, consequently, the supply of milk bas of late steadily fallen of Of course this statement, as it could not immediately be denied upon proof, stood the dealers as well ag the truth would stand them. But now proof is at hand that the rise in price was di not by real exigencies, but Ji: jotated, not by ige pote rdid motives of the cows in dairy dieeriota from our milk supply is drawn are as pee There is no disease am: and abundaat, and their yiel as great as it ever was. In Ovange county t im splendid condition. But in that ounty and in other counties it is a fact not so much milk is pro- duced as could be. The reason for the fact is found im the contemptible grasping of the coterie of milk sellers that from time to time meets in Hester strect, and dic- tates not ouly what the consumers shall pay for the fluid, but also what the dairymen shall receive for it, ‘The dairymen now receive but four cents @ quart, while the consumers are charged twelve cents, The former are now in a state of revol.
