FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL A Partial Holiday in the Market— Stocks Steady. GOLD 114 3-8 A 114 1-2. Government and Railway Bonds Firm—Money on Call 3 and 4 Per Cent— Rag Paper 87.33, Watt Srresr, } Sarvrpay, Nov. 27—3 P. ia. Obedient to the order of the Governing Committee, the@tock Exchange closed to-day at one o'clock, in order to enablo its members to pay tribute to the mem- ory of the late Vice President Wilson. The total busi- ness of 53,000 shares, therefore, represents only three- Afths of an ordinary day. In classic Latin, ‘ex nihilo nihil fit;” in liberal Eng- lsh, a8 befits a free country, ‘you can’t make a silk purge out of a sow’s ear.” Hence the difficulty of com- piling a monoy article on ahalf holiday basis, par- ticularly when that holiday has been singularly barron of nows or rumors, The swing of prices was a sway upward, then downward, then upward again, but at no time was the oscillation sufficiently marked to cause a qualm to the most delicate financial stomach. At the end the active ones got out of their stocks as holiday makers get out of the “seup” when the féte is over, and wended their way homeward, blithe or sad, as fortune willed. Touching Union Pacific—not that we would recom- mend any to do so—there bad been apparently an up- peal to Mr. Gould to “sing me that air again,” for the old refrain about Jarky judges and a favorable deci- gion was chanted with the full strength of the com- pany. Tickets to tho entertainment distributed at from 784 a 743, and the last sold brought the highest price. Looked upon as a gift concert the affair at present may be deemed a success for the promoters. One of the characteristics of the Stock Exchange is the band of missionaries which pervades its halls—a band which for devotion to its duties would shame all | euch kindred asgociations of the Church. These un- selfish beings, having become short or long of “a hun. dred or two,’’ wander from stock group to stock group on the floor of the hall, proclaiming in stentorian tones the market prices of such securities as they imagine may, by decline or advance, affect their own in- terest, These disinterested persons are, unfortunately, aot always clear as to tho values of figures, and often get the bidding and offering prices strangely con- founded, Nevertheless, they possibly have their uses, as have fleas and mosquitoes, and we cannot yet see clearly into the general fitness of all created beings, When not quoting or misquoting prices our mission- aries are on the qui vive to induce speculators to buy or sell, as they themselves have bought or sold, urging their views with the childlike and popu- tar refrain that if you act according to their suggestions “it will do thee mo harm.’ We simply allude to the above class to sketch a feature of the market not generally known to the public, and to point out what dodges and expedients are resorted to in order to impart animation to the almost lifeless corpse of stock speculation. It is an axiom on the street that the public deal in stocks but mono way, ond that is by buying them for a rise, Outsiders seldom go “short” of the market and cannot be made 4o comprehend how one can sell what he has not got. If | | i i} A rainbow at night Ts a sailor’s delight jt is equally true thatabull market to a commission broker exhibits equal iridescent hues, and he scans the horizon of finance for signs of a bright day coming. But he need go no further than to consult the barometer which is always before his eyes—the arometer of the money market. The glass marking | “fair,” with the mercury rising, means a \egitimate demand for money .at seven per cent; she glass marking ‘‘foul’’ means money going a beg- ging at four per cent. ‘Fair’ presages a revival of wade, abealthy rise for money and @ dawning pros- perity for the country at large. ‘Foul’ points to sus- picton, impaired confidence and distrust of the future. | fhe broker thus reading the signs of the times will be | slow to believe that the halcyon days are yet at hand | which are to invite him to the enjoyment of long- deferred success. It is also stated that the | results of the recent advance in rates have not been of a character to encourage any present tightening of the screws, Further, it is thought that while the rates | from Boston to Chicago remain at 50 cents or less, the present rates fran New York present about as much adverse discrimination as even our merchants will qui- etly submit to. On tnis latter point we shall have some remarks to make when in possession of full informa tion. BALTIMORE AND LIVERPOOL.
