“FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Btocks Steady and Speculators Apparently Awaiting Further Developments. GOLD QUIET AT 114 1-2 A Il 3-8. Bags 87.24—Foreign Exchange Dull—Railway and Gevernment Bonds in’ Fair Re- quest—The Dry Goods Market. Wart Steer, Farivar, Nov. 12—6 P, M. ‘The general stock market to-day was weak and life- less until just before the close of business. The excep- ‘tions to the rule were’ Union Pacific and Pacific Mail, ‘the former of which was firmly held at 72 a 73%, with- out making any further a/lvance upon the best price of yesterday; while Pacific Mail, the tender to the “Big Bonanza,” was brought into prominence by active buy- dng from 8934 to 397, though reacting to 3934 It afterward went to 41, the final price. Apropos of this condition of affairs, the historical colored gentleman, who affecis a residence in a fence in preference to a respectable local habitation, made ‘his appearance in the street to-day, and, contrary to bis usual retiring disposition, indulged in the following .goasip:—“Union Pacific Railroad is being advanced not only to make a price which will offer a bold front to a | possible decline in case of an adverse decision on the (part of the justices of the Supreme Court, but also to favorably affect the stock of the Pacific Mail Company, swith which it has many interests in common.’ colored friend affirms that Mr. Gould is loaded with the stock; that Russell Sage is the happy (or otherwise, ‘possessor of 40,000 shares, and that Roach, the builder) looks toa round profit on his shipbuilding contract from an advance on the stock he holds as an equivalent tor his bill Be this rimor true or false, Paciflc Mail satock is to go to 50, tor Jay Gould says so, and he 4g surely an honorable man. Forthcoming reports with regard to economical management and increased receipts wili stimulate the market, and the bird that saved Rome will be elevated to a position exalted enough to please everybody. Although Jay Gould’s thimbleriggers didn’t yesterday reiterate the report of favorable judicial decision as their ‘fleeting pea,” | Union Pacific stock was with some difficulty manipa- Jated up to a point nearly us high as Thursday’s price. Tn view of a disastrous verdict the stock was stimu- | to meet the threatened | fated, as is a patient, Acnife of the surgeon. It was “rock a by, baby, on the stree top,” with a bope that the intervening branches, formed of higher figures, might break a disastrous fall, To treat the matter seriously, it is simply scandalous thatthe honor and integrity of the highest judicial court of the land should have been impugned as it bas ‘been by Mr. Gould and his followers, in order to foster ® stock movement questionable at the best. The names of the justices of the Supreme Court | have been bandied about the Stock Exchange a3 parties to barter and sale with a freedom that ‘would disgrace the mock officials of a pot house ‘judge and jury.” The private opinions of its individual mem- ‘bers are alleged to be known by the clique, and even the clerk of the court is pointed at asa leaky vessel that will sink or swim at the mandate of aroll of green- ‘dacks, If the. judicial ermine of our highest judicial tribunal is to be draggea through the mud with impunity, at the beck and call of stock gamblers, it is, to say the Jeast, a lamentable showing of the justice and purity of Fepublican institutions. Just before three o'clock, when Pacific Mail had reached 40%, there was a sudden rush at the whole list, resulting in an advance of about %% per cent, which looked like a desire op the part of the cliques that the Movements in their specialties should be backed by ‘an apparently strong market for the other fancics. We continue to hear complaints from those engaged in a legitimate commission business of an entire absence of orders, anda few of them express the wish that for sthe time being they might be In the line of clique trans- actions. # THE CHANGES TO-DAY. There is some intimation that an injunction will be served on the Panama Company by the Pacific Mail Company to prevent the former from putting a separate line of steamers on the route between New York and San Francisco, bat the Panama’ people express their ability to contest the same by reason of aclause in their charter which clearly permits them to employ, purchase, or in any manner use what steamers may be essential to the welfare of the company. If we may accept the opinions of some of the principals in this battle, a sharp contest is pending. ‘The Attorney General of the State has decided that savings banks can invest in District of Columbia 3.65 bonds, which reverses the opinion of his deputy, de- livered some time since. This practically places the issue referred to on a footing with government bonds. M. There has ocvurred but little change in the commer- cial status during the past week, though the material | recession of the gold premtum, combined with other influences, has occasioned fluctuations in prices and irregularity in the markets, “The changes have in very few instances been radical, however, though they have been numerous and frequent. In some commodities, as in cotton, provisions, | &e., the dealings have, in the main, been in tuture contracts, on account of speculators, but in the general run of merchandise the transactions have been to meet the legitimate requirements of the trade Business has been fair, but the demand for most com- modities shows some falling off as compared with a few weeks ago. In dry goods the decrease is quite percept- ible, and it is evident shat the fall trade has passed the most | animated point, so that a falling off may gw be expected. and on cotton in store ranoing Bait ngrade above or ba wth era ted Upham. ithama Noe Orleans, 7 R49 ined. Address ofiee, Philadelphia, ——————— THE FRACTIONAL CURRENCY. ‘There has been some talk about a scarcity of the smaller currency recently. The fifty cent stamps im | circulation are said to have been not so numerous ag Tequired by trade. The history of the matter is simply this:—The new issae of half-dollar currency waa ordered, and the older stamps, mutilated and other wise, are being redecmed as fast as they can convenb ently be. Therefore the banks, according to custom, 0. 2 do., | prefer to hold and receive only the new stamps, and de S07 S | Boteare to 4 mp get the old ones; so that a com scarcity of this sort of currency may be said to have arisen and in a measure to have embarrassed mecham- jes and storekeepers. The banks do not feel this strim- gency; neither, in reality, it is alleged by them, de | any other persons ‘Only the desire to hold curreucy prevents the banks from taking any more than they can help of the o!d scrip, and for this reason the impression has got abroad that there is, or has been, a scarcity of small currency.
