[Througt Robert Beats.j Bayard Taylor in his lectures classifies Schilleras first amongst the second rank of poets of the world, placing Homer, Dante, Goethe and Shakespeare at the head; so it may he said of Taylor himself, that he comes very near belng in the front rank of Ameri- cau poets. And itmay be said of him as he has said of Schiller, that he gains steadily in his approach to his ideal with each effort. The present volume contains things that have @ better chance for immortality tian anything be has previously written, because of their greater simplicity and stronger hold upon the heart. Talis baad has been ving exhibit ro. out the coun- try for several mouths past. The Commissioner ‘was € dently disposed to rake snort work of t terview. and asked what they bad to say McKay, ned to be Aboring under sary ent, replied in a load tone: aces, sir; and we want to You know our reeds, and cap give us what we want, sir!” ‘The Commissioner ent the interpreter short by saying be wanted tohear from the In- dians, when Dr. MeKay rising, and exhibit- ing considerable inuignation, sald, “Per. hays, sir, you are unaware of who we are We, sir, are the Warm Spring Iadians; the friends ‘and allies of the whites. Perhaps, sir, you have never heard that we foucnt your troops against Capta in the late Modoc campaign. Yes, we have grievances, and they must be re- dressed.” Tire Commis: asked where they bad been lately Dr. McK ave b have bee east, and we have t been (waving hts this country, sir. Com- missioner Smith told them that they would have to look to Congress for a redress of their grievances, and requested Dr. McKay to make a statement in writing, on which re- commendations to Congress could be made, Which the Jatter said he would do. PROSPECTS OF THE ENGLISH ARCTIC Ex- PEDITION.—Dr. Isaac J. Hayes, the Arctic explorer, thinks that the English ships Alert and Diseovery have fair prospects of success in their efforts to reach the Nortn Pole. Tne Pandora, which recently returned to Eng- land, found little ice in Baffin’; Ray. and Dr. Hayes thinks that a like open iou¢!- Uon will prevail in Smith's Sout and the adjacent waters. If such should be the case, the English ships, if they do nov sail toan open Polar Sea, will reach very high latt- tndes, and sledge expeditions ean be resorted to for further surveys. The English expedi- tion is splendidly equipped for this kind of service, Which has thus far proved very ef- fective in high latitudes. INCENDIARY FIRES IN GEORGIA.—The commissioner of agriculture for Georgia re- ports that durmg the past twelve months twenty-eight cotton-gin houses were de. stroyed by incendiary, and fifteen by acci- dental fires. This return is bad » but the-Savannah Morning News takes excep- tion to it, and shows by its files that from Ist of September, 1874, to Ist of September, 1875, reports were published of the burning of ninety-eight cetton-gin houses in Georgia. Jt is estimated that three fourths of the fires were the work of incendiaries. From the ist of September to the 34th of October instant, the News has chronicled the burning of Af teen additional gin houses. SENDING SHIPS OVERLAND.—it is a cari- ous fact, and one that speaks well for the re. vival of our long-lost and often-lamented American ship- building interests, that ships are now constructed on the Delaware and sent over the plains to the Pacific coast. This might be somewhat a paradox were it not explained that the ship yards in Phila- delphia build the hnlis of iron vessels tn pieces. which are taken in this shapa to the le coast per the Peunsylvania and Pa- cific railroads. ee ober gree ar they are t Logether and fin!
