“FINANCIAL AND COMMERCLL Sharp Advance in Union Pacifie—The Stock Market Irregular, GOLD 1141-4 A 114 5-8. Bag Paper 87.24—Money on Call Loans 2 1-2 and 3 Per Cent—Railway and Gov- ernment Bonds Firm. ‘THE FOREIGN MARKET DEPRESSED WALL Srrezr, Tavespar, Nov. 1l— P. Me. ‘The feature of the stock market to-day was the rapid advance of Union Pacific stock from the opening prico of 68% to 74. It reacted, however, at the close to 7134. Bumors were in circulation yesterday that the decision of the Supreme Court in the case of this company ‘versus the United States was already known to be in favor of the railroad; but deeming such a knowledge to ‘be highly improbable, if not impossible, wo refrained from alding their circulation, To day, however, these ‘fumors assumed the shape of positive assertion and found sufficient believers to cause the advance in price referred to, Of course this result has not been accom- ‘plished without a certain amount of manipulation, which was necessary to give character to the report; get it 1s beyond doubt that not a few have made haste to secure at least a portion of the anticipated further ise by buying stock at above 70. Perhaps tucir hopes may be realized; but there is no question as to tho party who has been the seller of the stock. The early advance in Union Pacific from 68% to 70 tended 4o harden the entire market, a few stocks making jon advance of from % tol per cent, while the re- mainder were merely firm; but with tho later advance to 74.and final decline to 71% the whole list became heavy, falling off from } to 144 per cen:, Pacific Mail early rose from 38% to 39%, but afterward reacted to 8934, at about which price most of the trading was done “ antil near the close, when it settled to 39, Lake Shore ‘opened at 61%, sold at 62%, and then remained steady uring tho greater part of tho day within a fraction of |, 62, finally selling at 6134. Ohios were active, tin Wom advance from 17% a 17% to 183, but closed at 17%. Northwest common opened at 3854, sold at 39 and closed at 88%. Hannibal and St. Joseph was largely dealt in at 23 a 23% a 22%. Michigan Central sold at 66% 0673, a 6634. Pacifle of Missouri, after selling from 143 up to 1534, declined to and closed at 1334. Erie was inactive at 1734 a17!¢ a17. Western Union showed no strength, with ‘sales at ,763{ a 76% a 7614. There seems to be a growing impression that with the large quantities of Western produco now on the way to the East by the water routes the rates of freight are likely to be of less consequence to the railroads during the coming winter than the want of business. A special meeting of the Stock Exchange was held a8 half-past eieven o'clock yesterday morning to take ac- tion on the reports of the Governing Committee on the charges of violation of the laws of the association here- tofore presented against & D. Carr, D, & Haviland and 8. N. Salomon. ‘The charges against Carr and Haviland ‘are that they had accepted from their principals less than the estab- lished rates of commission, The charges having been wi seine im both cases, the gentlemen were sus- nde Pete Salomon’s case was under the twentwth section of the constitution, which requires the expulsion of members who may be convicted belore the Governing Committee of “obvious fraud.” In May last Salomon failed under circumstances that give rise to doubts of his good faith, which doubts were strengthened by his conduct subsequent to his failure, The matter was re- ferred to aspecial committee, of which Mr. John B, Norris was chairman, aud who, after a careful investi- gation, recommended his expulsion under the law above mentioned. The report of the committee was unanimously adopted. PRODUCE EXCHANGE NOTES, The committee appointed by the members) of the Produce Exchange to revise the rules of the provision trade adjourned until next Monday at eleven o'clock, the time of some of the members being yesterday taken up by the proceedings in the cases before the Lard Com mittee. AS was predicted in yesterday’s Heratp, the cases od the shorts in the recent lard ‘‘corner”’ wero referred te the Board of Managers by the Complaint Committee, The Board of Managers meet to consider them at half- pastten this mornivg. Mr. Perry, in his defence, read at the meeting of the Complaint Committee yesterday, took exception to a decision by the Lard Committee because they never were vested with such powers as are needed to obtain evidence in claims for money damages. He urged that there were many sales equivalent to “wash” sales and that the settlement should be made on the basis of legitimate value, wholly disconnected from artificial value which a ay be put upon it by the older of the entire stock. therefore, desired that the case should be given to the’ Arbitration Committee, He’ stated to a Heravp reporter after the meqting that he ‘was perfectly willing to stand whatever damages provided a fair price could be agreed upon, He said ‘that somewhere between 13}¢ and 14 centa right figures.
