L, Nov. 11, 1875, ™ River for New ‘The steamer Providence, from Fall ‘York, waited at Newport last night until half-past eleven o'clock and then started out. When off Point Judith-she was struck by @ sea which barst in her bulk- ‘head,*back of the wheelhouse, Jetting in considerable watér and causing alarm to the passengers, The steamer ‘was put about and returned to Fall River, STATEMENT OF A PASSENGER. A passenger on the Providence, who arrived last night, tells the following story:— Iwas & passenger on the Providence, from Fall River to New York. We left Fall River about nine o'clock, Wednesday night, with comparatively few passengers—I should imagine about 150 to 200. The weather was dark and rainy and blowing fresh, with the wind from the southeast. We made Newport at the usual time, and as the weather was bad the boat jay there till the weather began to clear up. About midnight it looked more favorable, and we pushed out. We proceeded along to Point Judith without anything of note, the steamer rolling considerably and sea striking her occasionally somewhat heavily, which alarmed naes many of the passengers, both men and PROVIDENCE. women, Many thought it prudent not to retire. The women shrieked, and eee sengers who had been in bed rushed into the Just as they stood, nightshirts being the prevailing attire. ‘At this time an officer of the Providence, whom I took for the chiet mate, came hurriedly into the saloon, evi- dently greatly excited, and the passengers, notably the women, rushed to him asking him if there was any danger, to which he replied ina loud and excited man- ner, 2 “por ON YOUR Live PRESERVERS !”” This ‘he repeated several times and a screech went through the saloon of the ship, At this moment the stewards came rushing egy the saloons, and, with their clenched fists, breaking the ground glass panels in the stateroom doors and kicking in the pazuis with their boots, calling out “HURRY ON DECK! SHIP 18 SINKING |’? The majority of these rooms were unoccupied, and this proceeding augmented the prevailing terror. 1 rushed on deck, and found thirty or forty passengers on the after deck, all adjusting their life preservers, and expecting the ship to founder every minute, In the saloon men and women were seen praying in every direction, Great guietude prevailed at this time among the female portion of the passengers. Some of the women lay on the sofus and setteesin a swoon, I spoke to several, tellmg them to come near the cabin doors 80 ag to be ready to get into the sea when the ship sunk, so as not to be taken down with lower wooden the vessel; but, as mony were _ paralyzed with fear, they could net move. After the stewards had finshed their door breaking and cries of “SHE 18 GOING UNDER!” they equipped themselves with life preservers. I then ‘Went ait to the boats, but found no one near themor any attempt being made to clear them away. I sung qui, *Where’s the Captain?” and one of the stewards said, ‘‘He’s either looking after the steering or the leak.” The chief steward, I think it was, gave me his knifeand I cleared away the boats, cutting away the tasnings from the ringbolts in the deck. I saw the plugs of the boats were all right, and . AWAITED DEVELOPMENTS, I then looked over the side and saw that the vessel ‘was not sinking, as she was still high out of the water. I then went to the saloon aud said to the women who were there, “I don’t believe a soul will be lost; there are four beats, and you stop near the cabin door and you sball be put into the boats, before any men.” I then went on deck and suw that we were maxing good headway, amd the ship looked as buoyant as before, I now began to think we were MORE FRIGHTENED THAN HURT, and I went down in the hold to find out how much water there was inher. I saw at a glance that there ‘was not sufficient to sink us. In the ssloon we had \dhought that the lower hold was filled with water, owing to our, seemg ft swashing from side to side by the gas lights. At this time the crew were taking mat- tresses wherever they could find them to stop the sea from pouring in. I then saw one of the engineers, and he told me, in reply to a question, that the compart: ‘ments were closed and the water confined to the mid- ship section. 1 went to the saloon and called out to the passengers, “WE ARE NOT GOING TO SINK!?? This announcement caused but little emotion, the ple being, as a rule, 60 prostrated by the emotions ey had just gone through. I then went to the boats again to make sure that they were ready for launching, but found that two of the lash- ings had net been cut by me. While so epgaged an officer came up to me and abused me, and wanted to now whatin-———I had to do with the boat, and to comg away from there at unce. By thie time we were turned round, heading for New- port, running under the land and in comparatively imooth water. We reached Newport at five A. M. to- day and the company sent us on by the train to Boston, and promptly refunded us our money and paid for our passage to New York. “BE NO MORE OFFICER OF MINE.” Mayor Crevelling, of Trenton, N.
