NEW YORK HERALD, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1875.—TRIPLE SHEET. “FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks a Trifle Stronger—Sharp Engineer- ing Among the “Bulls.” Rag Paper 86.77—Money on Call Easy at 2 Per Cent—Railroad Bonds Firm, The Panama and Pacific Mail ; Companies. Wau granny} Frivay, Nov. 5—6 P. M. The stock market opened weak and within the first half hour of business declined trom 3 to }g per cent below the closing prices of last night. Thereatter it remained in a feverish and uncertain condition until past midday, It appears that the sharp decline of yes- terday in the bonds and stocks of Union Pacific in- duced fears that it would endanger the standing of certain loans upon the same, and hence it became im- perative that the nominal quotations should be re- turned to the points from which they had broken. The sinking fund bonds were therefore taken in hand at an early hour and gradually advanced from 81 to 83, with & subsequent jump to 84 and 85—a comparatively sate and easy undertaking if it is claimed that the stock bas any value, After the bonds reached 84 the stock, whicn had before fluctuated from 62% w 63% a 624 a 63 a 62%, was rapidly moved up to 65 and closed with that bid, So far from the prices of these securities having been untavorably affected by the rumors concerning an adverse decision by the Supreme Court in the company’s suit it ts more likely that average operators reasoned that any fore- kuowledge of the kind was an impossibility and that, therefore, they were much more likely to have been purchasers than sellers of the stock at the decline, It is noticeable that there were over 13,000 shares traded in yesterday, against 5,000 shares to-day, PACIFIC MAIL opened at 38, and after a decline to 3734, fluctuated be- tween 3844 a 8734 a 38, until the movement in Union Pacitle above took place, when it advanced to and closed at 39. Concerning this company we now have authority for confirming the rumors referred to yeste! day, to wit:—That the Panama Railroad has given the required notice to the Pacific Mail Company that the tontract recently made between the two companies must terminate at the expiration of the noticed time— ninety days—and further, that it ts the intention of the Panama Company hereafter to run its own line of Steamers between New York and Aspinwall and Panama and San Francisco, It is also stated that the notice from the Panama Company contained a demand upon the Steamship Company, the nature of which we are only permitted to guess, from the fact that the Steamship Company is largely in arrears ir its pay- ments of the railroads proportion of the traffic earn- ings for the past four months. TUX GENERAL MARKET, ag before stated, was barely steady at the decline of yesterday until after the movements in Union Pacific and Pacitic Mail above described, when the ‘bulls,’’ seeming to regain courage, commenced to hoop’? the entire list and succeeded in establishing at the close fn average advance over lust night and in frightening the few “bears’’ who had increased their sales during the morning's dulness into buying, thus giving to the market an apparently firm close. Western Union was the single exception to the weakness of the morning hours, remaining firm at 7534 a 76, and finally closing at 76z; yet when it is remembered that this stock pays quarterly dividends of two percent its present price, When compared with the prices of some of the railroad stocks which pay none and show no prospect of paying any, cannot be con- sidered a8 an exhibition of much strength, The fact illustrates how fictitious are the present values sought to be established by speculation, Lake Shore opened at 60% and sold at 60% a 60% a 60%; 0602, u 607% a 605;, and then spurted to 6134, with final sales at 682¢ and more offered at the price. The North Western und St, Paul stocks were weak in the carly trade, but under the generally “better”? feeling at the close recovered 1 and % per cent, respec- tively, {rom their lowest sales, Erie was quiet, only fluctuating between 1734 1701744 417%. The mar- ket as a rule closed firm at about the highest prices of the day. ADVANCE AND DECLINE. Fripay, Nov, 5—6 P. M. | The trade movement, though interrupted somewhat | | by the elections and the holiday connected therowith, | | \ | has, nevertheless, been pretty free during the week, and particularly when the week is taken as a whole, In | some departments there has been a very percoptible falling off in the transactions, but in others a more ac- | tive demand has obtained, so that, taken altogether, | the week has prob- ably been about as large as it was | last week, As regards the state of the markets, there | | has occurred compuratively little change, save in a few | | excoptional cases, The export movement in the lead- | ing commodities has not been so active as might have been expected or desired, and this has been especially noticeable in breadstuils, the markets for which have tended tn favor of the buyers nearly all the week, while | in some cases prices have materially declined. In the letter he claims that the company owes, including supplies on hand, $1,000,000 more than last February; that the company is run in the inter- est of the Overland Railroad and not of the stockhold- | ers, and that little is known about the real manage- ment of affairs by the home office. Mr. Hatch states that the company’s debt is upward of $2,000,000. It appears that the rumor which prevailed yesterday tothe.effect that the Panama Company would carry out the plan heretofore announced, of substituting ita own steamers for those of the Pacitic Mail, is likely te be verified. Mr. Park, President of the Panama Com- pany, has sent a letter to President Dillon, of the Pa- citic Mail, announcing that the contract between the two companies must end within ninety days, It 1s un~ derstood that negotiations are now on foot to secure steamers to take the pisce of those now being run im the interest of the Pacific Mail, and a lively fignt be- tween the two corporations may be looked forward to. MISSOURI PACIPIC STOCKHOLDERS. Several Missour: Pacitlc stockholders, in continua- tion of the previous day’s session, met'at No. 25 Will- jam street, yesterday, Mr, Jenkins Van Schaick pre- siding, A plan of action, embraced in a set of resolu- tions, was presented by Mr. N. A. Coudrey and adopted after some brief comment. The preamble sets forth that, since the Atlantic and Pacitic Company, the lessee of the Missouri Pacific has, in open Court, con- fessed its inability to keep its contracts, since the county of St” Louis asserts that’ great ir- regularities on the part of the lessee ex- ist in placing mortgago liens upon the property of the Missouri Pucitlc Company, and since | the present directors.are said to have a merely noml- nal interest m the road as shareholders, all of which circumstances tend to depreciate the real and market value of the stock, resolutions be adopted asking the present directors’ to resign and appointing a commit. tee to “take all proper and reasonable steps’’ to cancel the lease and to elect successors to the present direc: tory. These resolutions were signed Ls Ae a dozen persons, representing 17,000 shares of Missouri Pacifia stock. ‘The names of the committee appointed are Messrs. N. A. Coudrey, Jacob Cromwell, Peter Marié, A. W. Shepherd, George R. Fearing, F. A. Otis and W. H. Movell, Tne meeting adjourned subject to the call of the chair, Before adjourning the chairman was authorized to call on the present management for @ list of the shareholders of record, MINING MATTERS. The great Virginia City fire was kept out of the miaes by heavy iron doors at the mouths of the shatts. ‘The report that no ore would be hoisted before next spring has been contradicted. Constant pumping has reduced the water in the mines, and a large force is | empioyed clearing away the burned machinery and débris, No fire entored any of the shafty and the ore breasts are uninjured, RECENT FAILURES. The most significant failure of the week is that ef Lewis J. Phillips, Willis & Co., dealers in hats, caps and furs, in Greene street, Mr. Phillips has been for some titue & prominent operator in real estate. Three yeurs ago he was supposed to bea wealthy man, and up to a recent period it was believed that his solvency ‘was beyond question, His own liabilities and those of the firm are supposed to be pretty heavy, though the amount is not yet known, He has assigned to Fred erick Lewis. Another failure, which has caused a great deal of comment, is that of Cahm, Salomon & Fribourg, shirt | manufacturers of White street. The house has ag | signed to T. D, Adams, of H. B. Claflin & Co, and Solomon Moses, of Moses, Blum & Weal. A not unexpected failure was that of W. J. Schloss & Co,, cloth jovbers, whose creditors are numerous, though not sor large amounts, Faxon, Tibbets & Co., auction boot and shoe house, have been compelled to succumb to the pressure of thé times, Richard Worthington & Co., Canadian booksellers, at 750 Broadway, bave stopped payment, owing a deal of money. ‘They had much trouble with the govern- ment some years ago on charges of importing books from Canada without paying duty, Vanderlip & Taylor, Who have made a general assigne ment to A. B, Capwell, are understood to be indorsers | 1or Union Adams, who failed some time ago, and theiz | troubles are probably due to that fact, Mr. Stanton, the assignee of Messrs, S. B. Potter & Co,, butter and cheese dealers, of No, 73 Broad street | has announcod that a meeting, of the creditors will | take place next Tuesday, at noon, in the office of the | firm, when the statement of their assets and liabilities will be made pablic, Henrich Imborst, who lately assigned to 0. T. Ack- ley, has obligations ‘amounting to about $66,000. His assets are stated to be $24,145 17, Gerry, Tilton & Colwell, dealers in iron, of No. Rector’ street, yesterday mado an assignment to Ed- ward R.
