NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1875.-TRIPLE SHEET. —_—— FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Review of the Week---The Crop Mo ment and its Lessons. THE SPECULATION IN STOCKS. Gold Exchange, Government, Railway and State Bonds—Pailures of the Year. Wat Srexer, } Sunpay, Oct. 24, 1875. ‘The commercial situation during the past week was without change. As in former weeks the principal business im dry goods has been transacted through the forced sale—that, too, of the most staple articles—and by a considerable reduction in prices, thus inducing a sort of speculative movement, or an overbuyipg on the part of the few who are able. ‘This, however, in turn Feacts to the detriment of the general trade. To such @n extent have these forced sales been made this seaspn that now, as we are informed, there is scarcely an arti. cle of staple goods which is not selling below the actual cost of production. Such a state of affairs, especially in view of the greatly decreased production and impor, tations of the season, does not indicate that natural and healthy demand for which we had hoped. The grain, produce and general merchandise markets, aside from speculative influences, have also been tame, with a tendency toward lower prices. In a word, disguise it a8 we may, business, if not stagnant, is slow and unsat- isfactory. Why does such a condition exist after two years of rest, which should have been years of liqui- dation? Much stress continues to be laid upon AN ANTICIPATED AOTIVE MOVEMENT and export demand for the large crops of the West. These hopes may yet be realized, but as no possible good can come from self-deception upon a matter of such vital importance, we below present some facts which seem to bear directly upon the general prosperity of the country and especially upon the interest of trans- portation companies. The same bright promises were indulged im one year ago regarding the crop of 1874, but they failed im fulfulment because our farmers and speculators would not, until too late, accept a price at which our wheat could be exported; so that while Great Britain tor the year between September, 1874, and September, 1875, imported over 2,000,000 cwt. more of wheat than in the twelve preceding months, the Atlantic ports of the United States during the same time decreased their exports about forty-five per cent. At one time it was thought that France would be short of wheat this year, but as we readin the Loudon papers of liberal importations from that country itseems likely that Great Britain again is to be the only buyer of wheat. If so the following facts are of importance :— THE MOVEMENTS OF WHEAT toward Great Britain from September 1 to October 2 compare as follows:— 1874, 1875. Imports into the United King- dom, ews. 4,720,393 7,840,733 Afloat, bound to the Uniied Kingdom, quarters, . 915,000 1,110,000 Both reduced to bushels, totals. 15,170,655 21,867,890 Increase for 1875, bushel ob ecccccccce 6,607,285 ‘The exports from New York compure as follows:— 1874. 1875. August 14 to Oct. 2, bushels... 6,750,300 4,775,300 Decrease, bushe! cae 975,000 Thus, while Great Britain actually imported and had afloat 6,697,235 bushels more than at the corresponding time last year, the Atlantic ports—accepting New York as the criterion—had exported about 1,000,000 bushels less, It has been estimated that Great Bpjtam would be compelled to import during the year, from Septem- ber 1, some 70,000,000 cwts. of wheat. If this estimate is correct it seems she has nearly twenty per cent of the total quantity in sight within the first month. It may here be remarked that the exports from New York since October 2 to date show but a trifling decrease from those of last year, The following were the relative prices of wheat and corn in Liverpool and New York at the respective Periods, to wit:— —Uctober 23,— 1874. 1875. Liverpool—Red winter wheat, per cental. os seeeee 88. 10d, 108, Od. New York—No. 2 Chicago wheat, per bushel, gold ys «+ 96%. $1 089% Liverpool—Corn, per quarter........ 358. 3d. 208. 6d. New York—Coru, per bushel, gold... 80c. 6le. ‘The prices in New York are relatively about the same with Liverpool as one year ago, The quantity in Now ‘York and moving toward it at the respective dates com- are as follows :— —October 17, 1874. 1875. Instore in New York and Brooklyn, shels. 2,431,247 2,547,512 Shipments on the lakes. 1,871,434 1,989,393 Shipments on the canals, 1,885,000 1,805,659 Shipments on the railroads. 89,471 "308,534 Total bushels. 6,227,162 6,651,008 ‘The foregoing figures show that, unless there shall be s more active export movement, the quantity on hand in New York at the close of inland navigation will be even larger than last year. All the facts taken to- gether indicate that we ure likely to repeat the folly of last year, and again hold a good proportion of our crops for the nourishment of rats. They also suggest ‘n answer to the questions propounded heretofore, PAPER MOXEY—UNEXPORTABLE MONKY.”” We have not liquidated, but have merely carried our load of debts by the use of broken “promises to pay.”” They teach the lesson that our trouble is debt and a Stagnation of the abundant capital wherewith we might pay our obligations—stagnation, not of “paper capital,”” but of the real capital of the country—the productions Of the soil, which, but for the great plethora of paper- made “money” by legislative enactment would be forced {nto circulation and compelled to pay tribute to our railroads and marine, thus furnishing employment to the laborer, giving new life to every branch of trade, and finally, when it has reached Europe, performing its last duty to us in liquidating, at & price, a large proportion of our indebtedness, It re- quires no argument at this late day to demonstrate that if one year ago gold had been the money of the country the large surplus wheat crop of 1874 could not bave remained idle and of no more use to us than if it never had been raised, If the question had deen whether to ship money (gold) or wheat, Wheat would have gone, aud the farmer would have derived yommensurate benefit. Our paper money no longer ‘ends to give life and activity to trade, but from its very “unexportable” character creates Stagnation and yonverts our surplus products into the “chips” of spee- alators, Speculation, which is the bane of every legiti- mate interest, receives its nourishment from that which is poison to honest labor—a local and “unexport- ble’? money. THE STOCK MARKET, Outside of the movements in Lake Shore, Pacific Mail and the continued decline of Pacific of Missouri, Stocks fluctuated during the week scarcely more than 1s usual fora broker's market. Various reports have been put in circulation concerning Lake Shore and Pacific Mail to account for the rapid advance of each, but it now seems clear that the movement in each was based chiefly upon the unsuspected large short interest, Teaching, it 1s now estimated, to 76,000 shares iu Lake Shore aod 60,000 in Pacific Mail. Western Union rose from 1754 to 77, Northwest common trom 343; to 375 Preferred froin 48 to 52, St. Paul from 32 to 3534, pro- ferred from 613, to 6334, New Jersey Central from 103% to 106 and Michigan Central from 573, to 0X. New York Central rose from 102% to 105, Union Pacific, after sell- ing down to 66\;, advanced to 68. Ohios, Hannibal And St, Joseph, Erie, C., C, and I. C, and Atlantic and Pacific Telograph advanced trom 1 to 3% per cent from the lowest point, The weak spots of the market were {nots Contral and Missouri Pacitic, the former declif ing from 96 to 8814 and the latter from 16% to 74g. The decrease in the eurnings of the last named road from January 1 to October 14, 1875, 18 reported at $602,096, While a rose-colored hue is for the moment being given 40 the speculative market, und journals which only two or three weeks ago were recording the continued symp- toms of commercial paralysis have suddenly discovered few and more encouraging features that invite public couddence, the community at large will do well to study the arithmetic of failures and watch the di ly record at home and abroad of the decline of old and well known Grins, Wo already count up $131,000,000 representing the wiping out process since January 1, 1875—only nine mouths, Last year for the same period it was $116,00,000, Truc, many of these disasters are the 4 per cent, The supply, however, was abundant at fesult of previous misiortunes; but wnen and where is | this tad procession, the outcrop of 1873, tocnd? ‘The following were the CLOSING PRICES—-3 P. The foreign commerce of the port for the week was as foliows:—General merchandise imports, including dry goods, $3,876,055; produce exports, $6,460,834; specie exports, $226,550. The total imports of mer- chandise at the port since January 1, this year, amount to $271,945,981, against $327,415,249 for the correspond- ing period in 1874 and $333,929,923 in 1873. The total exports of produce since January 1, this year, are $201,618,541, against $235,051,902 in 1874 and $238,002,656 in 1873, The total exports of specie since January 1, this year, are$64, 166,263, against $44,347,929 in 1874 und $42,770,262 in 1873, THR MONKEY MARKET. The money market was somewhat firmer than last week, the rates for call loans at the Stock Exchange having beon 3.0334 per cent, with a few exceptions at these rates, Prime commercial paper was quoted at 6 a7 per cent { rime names, with a fair business do- ing. ‘Tho foreign exchanges were weak for a time, but toward the close were firmer on the decline in gold and the easier rates for gold loans, The nominal rates were advanced from 4.7714 and 4.81 to 4.7959 and 4.84 for long and demand sterling bills respectively. The Bank of England report, on Thursday, showed a decline of £945,000 in bullion for the week, and the minimum discount rate was advanced to 4 per cent from. 344, the previous figure. The Bank of France gained 1,463,000 franes in specie. COINS AND BULLION, ‘The following were last quotations in gold for coins and bullion:— Buying. Selling. The price de- clined from 116% to 11444, with a recovery of but/1¢ per cent at the close. Cash gold was easier, and the borrowing rate fell off from 3% to 1-64 perdiem. It is said that some of the large operators have closed out their interest and are awaiting another opportunity to bull the commodity at yet lower prices, The prepay- ment of the $12,000,000 gold interest without rebate will commence according to announcement to-morrow (Monday). The customs receipts of the month to date amount to $8,546,389, GOVERNMENT BONDS were somewhat less active and lower, in sympathy with gold, Closing prices in London were as follows: Fine gold bars. Oct. 8. Oct. 15, Oct, 23, 106% 104 10314 107% 1074 10Tis ies (EH 104g 1043; 10455 10334 10355 STAT BONDS. ‘These, especially in South Carolina's, Texas, Florida's and Virginia's, show continued firmness, The consols | of the former issue are better by 1 per cent, Tennes- see's were weaker, on prospects of a less favorable ar- Tangement for the payment of its interest, Louisiana | bonds are in fair request by her own people, On the action of the Legislatures of the Southern States will naturally depend the strength of their respective se- curities, and the ability to market the same in this locality. RAILROAD BONDS. Railroad bonds have been dealt in toa moderate ex- tent only, and prices have not kept pace with the ad- vance in stocks. Several of the popular issues of bonds which are usually bought and soid to m considerable exteut on speculation have been nearly nogiected, and their prices are lower than a few weeks ago. Among these are the Chicago and Northwostern geld bonds and some of the Central Pacifle issues, Ohio and Mis- sissippi bonds are selling at comparatively low prices, although the dbsence of full information as to the com. puny’s wflairs down to alate dato prevents the public from forming «correct estimate of the value of these securities, The bonds of the Pacific of Missouri have not been much dealt in during the late extraordinary de- cline in the stock, SECURITIES AT AUCTION. ‘The following sales were made at auction yesterday :— $500 U. $. 6 per cent coupon bond of 1881, Oregon war debt, 1165. | $1,000 Hannioal and St. Joseph R.
