8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERC The Stock Market Irregular and Spasmodie, with One or Two Securities Firm. GOLD 1157-8 A 116 1-8./| Bag Money Worth 86.11—The Treasury Sale— Rise in the English Bank Rate— Governments Steady. Waa Sruzsr, } Tuurspay, Oct, 21—0 P.M. If the stock market to-day is carefully analyzed and compared with recent figures it will be found that the ebief activity and strength are represented by Lake Bhore, of which 116,000 shares changed bands, with ‘@p advance from 663, to 6044 and the closing price at 69%. How much of this large business is legitimate and how moch is the result of a “washing” provess it 4g impossible to say, but that it was not an entirely matural improvefhent ts attested by the fact that it failed to communicate sympathy to the rest of the | followed by a corre- of strength Im other stocks the average decline was about equal to the average advance. Even Pacifie Mail, ef which some 45,000 stares were sold between 3934 and 39, receded atthe end to 393%, Western Union improved to 16%, after opening sales et 75% and closed at 755, Ohio and Mississippi became suddenly active, and fluctuated widely, receding from 16%. to 46, then moving up to175¢, and, at the Inst, selling off again to 16%. Northwest common ranged from market and was nob sponding exhibition 85% to 80% and closed at 35%. ‘Tho preferred | stock rose to 60%, after gales at 49%. Michigan | ¢. Central advanced from 68 to 593g and closed at 68% bid and offered at 59, St. Paul to 83%, preferred to 6244, and Erie to 16. There was a reaction | of % to %% per cent in the final dealings. Union Pacific was firm at 67% a 68. The earnings of the company are reported large, both in freight and passengers, Missouri Pacific sold at 13 and afterward down to 11, closing at this price. The forth- coming report of the committee will, it is said, be damaging in character, and some of its former friends are predicting lower prices. The management cer- tainly have agood deal to answer for. Atlantic and Pacific preferred, the lessor of the Missouri Pacific, de- elined to 5. The dividend paying securities like New ‘York Central, Delaware and Lackawanna, Rock Island, ‘New Jersey Central and others show both steadiness ‘and strength, and are not likely to be sacrificed to the ‘temptations of any such market as has been made for certain “fancies” during the last week. It is possible that when the revival of trade is fairly under way a | real and healthy influence will be felt by all railways, East and West, but until then it is the safest policy of ‘tbe outside operator to ‘stand from under.’” THE SALES TO-DAY. ‘The transactions on the Stock Exchange to-day ag- | @regated 266,900 shares, which among active stocks ‘were divided as follows:—New York and Hudson, €90; Erie, 9,300; Lake Shore, 116,100; Cleveland and | Pittsburg, 300; Northwestern, 14,100; do. preferred, 990; Rock Isiand, 700; Pacific Mail, 45,100; St Paul, 8,800; do. preferred, 1,000; Ohios, 25,700; Western ‘Union, 85,127; Union Pacific, 800; Panama, 200; Micht- gan Central, 1,935, OPENING, HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES. SOME PACTS ABOUT THE STERLING LOAN ON PACIFIC MAIL STOCK—THE STOCKWELL &ET~ TLEMENT AND A PEOMISED STATEMENT FROM may, 1873—a ‘‘BULL” MARKET, WITH PHILA~ DELPHIANS PAYING THE PIPER ‘Tho statement made exclusively in these Notes of yesterday of the ramor that the Pacific Maii Steamship: Company had “negotiated a loan with Brown Brothers: & Co. for £100,000 sterling on their stock”? was the subject of much comment in the brokers’ offices yes- terday, many designating the report as a canard & troix becs, @ “mare’s nest,” &o. It now seems, however, that the only tmaccuracy was the statement that the’ Joan was made on the company’s stock, instead of stock of the-company (im private hands), and that the amount of the sterling loan should have been £200,000, instead of £100,000. An evening paper’ says:—'The immediate cause of the decline in sterling, yesterday was the sale of a large amount by leading bankers on an exchange transaction covering £200,000. It was rumored also that the holders of the Pacific Maid stock borrowed a large amount of exchange to get time money.” I {sno uncommon affair tn GREAT STOCK MOVEMENTS for large loans to be made in the mannor indicated; be~ sides, it shows great shrewdness in the Pacific Maid “bulla” to have negotiated exchange. If they sold their gold on Wednesday at 116}¢ and can cover their sterling bills within sixty days ata profit, as is most likely to be the case when the cotton and wheat crops are moving Europeward, exchange will tend down- ward, and they will have the use of the money, for their great operations, for nothing! The determined demand of the Heratp upon the railroad aud other corporations for a monthly or quar- feny, statement of their business seems katy at length to mect with some response. It the’ yin Mail directors will to-morrow issue a report an@ statement which shall be more than fragment ~ The document, it is believed, will reveal THX REAL CONDITION OF THE COMPANY, as it will give the receipts and expenditures of the o ion since the Stockwell administration went out and the Hatch management went in, If the com-' y—as is now claimed by its friends—has since May, Teng va bailt d equipped eloven new iron steamers and out of the regen itis time the public and Tid mockhowdars should be properly aware of the fact. Mr. & Scott, the Vice President of the com- pany, sails for Europo to-morrow, yt is supposed to THE STOCKWELL NRGOTIATH There seems to be no question that thet tormer Presi- dent has made overtures to the Cgriget wo pay a large sum of money for a release from vexatious litiga- tion on the part of Pacific Mail directors, If Stockwell va King, the famous lobbyist, may bo in order PUTLADELPHIANS “SHORT’'0F LAKE SHORE. As indicated in this column, the new pool tormed im Lake Shore and Western Union was ready for work. z showed itself yesterday and sent prices up “boom- ” gg in the ‘‘bull’’ times previous to the panic of 1, Certain speculators of the Quaker City—. one of whom is said to be tho brother o! the president of one of our bankrupt raib have been heavily “short” of Lake Shore Western Union, and yesterday one house bought in 18,000 shares of stock for their account alone, and it is said they have yet a short line of 10,000 shares to cover. Names were freely used in Wall street among the brokers, but for obvious reasons they are omitted here, TWO SMALL FAILORES took place in the Stock Exchange, on account of the great rise in Lake Shore. The mania for speculation seems again to be revived, and the rise in Lake Shore isan example, as in the case of Union Pacific, Many persons who would not buy at 52 were free purchasers. at 59 and 60 yesterday. The soundest advice to men of little means is to let THE TITANS OF SPROULATI fight their own butties and not aid ieth by throwi: in slender purses as prizes for the victors on the feld Mammon. BUTTERICK & CO.’3 AFFAIRS. The statement mado in yesterday’s Huraup to the effect that E, Butterick & Co., fashion publishers and pattern manufacturers, had failed, isincorreck Ibis true that the firm has been somewhat embarrassed through the failure of a large number of agents to meet their obligations at the appointed time and by reasom of beavy and unusual expenses incurred during the past two years A — house aan opened some time ago Londen, having only recently become self- pets ring absorbed an immense amount of capital The lishment of a printing office with ten or twelve largo e publication of a lit paver were also severe drains upon the resources of Tt is ‘now stated that time alone is required to meet ot all obli- gations, and that a compromise sufficiently formal to be considered lasting and conclustve was yesterday arrived at with the principal creditors, The business will go om ag before, and ali claims be justly and amicably settled. THE CLEWS FAILURE. ‘Tho examination Into the afairsofHenry Clews & Co. by Mr. Lees, before Edward Ketchum, Register in Bankruptcy, No, 139 Fulton street, which was set down for yesterday at two P.
