POUR MILE HEATS. ‘The third race was the great feature of the day, being four-mile heats, an event that 1s always porine with Baltimoreans. Three horses came to the post, ‘These were H. P. McGrath’s bay colt Auron Pennington, by Tipperary, , dam Luey Fowler, 4 years old, carrying K. Lawrence's bay horse Shylock, by Lexington, dam Edith, aged, 118 Ibs., and John Coffee's brown filly Nettie Norton, by Leamington, dam Long Nine, 4 years old, 105 Ibs.’ Aaron Pennington was the favorite, selling for $1,000: Shylock, $210, and Nettie Norton, $220. THE RACE. First Heat.—Nettie Norton took the lead, Shylock second, Aaron Pennington third. Going around the turn Nettie Norton opened a gap of five lengths, Shy- Jock five length ahead of Pennington. At the quarter pole Nettie Norton was eight lengths in advance of Shy- Jock, the latter about the same distance ahead of Aaron Pennington. The horses ran down the backstretch in ‘the same order, but when they came to the three-quar- ter pole Nettie Norton was a dozen lengths abead of Shylock, the latter six lengths in ad- vance of Pennington. When Nettie Norton the stand at the end of the first mile she was fifty yards abead of Shylock, the latter ten lengths tm advance of Pennington. The time of the mile was 1:55, There was an increase of daylight between Nettie Norton and Shylock while going around | ‘the upper turn, and Pennington closed on the latter, At the quarter pole Nettie led eighty yards, Shylock three lengths ahead of Penuington. “When Nettie passed the haif-mile pole she was still eighty yards in mt, and the others as they passed the pole were head and head. There was little or no change arouna the lower turn, but when the horses came up quarters stretch they closed some of the daylight, Net- tie Jed at the stand at the finish of the second mile fifty yarde. The time of the mile was 1:47:4 and the two miles 3:43. Pennington and Shylock were head and head at this time. Nettie again opened the gap as she Fan around the upper turn and Pennington appeared to | be losing his action. At the quarter pole Nettie was more than fifty yards in front, the other two being at that time greatly forced in the endeavor to close on the filly. They moved up gradually on the backstretch and around the lower turn. Evans having taken pull on Nettie at the forty ahead, and then com away again she was ‘seventy yards in front of Shylock when the stand, making three miles in. 6:96, The third mile was run’ in 1:53. | A shout was then raised that Nettie Norton would dis- tance the other two, and betg of 100 to 75 were offe ‘on that result, without ers. Shouts and ¢ were given for Nettie in the field and on the sta Swim was whipping and spurring Aaron Pennington | Without effect, while Heyward was using every rsuasive to urge Shylock along. ‘The filiy ‘ept up a long slow stride, bat gradually increased tbe distance between herself and her followers, and, as she entered the homestretch, it was evident she would distance both her antagonists in the race. Evans then ut on the steam to make the thing more sure, and he Kades Nettie Norton a winner of the face and first ‘and second moneys, which amounted to $2,800 in all. Shylock and Aaron Pennington were close together at the finish, the former in front and about thirty yards outside the distance flag. Time of the four miles, 7:33 This abrupt termination of the great four-mile heat event closed te racing for the day. SUMMARY. Barrimone, Md., Oct. 1875.—Tamp Day or THE Faw.
