FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, A Firm but Dull Stock Market---The Bank Statement. LARGE DECREASE IN THE RESERVE, Gold Steady at 116 3-4 a 117 a 116 7-8—Money on Call 2and 2 1-2 Per Cent—Rag Currency Worth 85,57, WALL bay Sarcrpay, Och 16—6 P, M. ‘The general aspect of the stock market to-day was ‘one of firmness, yet not indicative of a maintenance of present strength, inasmuch as there is an absence both of confidence and support. The condition, compared with that which prevailed a few days ago, is only ebanged inthe fact that those who were bears then have become bulls, while those who were bulls have quietly ranged themselves on tho short side. The situ, ation is not an unexpected one to those familiar with the devious ways of Wall street, and is, therefore, chiefly surprising to the few who were induced to take ventures on the adroitly circulated ‘point’? that stocks wero about to advance and pay a profit to early investors. ‘There is really nothing in the market, however, to en- courage the belief that we have entered on a campaign ‘that will last more than a weck at the outside calcula- tion, Good railway bonds and other dividend paying securities are not likely to show a material decline while money is cheap and abundant, and public fainh will pin itself to this class of investments; but for the so-called ‘fancies’? there 1s little hope until an increase of trade augments railway earnings and enables these corporations to show practical evidences of recovery from the disasters by which they have been beset, ‘THe STOCK MARKET. Prices opened with but few changes, and by noon an advance was established ranging from to 1% per cent, Michigan Central being exceptionally strong and Missouri Pacific exceptionally weak, The principal business was done in Lake Shore and Western Union. The former rose from 5434 to 643%, but receded to 54% atthe close. The latter sold at 745; a 747%, with the last sale at 74%. Ohio and Mississipp! moved up from 1634 to 17}, but ended at 165, Pacific of Missouri, after opening at 16, declined to 15, reacted to 1534 and closed at 1534, with soveral indications of further firm- ness, Erie was weak, receding from 16%¢ to 157%. ‘The statement of Solicitor Morris is supposed to be pub- lished in London and to account for the lower price established there. Union Pacific advanced from 665% 3634 0 36% 03635. Michigan Central gained % por ent. The other changes are unimportant. THE SALES TO-DAY. ‘The transactions on the Stock Exchange to-day aggre- gated 103,200 shares, and were divided among active stocks as follows:—New York Central and Hudson, 175; Erie, 8,200; Lake Shore, 47,100; Northwest- ern, 6,100; Rock Island, 650; Pacific Mail, 9,450; St. Paul, 2,600; do., preferred, 1,200; Ohio, 8,150; West- ern Union, 17,905; Wabash, 500; Union Pacific, 1,400; ©, C. & 1.
