FINANCIAL’ AND COMMERCIAL, Stocks a Trifle More Active and Higher—Pa- cific Mail Again in the Speculative Front. GOLD STRONG AT 1163-4 A 117. Money Easy and Good Investment Securities Firm—Washington and London Advices, Wat Sraner, TwEspAY, Sept, 28—6 P. M. ‘The stock market to-day was active, stronger and for the moment encouraging, While the principal buying was confined to a few parties the sympathy thereby communicated to the general list of securities was at once decided and leaves little doubt that whenever a real bull movement commences the advance will enlist the co-operation of outside purchasers. Until the sup- port of the latter class is obtained, however, there is ‘20 reason to expect under present conditions long con- tinued Grmness, The street is too poor to sustain the market without extraneous help, There is no question that, with the improvement in the carrying trade, an advance in freights and the transfer of crops from the centre to the seaboard, the opportunity will come for which so many have patiently awaited, ana unless the country is agitated by fears of inflation and a dis- turbance of the currency those who are on the long sido of the market will receive their reward. It is not reasonable to suppose that all of the railway companies which now make such a beggarly exhibit of figures and on thé stock list are quoted below twenty will remain in their present position without an effort to secure for them once more © THe CONFIDENCE OF THE PUBLIC. Such efforts are even now in embryo, and from vari- ous quarters we learn that stockholders are taking the aecessary steps to attain this end. A meeting of some of the stockholders of Wabash is to be held on Thurs- day, at which certain propositions may be presented having this object in view. The recommendations of ‘Sir Edward Watkin concerning Erie have not been for- gotten, Movements are also contemplated in connec- tion with Michigan Central, Hannibal and St. Joseph, Ohio and Mississippi and other low-priced securities ‘which, it is believed, will exert an improving influence, The managers of these great corporations cannot afford to waste their substance and make no endeavor to re- cover lost ground, Among other encouraging features of the situation we learn that the Atlantic and Pacific and St. Louis, Kansas City and Northern Railway have re- ‘established harmonious relations on a basis which the managers.of the two lines regard as equitable and per- manent, The ruinous competition recently inaugurated has given.place to remunerative rates of fares and freights, and the owners of the two lines congratulate themselves upon the well assured pros- pect ofa large and profitable business, The recent ad- vance of rates between Chicago and the East and the toning up of railway matters by increased earnings and reduced expenses all indicate a better state of things in rata securities in this section. THE RANGE OF PRICES TO-DAY ‘was as follows: Pacific Mail, stimulated by reports that the company had at last consummated its long- pending negotiations with Japan, and sold some of its wooden sidewheel steamers for between $700,000 and $800,000, advanced from 845% to 8634, at which price considerable realization took place, leaving the stock to close at 3624; 91,600 shares were sold.. The “point” ‘was freely distributed that to-morrow the price will touch 38, Next in interest and activity was Lako Shore, of which many encouraging things are said by its friends, The opening figure was sae the lowest 5254, the highest 53%, and the last 53%. Western Union was strong at 75% a 76%, and closed “at 7. Erie sold at 165 a 17, ending at the latter price. Northwest common sold at 39.39%. The pgeferred stock was steady at 54. St. Paul common ranged between 33% a 8434, closing at 843. The preferred stock vibrated be- tween 627% a 63%. Union Pacific sold at 70 a 69%, end- 4ng at 70. Ohio and Missiasippi at 15% 216}. Missourt Pacific opened at 4534 and fell off to 44, Atlantic and Pacific preferred sold at 1034 210. Wabash was steady at63z. Panama was quoted at 138, Michigan Central advanced from 535% to 55 and reacted to 64 In other stocks the changes are unimportant. THE MONEY MARKET. No change is to be recorded in this department, and wwe quote call loans on the basis of 134 and 2 per cent, mith prime discounts at 644 a7 per cent, according to date of maturity, That there is not more paper in the of brokers is due to the fact thata large part of business doing is for cash. «Currency shipments ve not yet assumed large proportions; on the 119% amount of curfency sent South and West largely de: oeids the rates which money is to command here later a the season; for these shipments, being almost rxclusively in I tender notes, have a direct bearing on the reserves of the banks, The foreign exchanges were dul and lower, the leading bankers paving re- Auced their rates to 4.80 and 4.84. Among the brokers \ue quoted rates for actual business were 4.79 for long end 4,83 for demand, One hundred dollars in currency Ao-day was worth only from $86 47 to $86 67. GoLp, The gold speculation was firmer on the decline in Gri sh consols at London and government bonds in Sermany, arising out of the advance in the rates of dis- Fount ly the Bank of Prussia, The price at the open- % Wis 116%, advanced to 117 and closed at 116%. @ rates paid for borrowing were 3-64, 1-82 and 1.04 yor diau, NEW YORK HERALD, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1875—QUADRUPLE SHEET. ‘The day’s business at the Gold Exchange Bank coy- CLEARING HOUSE STATEMENT. THE UNITED STATES TREASURY. A telegram from Washington says:— “The Secretary of the Treasury has ordered the re- tirement of $304,584 of the outstanding legul tenders, that amount being 80 per cent of the national bank cir- culation issued during the past month, Until further ordered the outstanding legal tenders will be reported at $373,941,000; national bank notes received for re- demption to-day, $776,000; custom’ receipts, $509,000; internal revenue receipts, $253,000,” We learn from the United States Assay Office that, of the £116,000 noted as having been shipped from Lon- don for the United States prior to to-day, not an ounce has been received at that office, and consequently they infer that the shipments have been in American gold coin instead of sovereigns. The following were the Treasury balances to-day :—Currency, $2,500,000; coin, $67,000,000, less coin certificates, $12,500,000, GOVERNMENT BONDS, Government bonds closed firm at the following quota- tions:—United States currency sixes, 124 a 12434; do. do., 1881, registered, 12114 a 1214; do. do., do., coupon, 123% a 124; do. five-twenties, 1862, registered, 118 a 1183; do. do., do, coupon, 118%; do. do., 1864, registered, 11834; do. do., do., coupon, 119% @ 1195; do, do., 1865, registered, 1193; do. do., coupon, 11934 a 119%; do. do., do, new, registered, 119% a 119%; do, do., do., coupon, 119% a 11954; do, do., 1867, registered, 120% a 120%; do. do., coupon, 120% a 12134; do, do., 1868, registered, 12114 @ 121%; do. do., do., coupon, 121% a 121%; do., ten-forties, registered, 116% a 117; do. do., coupon, 117K a 118; do., fives, 1881, registered, 118 a 11834; do, do., do., coupon, 11834 a 118%. The total exports of produce from the port since Jan. 1 this year amount to $185,442,681, against $217,992,504 for the corresponding period in 1874 and $215,168,223 in 1873, balagce, RAILROAD BONDS, Railroad bonds were active in the late dealings, the leading feature having been the Pacific issues, Centrals advancing to 106, Union firsts to 10334, Land Grants to 10134, and Sinking Funds to 90%. They have been steadily declining for several days, but the decline of the morning is to be attributed more particularly to the | rumors: of war being imminent between England and China, Consols have declined % per cent since yes- terday, the price for them now being 98%. The specu- | Iation in Erie shares seems tobe on the wane. They have declined 3 per cent since the close of business yesterday, the price for them now being 14%. Central PacMic sixes have advanced 34 per cent to-day, ,They are now quoted at 94 The shares of the Pennsylvai Railroad have declined 3 per cent, the last sale having been made at 4434. Foreign securities are dull, owing to the unsatisfactory phase which affairs in Eastern Europe have assumed. Advices from the Continent are to the effect that the markets generally are weak. In the market for American securities, both govern- ment and railroad, there has not been any variation of any consequence, although they are as a rule well supported. THK LATEST QUOTATIONS.
