I will give you an estimate of our company. This is based on the speed of nino ‘words per minute. It supposes that the cable will be 4n active operation for eighteen hours out of twenty- four during 300 days of each year. It shows the fol- Towing result on a minimum tariff of thirty cents per word, allowing four cents for land lines:— Capital of Direct Cable Company. -£1,800,000 Gross receipts 167,000 Working expen: 27,000 Net income...... eee 180,000 or about ten per cent on our capital It may be noted, however, that we are now carrying messages for twenty-tive cents per word, and can do so, while the Anglo-American will lose money. Now, as to the talk of consolidation, “buying out,” &c. Let me show you the articles of association (producing the paper). You will perceive here that we are organized under an act of Parliament, which expressly stipulates that we shall not consolidate with any company whatsoever. The only way you American’ financiers can get control of the direct cable is to buy up two-thirds of the shares id then liquidate the company. You must under- stand all cable companics are the children of cable manufacturers. For instance, the Anglo-American is the result of the Telegraph Construction and Mafnten- ance Company, as we are of the Messrs. Semens, the rival of the other cable manufacturing company. The Hsrato can appreciate the idle rumors of the late onopolists.’? VAILURE OP A CHICAGO BANK. A despatch was received on Saturday evening of the failure of the Fourth National Bank of Chicago. Mr. R. E. Goodell is President; but as there have been for some time rumors unfavorable to this institution it is said but little excitement was caused by the announce- ment of suspension. Considerable excitement was created yesterday morn- tng on the Produce Exchange, antong the hop and malt dealers and brewers, bygthe announcement of the fail- ‘ure of the well known old house of Jobn Taylor & Sons, ‘of Albany, brewers of Albany ale, On inquiry, how- ‘ever, it was ascertained that all such rumors were false. The cause of the report lay in the fact that the firm had asked for an extension of time for some of their notes coming due. This ifad been immediately granted to them, without any trouble, The agents of the firm in Greenwich street, in this city, yesterday informed the Heraup reporter that the firm had paid every note maturing, as fast as they came due, that their clerks would all be paid in the evening, as usual, that they hada note coming due on Monday, which would be immediately paid, and finally that there was nota word of truth in their reported failure or shaky condition.
