FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Feverish and Lower. GOLD 116 3-4 A 116 1-4 A 116 1-2. Government Bonds Firm—Foreign Exchange + Dall, but Firmer—Money on Cail 2 and 3 Per Cent, Wat Srrerr, } Wapxzypay, Sept, 22—6 P. HM. Every day’s expericnce in the stock market is one of Increasing distrust, Cheap as they seem to be, securt- ties are right and left offered for sale without other buyers than those who may havo been on the short side, or a few among the chronic bulls who are patient tnough to ‘wait the good time coming.” For such Mocks as New York Central, Delaware and Lacka- wanna, Kock Island, Fort Wayne and others, which have steadily pursued their way without default, the future ts all bright. The investors in them are solid men. But for the mero fancies, the non-dividend pay- Ang securities, the class of bubbles that havo been blown up only to collapse, the condition is purely specniative, and whatever strength or weakness they manifest is the work of manipulation. The truth is that men are unable to see the bottom of things, and the lessons of disaster are too fresh in mind to make even tempting bait attractive Months of steady de- cline, exposures of rottenness and revelations of fraud have bred suspicions that surround almost every stock which cannot show aclean bill of health and every com- pany which dare not publish to tho world a balance sheot from fear of bad results. When reports that be- Jong to the great community of stockholders are with- held to further the interests of directors and allow suc- cessful speculation onty to themselves and friends, it is but natural that the great outside public should take alarm and shun Wall street as they do a post house, ‘THE STOCK MAKKET was feverish, and, as will be scen below, the tendency was downward, notwithstanding the occasional slight ral- lies of the day. The transactions likewise show a falling off. The principal business was done in Lake Shore, of which some 65,000 shares changed hands between 644¢ and 533g, with the closing price 533 bid. Erie was next most active, and sold down from 17% to 16}¢—the extromes of the day. The proferred stock was quoted at 40 at the call, with subsequent sales at 8234. The comments of London papers on Sir Edward ‘Watkin’s report will be found hereafter. Pacific Mail ‘was heavy and receded from 36% to 3534, the closing price, Northwest common receded from 3976 to 39, ending at 39%; do, preferred, 6434 a S49 a 54%. The Pall Mail Gasette, this afternoon, says:—‘The supplies of money aro large and Paper continues scarce. Thore is no change in the rate of discount,” The prospect that noutrality will be maintained by the European nations toward Servia strengthens foroign securities, The market for Amer- ican government securities is steady. During the day only a limited amount of business has been transacted, Business has beon dull and the markets generally flat. Bales bave preponderated, owing to the fact that monoy 4s rather more stringent. The cause of this is the in- treused demand for specie from Germany and the feel- Ing which provails that there is every prospect of further restlessness in the market. Now Yorkecity six per cent gold bonds have declined 34 por cont and are quoted at 106. With these two exceptions prices gen- erally are unchanged. THR LATEST QUOTATIONS, Tuesday. Wedne: I. Commercial paper continues to be scrutinized with great care, but rates are unchanged, Ifaheavy foreign demand for our surplus products should set in, or if business in commercial centres was such as to en- courage shipments to the seaboard, greater financial health would result to all classes; but for the moment thore is no break in the monotony of stagnation. FOREIGN EXCHATGR is firmer, owing to the easier condition of the gold loan market, and the leading drawers advanced their rates to 4.803¢ for long and 4.8434 for domand sterling. There has been very little business done, and the rates for actual business are somewhat nominal at 4.7934 and 4.83, TUK GOLD MARKET. The currency of the country to-day, measured by the closing price of gold, was worth just 85 8-10 cents on the dollar, Is it not about time for our merchants, owners of real estate, lessors of buildings and others to gradually acquire the habit of making their contracts on a gold basis, and thus aid in familiarizing the public with what must, sooner or later, become once more our Standard measure of values? If the government is in earnest in its effort to resume specie payment in 1879 the change should take place without a shock; and if the traders of the country believe that such a resump- tion will occur it is not only their interest, but their duty, to avert that shock by educating thoso with whom they, may be brought in contact that the timo is coming when a greenback will be worth a dollar, and not, as now, fourteen or fifteen cents less than its face value. Gold closed at 116}, after selling at 11614 a 116%, the two extremes of the day. The rates paid for borrowing were 3-64, 1-2, 1-64, 2and 8 per cent and flat. [SSS WALL STREET NOTES. ERIE STILL DECLINING—THE LATEST ESTIMATE OF THE COTTON CROP. The stock market yesterday declined seriously, Erie was among the weakest of the railway securities, and touched 16% after having sold at 1734 the day before. Just now It is asserted in Wall street that Jay Gould has been defeated in bis plans to get a foothold in Western Union, and that Commodore Vanderbilt op- posed his combination. It is to be hoped there it some truth in this assertion, for nothing could be more antagonistic than the views and practices of the two men who have made a name in the street and have reached wealth by such different avenues, heavily on the rumor of considerable esterday sold heavily on the ru iupmente ‘of coin from England to this country, but when it was discovered that the amounts sent‘here would be comparatively small the premium stiffened up about 34 per cent, After business hours it was rumored a large business house was in trouble, but up to the hour of writing the truth of the rather vague report could not be contirmed. A life insurance company was also spoken of as likely to HAND IN LIQUIDATION PAPERS, yetas the same rumor prevailed last week but little credence was attached to this, ‘A ruinous compeution with the Ohio and Mississipp! line has been going on between Cincinnati and Louis- ville and the city of St. Louis and. intermediate points, ‘The competing lines are numerous, and the business, ag arule, very moderate, even at the lowest rates. A despaich from Louisville stated yesterday that the rail. road fight between the contending roads had onded, and thata consultation between superintendents, held at Nashville, had resulted in an amicable adjustment of difficulties, ANOTHER COTTON CROP ESTIMATE.
