At St. Luko’s Methodist Episcopal church, Forty-first street and Sixth avenue, there was given, last night, a representation of the manner in which | Messrs, Moody and Sankey, the eminent American evangelists, conducted their revival meetings in Great Britain and Ireland. The services were in charge ot Mr, George S. Weeks, who accompanied Messrs. Moody and Sankey in their extended tour of evangelization. This gentle- man possesses a fine flexible voice that is capable of much pathos, and he leads the congregation from a grand hallelujah ereseendo to the tearfully pathetic with | remarkable facility. The method pursued in these revivals is to work on the emotional feelings by suitable prayer and a few judicious and pertinent remarks before singing the hymns, The words of these beautiful songs ae wedded to the music, which becomes the lyric ex- ponent of the they wish to convey, and, therefore, by this shrewd preliminary method an interest is ex- cited in the sentiment, which becomes more forcible when conveyed through the soul-melting strains of sarod music. The Rey. Mr. Abbott, pastor of the church, presided, and, after prayer, introduced Mr. Weeks in a few appropriate remarks.’ That gentleman seated himself at a cabinet organ in front of the congre- gation, just at the steps of the altar, He commenced the services by singing the hymn “Revive us Again,” and instructed the congregation in his style of render- ing it, Which was quite different from that pursued at camp me ys und other public gatherings. He drilled the s in a proper pronunciation of the words, and aiso in jutoning according to the mean- ing of the words, At certain places only the female voices were allowed to sing, and the air died away in a famt echo, then the male Veices came in ina grand hozauna, There was a good deal that old-tashioned psalm singers might have considered operatic in this revival style, but it certainly had its effect on the con- gregation, which seemed to take a very lively Interest in the proceedings and sang with a heariy good will. Brother Andrews, a member of the congregation, being called upon to pray, asked God for a revival, and, as bis powerful voice grew more and more excited there were loud shouts of Amen!” and fervent clasping aud clapping of hands. The excitement got to be so mtense that much of what he said was quite incoherent; but as the object to be gained was apparently to promote a sort of physical emotion this was of but little con- sequence. Mr, Weeks thus sung ‘Almost Persuaded,”? and the pastor gave his experience of a young man who had procrastinated and died without “baying found Jesus.” This bad the desived effect, as the hymn was sung Mr. Weeks threw his plaintive voice into the affecting passages showed his power over the audience. ‘This was followed by a prayer that served as an introduction to the hymns, “I Need Thee Every Hour,” which was m tharked contrast to the vigotous notes ’of “Hold the Fort, for 1 Am Coming.” This system of making tie prayers and remarks leed up tothe hymns which seem | to follow each other like the heads of a sermon, is certainly not only novel but very effective.
