"FINANCIAL “AND COSMERCEAL, Whe Stock Market Irregular---Erie Lower---Excitement in London. Boney Tending Upward—A Better Demand for Currency from the Interior-—Govern- ment and Good Railway Bonds Wau Street, } TvuEspAY, Sept. 21—6 P. M. ‘The most active among the fancy securities to-day ‘was Lake Shore, of which sales of nearly 90,000 shares re recorded. The price at one time advanced to 55, ‘The stock is said to have boen principally sustained by }the shorts, who rushed in to cover, anticipating higher @gures; yet near the close such weakness was shown as ‘to induce the suspicion that new parties have entered ‘the fleld and are awaiting further profits on the down ‘side, Whon transactions are confined to a small con- etitaency, represented chiefly by brokers and local spec- julators, quick changes will naturally oceur, and these afford no indication of the real strength or backing of a tock. The misfortune of Wail street at the present wmoment is that it has little or no outside support, and ‘its vast interests are left to the ambitious manipu- ations of a few bold operators. The largest decline of ‘the day was shown in Erie, which, after opening at 1734 jand advancing to 17%, fell off to 167%, tho sales mounting to 38,000 shares, In this connection Sir Edward Watkin’s report, specially telegraphed from Bondon to the Evening Telegram, will be read with in- terest, i Its points are as follows:;— ERIE. Should it be possible under President Jewett’s man- gement to make the working expenses seventy per ‘cent of what they now are, un additional net profit of ‘$1,600,000 would result, We shail all watch anxiously the effect of the recent changes in the management iready hopefully commencing. Exceptional gauge involves exceptional working cost, In more prosperous times the national gauge must be sadopted. The mismanagement of years past cannot all at once be remedied or modified. It would bo as impossible as unwiso in the present State of the aifairs of rie to raise or to remit any more ‘English capital. I can recommend no policy but the policy of self- medemption. The railway must pay its debt as far as possible by the use of that ‘part of the net earnings which the courts wmay appropriate. If the diflicuity had been fairly looked in the tace €n 1872 much that has been lost could have been saved. As it is now, discipline and economy are once more ully re-established. The bond and stock holders should now submit to a period of self-denial, resting assured that their ‘interests are placed in firm, honest hands, undefiled by speculation. ‘The undertaking must againebe made self-supportin; The receivership is worked in cordial concert witl all of the honest interests of the company, and Mr. Jewett will give a strong hand and resist intrigues, The receivership, under the circumstances, is the {best alternative now possible, and I can only advise you to rely upon the honor and upon the anxious labor and ie experience of Receiver Jewett, le deserves support, and will do all that is pos- eats retrieve the fortune and honor of the under- iB. Whatever course may be decided on by English and Woreign holders wi!l be adopted in the United States in a | ‘hearty and full spirit of co-operation. ___ A public meeting is to be held when Mr. Morris ar- wives. - The English market in Erie exhibits considerable de- Pression, and at one time, according to cablegrams, the decline anounted from five to eight per cent on the bonds, with common stock selling as low as 1414. Later the Jatter rallied to 151g. The last despatch says that “The statement in Sir Edward Watkin’s report that the met revenue of the road is only twenty-one per cent of ‘the gross receipts, and the outstanding debts equal to fourteen months’ profit, causes much disappointment in Mnancial circles.” The close of THE STOCK MARKET ‘was irregular. fake Shore recovered from 537% to 54%, Northwest from 39% to 3934, Pacitic Mail from 355; to 96:4, Western Union from 76 to 76%4, ex dividend, and Quicksilver from 15 to 153g for the common and from 20 to 203 for the preferred.
